Chapter 1 You Have To Pay The Price Of What You Did

The emergency room door opened after a short while, and a doctor wearing a medical mask clad in a white coat walked out.

Sterling's eyes lit up when the doctor walked out. He got up and wanted to ask him about Sophia's condition, but before he could get up, he was pressed back into his seat by Victor.

"In the condition that you’re in, Mr. White, I suggest that you stay put." Victor had a great dislike for disobedient patients, thus he did not sound very pleasant at all.

Having said that, he did not wait for Sterling to go berserk and walked up to the doctor to ask, "How’s Ms. White doing, Dr. Conor?"

"She’s alive." Doctor Conor took off his mask, revealing his sullen face.

At the sight of his expression, Sterling could not help it anymore and stood up straight away. As he was exerting some strength on his injured leg, his face turned pale from the pain. However, he was not in the mood to attend to it. "What do you mean? Is Soph’s condition critical?"

The doctor’s face was so sullen that he could not help but think of the worst-case scenario.

"Humph!" Dr. Conor harrumphed heavily at him, ignored him, and gave a cursory glance around. He asked impatiently, "Is Mr. Charles here?"

Sterling was on pins and needles as he still had no clue how Sophia was doing. "No! He's not here! Tell me, doc, what exactly happened to my sister?"

"She’s your sister?" Dr. Conor looked askance at him.

Sterling wiped away the cold sweat caused by the pain and nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes, yes! Is she not doing well?"

Before the doctor could answer, he added eagerly. "Please save her. I don’t care how much it costs. I have a lot of money!"

"It's not a matter of money but the lack of virtue." Dr. Conor snapped. "Everyone except for Mr. Harris can go in if they want."

As soon as the words left his lips, he walked away with a sullen look on his face.

Several nurses filed out of the emergency room after him, all of their faces sullen.

"Lack of virtue? What the heck?" Sterling grumbled with a frown and walked impatiently into the emergency room. Nicole quickly stepped forward to support him as she was afraid that he would fall.

Victor darted a confused glance in the direction where Dr. Conor was leaving, then walked up to Sterling who was hopping forward step by step. He said, "I'll do it."

"Sorry for troubling you, Dr. Hemingway." Nicole was sweating profusely from exhaustion. After saying those words, she threw Sterling into Victor's arms and trotted into the emergency room herself.

Lying in Victor's arms, Sterling, "..."

Using only one hand, he pushed against Victor’s chest for support in an attempt to pull the distance between them. It was absolutely ridiculous to see two men hugging each other in public.

However, when he was about ten centimeters apart from Victor, a hand suddenly passed through his armpit while another hand passed through his knee pit.

Before Sterling could wrap his head around what was going on, he was suddenly suspended mid-air.

Victor had picked him up by the waist!

Princess style!!!

Sterling felt awful at once. "You, you, you..."

"You don’t have to be so moved, Mr. White." An adult man could weigh quite a lot. Victor grimaced and cushioned him upward a few times before carrying him into the emergency room.

In the emergency room, Sophia was sitting on the transfer bed. Apart from looking slightly pale, she seemed to be in pretty good shape. Nicole was standing next to her.

Under the conflicting gazes of the two women, Victor set Sterling down on the bed and curved up his lips, revealing two dimples. "Mr. Sterling’s leg is injured. He shouldn’t be walking."

Sophia, "..."

Was that why you carried an adult man inside like that?

"Are you feeling better now, Soph?" Sterling had no time to argue with Victor and looked at Sophia with a concerned look on his face. He was speaking much faster than usual.

"I'm okay." Sophia glanced at Victor and said after a pause, "I didn’t have a recurrence of pulmonary edema. I was just pretending."

She did not want to see Charles, at least not now. However, she could not drive him out, so she could only come up with a terrible idea like that.

"The hospital has always been tight on emergency treatment resources. I’m not surprised to see Dr. Conor getting so mad after you tricked him like that, Ms. White." Victor frowned. There was a flash of displeasure in his eyes.

"This is my fault." Sophia said, "I will apologize to Dr. Conor some other time."

Victor raised his eyebrows slightly. "That’s not necessary. Doctors need to treat many patients in a day. We won't waste time staying mad at a patient. His anger will dissipate after a while.

"In other words, even if Dr. Conor still remembers this incident, your apology will only be a futile attempt. For every doctor out there, a patient pretending to have a sudden illness and occupying medical resources is, in its very nature, a vile thing to do."

Sterling did not care about these things at all. Sophia was the only one he cared about. "This is no big deal. You don't need to take it to heart. I will buy some expensive gifts and pay the doctor a visit later. That should be enough to be considered as an apology!"

His words turned Victor’s expression surly. He had long heard that Mr. White was a fearless second-generation spoiled kid who cared for nothing. Sure enough, he realized that he was far worse than that after meeting him in person!

"No. I'll do it myself." Sophia said, "Whether Dr. Conor has taken offense or not, whether he accepts my apology or not, I am at fault, so I should apologize."

If this was in the past, then she might be on the same page as her brother, thinking that giving expensive gifts as compensation was enough to qualify for an apology. However, perhaps she had experienced too many things over the last two years, so the way she viewed certain things changed.

Victor’s countenance eased slightly.

"Okay. We’ll do everything as you say! Everything is negotiable as long as you’re okay!" Heartache and pampering filled Sterling’s eyes. "Soph, you have to tell me in advance when you do this in the future. Otherwise, my heart won’t be able to take it!"

Nicole interjected. "Your brother thought you were sent into the emergency room because Mr. Harris made you mad. He even fought him with a knife!"

Having said that, she glared at Sterling fiercely, looking as though she was settling scores with him at an opportune moment.

"A knife?" Blood instantly drained from Sophia’s face. She turned to look at Sterling, her voice slightly louder now. "What happened, Sterling?"

Sterling avoided eye contact. "Hahaha… It’s no big deal, really!"

"Nicole?" Sophia turned to Nicole, cold sweat seeping out from her forehead.

She was not afraid that Charles would take it out on her. However, she was afraid that her brother would be punished for provoking Charles!

At an angle where Sophia could not see, Sterling motioned at Nicole vigorously, begging his wife to show him some mercy.

"Nothing. He was just trying to scare Mr. Harris off with a knife." Nicole said, "If he actually did something to him, then your brother and I won’t be standing here right now."

Sophia thought that her words made sense. Charles was someone who would seek revenge for the smallest vengeance. He simply suspected that she was cheating on him and went so far as to torture and humiliate her. If Sterling did something unforgivable, he would never let him off so easily.

Seeing that he had escaped this entire ordeal, Sterling quickly mouthed his thanks to Nicole. However, Nicole was so angry that she refused to even look at him.
