They tried everything, from making cookies, selling lemonade and even doing some house chores to raise money for the performance. Finally, they were going to sell tickets, at a low cost to the parents so many people could show up. They even found a local art store that told them if they raised the money (even if they were close) that they would match 10 per cent of the total proceeds, as a donation.
Classes were going by as normal, Susan was a bright student, who got excellent grades, even though from time to time would sit drawing in
her sketchbook. Yet, her grades never suffered because of it. During her first year, many of the teachers didn’t allow her to, but eventually, MS Laura was able to prove that even though she was coloring she was still paying attention and it even helped her think. During gym, it was the only time of the day where she could spend time with her best friend Zoey.
They were both wearing gym uniforms, which was shorts and a shirt with running shoes and a hair tie. After getting ready the girls were all about to get some soccer practice in, Susan was a striker or offensive forward, who sometimes played in midfield. While Zoe was a defender or sometimes the goalie. They worked so well together that they were often put on a team, or on opposite teams to see how they played against one another, but that never seemed to bother either of them. They both enjoyed playing either way. From time to time Zoey had to sit out or ask for a substitution for her to use her asthma inhaler and would come back in during the next break. Some days were worse than others, some days she was out all class and others she was running like a champ. After a long class of drills running and stretching it was time to get dressed again and go lunch.
Zoey was sitting next to Susan, she was feeling nervous, but she had to tell her, they have been friends for a while now, and had plenty of time to get to know one another. “I haven’t told you yet but I’m going away soon, we will get to play for the year but then I’ll be attending a course for the arts” explained Susan, waiting for disappointment. However, she was surprised by Zoey’s answer. “I think it’s really cool that you're going to this art academy, what is it do you know? My mom tells me that it's in Italy.”
“Well not quite but yeah, I’ll be far away, I do really want to go I am really going to miss talking to you, I’m not going to
have any friends there. I have gotten used to losing brothers and sister but not friends, and I know you longer than some of my siblings. I'll write to you every day," she says with a huge smile on her face. "and that a promise” said Susan reassuringly.
Before lunch was over and they had to go to their separate classes, Zoey always got picked up at the end of the day. Sometimes she made it in time to say goodbye as Susan picked up her little sister, and sometimes she couldn’t make it. Today she was right on time, outside the kindergarten class waiting for Karly to line up. “Oh, are you picking up Karly today?” MS Hanson asked “Of course I will. You know I’ll let you walk Karly to kindergarten if you want and I’ll explain the whole thing to Susan." Karly was glad to see her other big sister Zoey, she dropped her off kindergarten and ran to Susan. She had to go, so she hugged Karly goodbye, and asked her to say I love you to Susan for her.
Susan was talking to a teacher when she realized what time it was. She thought I need to pick up my sister, "please, can you walk with me, I can’t believe I forgot, she needs someone to walk with her, MS Mariah, if ok, let's walk together, there is still more we need to talk about."
The two of them eventually got there to find her sister safe at aftercare, dance was cancelled today. Once everything had been straightened out MS Mariah had signed Susan in for aftercare and she had to go “Alright I’ll see you after class tomorrow, regular dance practices as always” she gave her a hug and was on her way to get something for the play.
Karly was playing with another young girl about her age, she walked up behind her and tickled her sides. “I’m sorry I was late, I lost track of time and I had some important dance things to talk about with MS Mariah, do you forgive me, Karly?” “Zoey said that I love you” Susan smiled, “Oh Zoey was here, but she had to go home”, “I wonder what’s up? did she drop you off or did the teacher?” Karly answered and started to play again. How strange I wonder what she wanted to talk to me about?
The next day after school practice was just starting, Susan had already dropped her little sister and she didn’t see Zoey all day. Having her dance uniform under her normal clothes, she had dance practice this at lunch, she would simply take off her shirt and shorts and was ready to get started. She wore her black leotard tights and she had her slippers in her book bag. They started to practice scenes from the play. Starting a tango like a dance with some added moves, the teacher reminded them this was only for practice and may not make it in the play.
