Link Lewis had discovered something odd.
His eyes had the ability to see through an object’s outer layer, revealing its true nature.
That was what happened then…
Standing in front of him was a Jennifer Rayleigh, the beautiful Director of Golden Sands Hospital. She stood tall at around 175cm. She had a beautiful face. With hair as black as it was silky smooth and curves that could have been moulded by Aphrodite herself. The unseen aura enveloping her was of regal stature, tinged with arrogance. Yet, that did not stop her from becoming the number one woman in the hearts of all men in Golden Sands Hospital.
In his eyes, the beautiful woman’s clothes were gone.
In actuality, it was gone from his vision. He could see through Jennifer’s exterior clothes and take in the sight of her bare skin; as fair and white as white jade. That and her 36Ds hollowed-out bra.
‘Hold up. The ice queen Jennifer Rayleigh would actually wear such sexy lingerie.’
Link eyebrows twitched and at the same time, he felt a painful pang coming from his eyes. After that, his vision turned cloudy.
His odd ability could only last as long as three seconds. After that, it needed time to cooldown.
As if she felt Link’s line of sight landing on her, as if the man had actually looked through her completely, she irritably knocked on her table, saying coldly, “Lewis, have you finished the medical report?”
“It’s r-ready,” Link replied as he was abruptly snapped back to reality. He rubbed his eyes a little and his vision returned normal.
He was sitting in a conference room, amongst tens of other medical officers. Each and every one of them had already submitted their own reports.
Link Lewis was just an apprentice. Even though he had hastily submitted his report to Jennifer, it was hard for him not to leave a bad impression on the others.
“Your medical report… Did you write this on your own?” said Jennifer after she had skimmed through it briefly and placed it down.
“Yes, I did. Though I only finished them late last night,” Link replied with confidence. He came from a family with a history of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was only natural for him to be familiar with medical reports.
“Please explain why your report is the same as Doctor Lindt’s?” Jennifer’s face suddenly turned cold and she shouted, “Tell me honestly, did you copy Doctor Lindt’s report?”
“Impossible, I wrote this report on my own! I spent the night in the office. Many on-duty nurses were there to see it!” Link shouted in protest whilst staring at James Lindt who sat opposite of him.
James Lindt was in the same department as Link Lewis. He arrived not a few months ago before he was assigned as a resident. There were rumours saying that he managed to land a position in the hospital with a few strings pulled.
“Director Rayleigh, one should not be so hasty to blame him. I too, finished my report last night and dumped them onto your organizer. Perhaps a gust of wind blew them out,” said James with an accusatory grin.
“Impossible, the Director’s organizer is always locked. How could it get blown out?”
Link suddenly realized something. Late last night, when he finished the report, he had dozed off on the table. When he woke up, he noticed his report had signs of being touched. And now, Doctor Lindt and his reports were identical. Saying it was a carbon copy would be a firm grasp of the obvious.
“Enough. I’ve looked through both of your medical reports. The contents were thorough and unique to a certain extent. It is something only an experienced doctor would write.”
At that point of her speech, Jennifer gave Link a look.
“I don’t believe an intern could write such a report.”
“Director Rayleigh! It was mine! I dare to swear!”
Link felt wronged. He had spent many hours on the report and yet he was now being blamed for plagiarism.
The two reports sat quietly on the table. A few other medical officers glanced at them and were amazed.
“This report included many aspects and perspectives. Reading this fills one with wisdom. This had to be written by an experienced doctor.”
“That is true. This sort of thinking must come from a senior that worked hard, not something an intern could cough up.”
“It’s clearly plagiarism. It’s nothing strange for someone like Doctor James Lindt to write such a detailed report for he did display exemplary knowledge in the medical field.”
Those comments were like hammers to the nail in his heart. He was stunned. Not one actually believed that he was the one that wrote it.
“Link Lewis. From this day forward, you are assigned to stand at the entrance to be a doorman! You are not allowed to see any patients unless you repent on your actions!” Jennifer pointed at the door screaming without holding back.
Link clenched his fist hard. He wanted to call James Lindt out for his wrongdoings but he had no proof for it. If he went against the director herself, those ambitious ones would use the opportunity to cause a ruckus. He might even lose his internship altogether.
He pushed his discontent down and disgruntledly said, “Fine. I’ll go right now!”
“Hoho. To think that such a person with a thick face still stays put. If it’s me, I would have already walked out of the hospital doors,” James Lindt snickered and said derisively.
The other medical officers could not help but join in on the fun.
“Is he just crazy?”
“How could he not? Look at him. Like a dog, no less.”
“...”
