View MoreRichard was left in the kitchen all alone. He stood for some time and surveyed the untidy kicthen, he became so confused because he did not know where to start the cleaning. The pots we're as black as charcoal; the used plates littered every corner of the kitchen; and there were wrappers of bread, moimoi, peels of yam, peels of potatoes, and plaintain all over the kitchen. The kitchen looked as if it had not been swept for one month.Richard could not understand why people would be so care free about their sanitation. It was the same kicthen they had been making use of day in day out, and yet they were not bothered about it's cleanliness. Considering the fact that the woman had two teenage daughters at home, he still could not understand why the woman did not maintain a neat kicthen. What if he was not employed at that point in time? So, that was how the whole place would have been; untidy. He kept wondering.Apart from thinking of the steps to take in cleaning t
Whenever he walked, his knee-cap would give a sharp pain, making him to feel uncomfortable. It was very obvious that he had returned to square one, now that he did not know a single person that could give him a helping hand. He had thought that he was going to keep his body and soul together with the job he secured as a washerman. Since things did not out the way he had planned it, then there was a need for him to start all over again. But how? he wondered. It started to rain very heavily, such that he had to take a shelter at a nearby shop for the rain to abate, he concluded in his mind that he would have to pass the night under a bridge. With the hunger that was raging in his stomach, begging was definitely the only way out.He began to look into the faces of the people around the shop, those he felt sure that when he begged would not refuse to give him something; at least the little that would take care of his feeding for that evening, instead of having
Richard stood for some time with his heart in his boots, hoping that the man would come out again so that he could apologize. He could not understand why the man refused to come out. It was rather too strange in his imagination. He did not know whether the man had forgiven him or not. Something in him told him to press the door bell once more so as to remind the man of his presence at the doorstep, but he had to restain himself because he did not know what the man wanted to do next.By the time he waited for over forty-five minutes, he did not need any jupiter to tell him that something was wrong, and before he realized what was happening there was a loud knock at the gate. The gateman instantly threw the gate open and three well-armed policemen trooped in."Where is oga? Where is oga? Tell him we are here," one of the policeman commanded."Okay make I go call am come for you," the gateman responded.By then Richard had moved away from the door step and w
They both woke up very early the following day. While the gateman was busy washing the man's car, Richard on his own part was piling up all the clothes he was to was that morning. When the man was ready to leave for work, he called him and gave him one hundred naira for detergent he was to use in washing the clothes. He took it and hurried to the next street and within two minutes he came back with the detergent, ready to start the washing."My God! This is magnificent, how can only one man be living in this kind of a big house all alone." he wondered aloud as he admired the architectural beauty of the building. He did not know that the gateman was standing behind him and overheard him."You dey surprise?" the gateman said, giggling. "Na only him dey live here; him wife plus all hin children dey abroad. Na sometime sha dem dey visit am for here, or sometime him go-go there go visit dem.""I see!" Richard said, as he bent down to pick the packet of detergent whic