Another day had come and gone, more practice with the tango and they started to practice the dinner scene, which included many parts, the break the scene into the part, having different people come in at the different time, and later they will try to bring it all together. They ended the days' practice with a rehearsal of the wedding scenes, the next week they will be announcing who will be playing the other parts. Once again, her friend was not at school and she hadn’t heard from her mother, so she wrote to her friend a letter, she knew her address, maybe she could get an answer that way.
Dear Zoey, I hope all is well, thank you for dropping off my little sister, I know there was something you wanted to talk to me about please tell me. please write back to me, love always your best friend... Love Susan.
She then drew a heart around her name and wrote down Zoey and next to it the initials B.F.F. She put the letter in an envelope that was properly addressed, she asked Kevin to drive by her home, she dropped the letter off in the mailbox and then they were on their way home. She thanked Kevin for the favor, said her goodbyes and soon she was finished with dinner and went to sleep soundly.
The day after Susan and Zoey went to the beach, it was a beautiful day and they found an abandoned ball on the beach. "let’s go play, we still need to work on that drill that coach taught us today." They were both playing soccer, which oddly enough was not hard even though they had four legs. The girls where centaurs, a halve horse have human creature. They played soccer for a while practicing attacking and defending, Zoey looked good, like she has been practicing. They were not keeping score, just playing for fun. I mean it was a dream, right? It was strange that Zoey suddenly needed her inhaler, she took a moment, used her medicine and seemed fine again. Susan’s dreams were so real, she did not really understand them. Karly was not in the dream, she was trying to make her appearance, but nothing happened, I suppose I will just have to be happy with Zoey, it was great playing with her best friend, she felt as if she could almost hug her.
The dream started to get a little scary as a storm overhead started to break, it was a thunderstorm, next thing she knew Zoey needed her inhaler again and this time she was out of medicine. It was getting scarier, she knew her friend desperately needed air, she was trying to wake up, but she was too fixated on what she was seeing, my friend needs to breathe, wake up, come one wake up. It seems there was nothing she could do her friend was dying before her very eyes and there was nothing she could do but watch in horror. She knew what she had to do was to get Zoey to take slow calming breaths, she realized
she needed to calm down too. She was trying but this was terrifying also heart-breaking, and unlike last time dream or no dream, there was no one around to help her. She tried anything she could do to help. Finally, a shining light slowly crept through the daunting black storm clouds. The sun was shining through now, the clouds retreated in cowardice at its brightness, but Zoey was gone. Susan was even more lost and confused, where did she go, is she ok, the light was in her eyes, it was getting brighter and the next thing she knew she was being hugged by Karly. I’m glad this nightmare is over... I’m ready for a normal sleep now, she went over back to the same beach in her horse body and laid down and fell asleep.
“Karly, you were having a nightmare I think, you kept on saying Zoey, wake up, wake up... you sounded like you were scared, and your sweating” Susan dried herself off with a towel and hugged her sister back, “Thanks for waking me up that dream was terrifying I thought my friend was dying” Susan and Karly got ready like every day and they went off to school. Susan couldn’t help but feel scared for Zoey, but then she remembered it was just a dream. Soon she forgot all about the dream as she was too busy in school worrying about math and the play. Another day had come and gone and again no Zoey, and remembered her dream, or was it more like a nightmare, it started out nice and then got so... She didn’t want to think about it, she only hoped her friend was ok, she knew she had this breathing problem. Zoey had told her that she sometimes needed to miss school because of it, she lost a whole month before, at her old school. Susan was trying her best to understand, well as much as she could anyway. Susan had a lot to think about, organizing the play, working on money that was needed, along with her own work. She knew she was worried
about her friend but she couldn’t let herself be overwhelmed by it, she convinced herself that her friend was going to be ok and a doctor would surely help her if she needed it. Tonight, dinner was roast chicken with lemon juice mild black pepper along with green beans and water for everyone. Dinner was served slightly late tonight, so no juice was allowed. After dinner, Susan helped Karly get dressed and washed up like always and it was time for bed. Susan gladly read to Karly watching her go to sleep. Lilly opened the door to find her reading, smiled, and whispered to make sure she was in bed soon and to have a goodnight. Riley was mainly cool with helping kids, washing their clothes amongst other things. Lilly was more responsible for taking care of the kids, she took it upon herself to do extra work, she didn’t mind, and she wanted to do it.