Link walked out of the conference room, barely keeping himself together. The comments he heard from behind sent his blood into a boiling rage.
Why did others refuse to believe that it was he who wrote such a detailed medical report? Was it just because he is an intern?
Unfortunately, Link Lewis was without any background. If he lost his internship at Golden Sands Hospital, he would lose his only means of putting food on the table. Worse, because of this event, it would be difficult for him to look for a job in the future. Life was hard; sometimes, not because he was without courage but because he was truly helpless.
At that moment, he recalled what his grandfather told him and he felt better.
Back in his dormitory, Link took a long and relaxing bath, then he retrieved an ancient thick book. Inscribed on the cover was his grandfather’s writing that said: A Doctor is someone who takes on the world with his chest held high. A Doctor is someone who endures it all, to cure it all.
Link Lewis started to learn the art of medicine from his grandfather from a tender age. After that, due to studying abroad, the ancient book that had looked over his family for generations was passed to him.
Link flipped the book open and all that was written on it were centuries-old inscriptions. Oddly enough, each of the words written were still clear and unfaded.
The book was incredibly cryptic. By the end of the day, Link did not even finish reading the first page. Even though there was much he could not yet understand, effort and repetition could remedy that.
He came to a quiet gazebo. With a faint light coming from a nearby source, Link studied the book thoroughly.
It was only a while after he read when a quiet little girl came before him. Link looked up and saw his girlfriend, Mary Macbeth.
“Mary? How did you find the time to come over?” Link said happily. He got up and wanted to give her a hug.
Mary, on the other hand, took a step back. Her face filled with disgust. He was baffled by the move and noticed she was wearing a golden bracelet.
“This gold bracelet was given to me by Young Master Zachary.”
She held her arms up, presenting the shiny gold bracelet.
Link found it to be an eyesore.
“Mary? Didn’t you hate Zachary?”
“We grew up together in the village. I was naive and now I’ve grown. Only now do I realize the importance of materialic value. Do you know how much this bracelet costs? You might not even be able to buy this for the rest of your life!”
“What do you mean by that, Mary? If it’s such an accessory, I could buy them after working hard,” said Link, gritting his teeth.
“Stop making a fool of yourself. You tried to work for money and yet, you have none. You tried to be somebody and yet you are nobody. No matter how hard you try, you will only be a doctor. You can never understand the life of someone who has wealth.”
Her cold words froze Link into a standstill.
“Mary, give me a chance. I will prove myself!” Link howled aloud.
“Prove? How would you do that? By standing at the entrance of a hospital as a doorman? Do you not understand what I am trying to say here?”
A cold smile arched from her lips.
“Let’s call it off. We can never be together, Link.”
“That is all,” said Mary as she turned around and continued, “Young Master Zachary is waiting for me outside. I’ll see you again. Oh, wait. I won’t.”
After she was done talking, Mary walked straight to the front gates and got into a red Ferrari.
A young man was in the driver’s seat and he looked impatiently annoyed.
“Mary, what took you so long? What's there to say to a bastard who doesn’t even know who his parents are?”
“Let’s go. I’ve ended things with that bastard. Relax. A bastard like him can never be anything but a bastard.”
Link’s heart felt the blow. He stood there, unmoving, as he looked at his now ex-girlfriend flirting in another man's embrace. As the car drove off, Link’s mind was filled with echoes of the car’s engine roar, and the darkness of a void.
He lived in the farming suburbs. He was orphaned after his parents abandoned him. He did not even know their names.
Fortunately, he was raised by his grandfather. As the years went by, he took odd jobs as he studied and could manage to send some money back for his grandfather.
Mary Macbeth was his childhood sweetheart from the same suburb. He had shared many things about himself to her. Alas, when they came to Golden Sands city, everything changed. Even trivial things such as materialistic wealth became the prime bane of their relationship.
“Why… What on earth…” Link yelled into the sky before he threw his fist downward. Coincidentally, his fist landed on the corner of the ancient book.
He scraped his knuckle and it started to bleed. Blood oozed out from his knuckles and flowed into the book. After that, something bizarre happened.
As if the book suddenly “woke” up, as if it was finally starting to breathe, it proactively drew blood from his fist without stopping.
Link was surprised. He quickly noticed the book was actually trying to suck all of his blood.
Unfortunately, the book had already taken so much blood that Link was growing light-headed. He was losing his consciousness and even though he tried to scream, his voice would not come out. He could only stare as the book drew more blood and increasingly became redder and redder.
At the last moment, he blacked out and fainted.
All of the sudden, a voice cried out in his mind, chanting, “The bloodline of Lewis. The inheritor. The All-Seeing Eyes. The One Savior.”
