1. Welcome to DCA

What's your definition of a typical secondary school? Excessive drama, good grades or combination of both?

Well, at D'Champions academy, they had both. You could call the school a basic definition of a high school because they had it all. Good grades, extra curriculars, annoying teachers, pestering juniors and most importantly, loootttt of drama.

In SS3A, they had quite a combination of normal, slightly normal, unnormal and very unnormal (forgive the spelling). The class was filled with different people with different characters and like most secondary schools also, their social hierarchy was very cliche.

They had the smart kids, Jocks, Jokers/Clowns, amebos (A.K.A ministers of informations), serious kids, cool kids, nerds aren't smart (yup you heard right), bullies, beauty queens, meanies, the elites, weirdos, all rounders (those that fit into two or more groups) and finally the neutral/average kids to which Anita and her two friends proudly belonged. They were the good ones, the ones that minded their businesses and never got into trouble both within and outside the class.

They being Anita Adewole and her two best friends Dami (short for Damilola) and Amina.

Anita Adewole was a mixture of neutral and amebo. Sure she may be a little reserved and all that, but who doesn't love a good gist?? She was the gist supplier amongst her three friends.

Amina was quite shy even shyer than Anita and Dami? Dami was bougie. She acted like the rest of the world didn't matter, not in a bad way though. She wasn't selfish or narcissistic. It's just that for Dami, it doesn't matter if the Kim Kardashians are the richest celebrities or if Taylor swift is now dating Justin Bieber. All Dami knew was her and the people around. Any other external information that isn't revelant to her in any way was shunned.

"Class compliment" Naomi, the class prefect called out for us to greet the teacher that was standing in front of our class. He was a tall, dark man in his mid 40s or 50s. His name was Mr Winifred and he was a stern, hard man. One of those teachers that was always seen with a cane in his hands. He had also taught them in their ss1? (Senior secondary school 1).

If you're wondering why I used two S instead of three, it's because here in Nigeria, it is pronounced "SS" but the actual abbreviation is "SSS" which stands for senior secondary school.

"Good morning" he stated.

"Good morning sir" they all replied simultaneously but he didn't seem to care because he started talking immediately he said his greetings cutting them halfway...

"Welcome to another beautiful session"

Beautiful kee??, what is beautiful about coming to school Anita thought to herself

"I'm not going to waste your time by talking too much because I'm sure you already know what I want to say...." She rolled her eyes but luckily, she sat at the back so he didn't notice "....as you all know obviously, this is your last year in this institution..." there was a brief cheer from the members of the class acknowledging that remark...

They were going to be leaving soon yay!!!

The noise went on for a while before he finally cut them off by waving his came in the air (you don't want to get a taste of that, trust me)

".....now I know this is the year that most of you will start becoming rebellious and following bad gangs and I'm not going to reflect on that because that's why we have guidance and counseling...." If there was one thing Anita liked about the man, it's that he was straight to the point.

"....but all I have to say is be good children, focus on your studies and don't do anything stupid that will disgrace your parents and family." He finished off.

"Who is the class prefect? Has anyone be elected?" He asked.

Naomi raised her hand. She was the class prefect since SS1 and nobody seemed to bother taking the mantle of leadership away from her.

"Weren't you the class prefect last year?" He asked

"Yes. I was" she answered

"Ehen....shey no one wants to relieve you of that position" he asked in slight pidgin.

"I don't know sir"  Naomi replied. "Maybe we can elect someone" she added. Anita was pretty sure Naomi knew what she was doing when she suggested that we elect because she knew that no-one was willing to take away her position...like who class prefect epp?

(Who does class prefectship matter to?)

"Ok then..." He stated. "If you're willing to run for the seat of the class prefect please indicate by standing up"

Run, seat...see how he's talking as if it's one serious world leadership position. Anita whispered to Amina who chuckled

And as expected no one stood up.

"So no one wants to become the class prefect?" He asked again.

Again, no one stood up, scratch that no one even moved except Naomi who was still standing looking around for who was willing to run against her. Anita looked at the slim dark girl, she wondered if she wasn't tired of that position or if the school was secretly paying her because she sure seemed to love her job.

After an awkward silence their form teacher (Mr Winifred) finally gave up and sighed. "Ok then...Naomi you're prefect" and she nodded and turned to face the class briefly before siting down but no one missed the small smile that was etched on her face.

It's not like being the class prefect was a horrible thing o, it's just that many people wanted or rather preferred being a school prefect instead even though only few people from the class campaigned for some reputable posts but the number of aspirants from the first arm didn't reach half of those that went for office in the other arm SS3B. It was as if their entire class went for post and being a class of about thirty something people, that was saying a lot.

