  • For the pain   Chapter 9

It started to rain as Kim drove back home. She stopped at the gate and decided not to honk her car horn, wanting to avoid alerting Thomas of her return.Alfred was her saving grace, appearing just in time to open the gates. She only realized that she had left her phone at Franklin’s when she drove in.Usually she would have accepted Alfred’s offer for an umbrella, but she was going to get wet in the shower anyway and the rain was already sleeping through her clothes.“No point in running.” Kim told the concerned servant. Maybe Franklin was right. She was scared and should have just stayed at his place.Kim flickered the rain from his face and picked up her pace. If Thomas thought she couldn’t stand up for herself, she would soon prove him wrong.“I love the old me.” Kim spoke to the rain. “Damn the rain, and damn Thomas."

  • For the pain   Chapter 8

Kim walked towards him, taking careful steps. "Okay..okay, could we at least have dinner somewhere special or something?""No." Thomas said in a voice almost as low as hers. He turned to look at her, snaked one arm around her waist and pulled her closer to him. "The dishes out there are slimy. Darling, just take care of yourself, watch a movie, I'll see you later." He leaned forward and planted a kiss on her forehead.Kim turned her head away, feeling irritated."Too raucous." Thomas would say no to everytime she asked to accompany him to the annual fun fair and then she would be left to wander from stall to stall, sampling African cuisine and buying things to support local artists.Kim remembered her mother. She would always go with her mum and since she had so much fun, she had decided to keep it a tradition. Her mum had been friends with the local vendors, greeting with added enth

Kim watched sternly from where she stood outside. Alfred emerged from the hedge of flowers, his eyes were half open but his unshaken attitude remained.Alfred took bold steps forward, with the confidence of a model on a pagent. He ignored the anger triggering words that threatened his loyalty. He stopped under the canopy of an overgrown hydrangea plant, muttering words she couldn't comprehend, to himself. When Thomas was done with ranting, he strode out and bored the expected soberness. "Why would you leave her out there? The fact that you lived with her doesn't mean you play dungeon. She's my wife! How dare you, like what the hell, what-the-bloody-hell Alfred?" Thomas snapped, flailing his hands in the air, intentionally spilling some of the liquid on him.

  • For the pain   Chapter 6

"Goodness me!" She gasped, suddenly remembering today was her anniversary. Kim had never been good with remembering dates, but she wouldn't consider it a "strange" that Thomas had also forgotten their first wedding anniversary. One year of marriage, she contemplated, and it wasn't with a man with the same drive as James, neither was it any of her African friends. It was with Thomas. Thomas Richard Banks.Three years ago, when her mother had died, there was nobody who could console her. Thomas, on his many visits, tried his best to cheer her up and his presence did spark a smile on her face but it didn't fill the hole bore in her.He became a father to her - a man far wiser, more gentle and way self-possessed than most men his age, and above all, he listened.

  • For the pain   Chapter 5

Months later, Kim had been fully persuaded and had left New york for London. It wasn't really so much work since she gave her full consent after she had caught James in the act. She had gone on impulse and stayed alone in the family house under her uncle's guide. He was a professor in a college in London. She left with the thought that it would be an e

  • For the pain   Chapter 4

Late the next morning, Kim woke up to loud and severe pounding against her bedroom door. The knocks had started on a cool note but when the sleepy head refused to comply, whoever it was opted for the former."Miss Kim!" Alfred roared for the sixth time with every ounce of strength he had, forsaking his cool nature."Yes...yes I'm up!" She yelled back, flinging the duvet in the air and then cowered back to bed after opening the door to let him in, acknowledging her throbbing headache."Ugh, finally." He sighed. "Are you okay ma'am?" Alfred asked but got no reply. Kim had gone back to sleep."Ma'am you've got to wake up, your father called, he asked for you to come meet them at the train station.