Hours later the classroom was filled with noise. They didn't have any class that day as no teacher came to teach so Anita was resting her head on the desk trying to sleep when she heard a loud thud. It irritated her so much as she straightened up and angrily looked around, no one seemed to have noticed the thud or maybe they just weren't paying attention so she put her head on her desk again just as the noise came again even louder than before.

"Who is making that rubbish noise na" she half yelled looking around only to meet the face of her royal Highness one hand on her hip as she stood in the middle of the class with a metal rod in her other hand what Anita assumed is what she use to make that loud noise.

You know that girl that thinks she's better than everyone just because she's pretty or smart or comes from a very affluent background? Grace was that girl! She was rude, stuck up and entitled bitch who thought she could rule everyone just because her father was rich. She once called everyone paupers in SS1 when they refused to vote her for class prefect and chose Naomi instead. In her exact words

"Mtchew...you people did not vote for me abi, yeye people. What am I even doing in this nonsense school? I supposed to be in top notch schools like Charles Dale and Loyola Jesuit, somewhere worth my class yet I'm here mingling with you paupers and you have the guts to choose her over me" she had said while pointing to Naomi.

It was a very funny incident. The fact that she called them paupers actually amused some of her classmates especially Anita. D'Champions was not half as expensive as the school's she claimed she was meant to be in but most of them including Anita came from well to do backgrounds so who was she to degrade them just because her father was a senator

Yes a senator! He contributed to the school generously and that was why it didn't surprise any of her classmates when Grace was let off the hook without a single punishment

After that day however, she never came out for any post that involved the class members voting.

Anita loathed the girl. It was quite unfortunate her parents gave her that name when her behaviour reflected nothing close to it. She ruled the evil empire with the rest of her crew which consisted of Rachel and Aliya two light skinned girls that followed her like puppets, Joyce, an archaic girl who was the pure definition of a wannabee who wanted to part of the trio by all means. Rumours even had it that she once stole her parent's money in SS2 just to buy the trendy "stone bag" because Grace and her gang were using it at that time and Josh her darling boyfriend who was equally as snobby

The two deserved each other!

In Anita's opinion, she acted more like a Grave than Grace.

"Mtchewww..." She sighed slowly eyeing her before turning around seeking everyone's attention.

"Come Grace wetin dey do you sef? Which kind yeye noise be this sef" Chukwudi one of her classmates said glaring at her. She gave him an equal once over from head to toe before clearing her throat

"Ehem...as I was saying..." She started

As if she was saying anything Anita thought but didn't voice out my opinion

"Shey everyone is aware that Tomorrow is when they'll announce the prefect list.." she started looking around proudly like the peacock she is

"Ehen.." some classmates said waiting for her to land the point

"Well....we all know I'm campaigning for social prefect" she drawled out slowly taking her time

"Ehemmmm" "and so?" "Come this girl talk fast" some impatient classmates said, the class was somewhat quiet and everyone was waiting for what she had to say..

"Well..." She started slowly again drawing imaginary circles on the desk in front of her with the metal rod

"Talk fast na" was what a girl said as people started murmuring. She eyed the girl as if she was a piece of  trash before rolling her eyes and saying

"Anyways I just want to say that when I get the post tomorrow, you people should cheer for me o, show your support" she finished off before catwalking to her seat in front of the class. Murmurs and sighs filled the air as everyone sighed in annoyance that she just wasted their time for nothing. Anita smiled to myself

That's what she gets for being such a bitch!

"Imagine sef, she even said 'when' as if she's so sure she will get the post" Anita murmured to Amina who sat beside her. Dami her other friend didn't come to school on the first day, not that it was big deal. Students usually missed the first day of school and not everyone had resumed in their class. The only people who had come that day were some boarders, those seeking favour from the school (the wannabee prefects) and children with strict parents such as hers (Anita).

"Aswr...overconfidence will kill her" Amina replied but her unsure voice showed that she thought otherwise.  Of course everyone knew Grace would get the post. Her parents were wealthy and they made generous donations to the school on occasions. They even heard that the Principal was her uncle.

The two continued talking when two people started exchanging words. It was Rachel, one of Grace's accomplice and another girl from SS3B. Anita rolled her eyes again, something she did too much and went back to Amina.

trust SS3 students to cause drama on the first day of school

The rest of the day went by quickly much to Anita's joy. The first day of school wasn't always the best, they just spent the day copying time tables, filling out form slips and all that and she was more than happy to go home...
