  • Her   Chapter 49

Saying goodbye to a friend is never easy, even if that friend is made of metal and plastic instead of flesh and blood. For the last time, I slip my motorcycle into manual controls and hit the open road. The smell of asphalt, warm in the sun, burns my nostrils as I merge onto the highway. For once, my mind is blank, one with the sky and the wind and the road crunching beneath my tires. The buyer lives in Shoreline, a quiet suburb north of Seattle, and the ride is over before I'm ready. I pull off the highway into a small neighborhood with neat white houses. I'm glad it isn't some rich douchebag who will be owning my baby. My eyes scan house numbers, and I stop at a freshly paved driveway.

  • Her   Chapter 48

Two days later, I'm eating with Harriet, Mav, and the other Lab rats when my phone pings. The message steals my appetite. All students who are supporters of the rebellion must report to the Chrysalis immediately.Next to me, Harriet checks her phone, too. Even though we've been waiting for a message like this, fear uncurls inside me at the idea of facing the monster who orchestrated the slaughter on Circe Night.I squeeze Mav's shoulder. "It's time for me to go, buddy. You know the plan, right?"

  • Her   Chapter 47

Somewhere far away, Harriet is yelling at me, tugging on my arm, and dragging me down the hall. All of the sounds around me blend together in a hum. The headmaster's empty eyes stare at me. I'm a murderer."Joan, please!" This voice is new, and it calls to a place inside of me that hasn't gone dark."Justus?" I whisper, registering the panic in his kaleidoscope eyes. "I killed him. I killed him."He's shoving a blue uniform at me. "You have to leave. There wil

  • Her   Chapter 46

Rob twists the handle of the door, but it's locked. To my surprise, he pulls out a laser from his other pocket, which melts the metal handle in under five seconds. He puts the laser in the hole he created, and there's a small hum and a faint whiff of smoke. The door opens soundlessly. The room is lit with dozens of monitors, like theEmerald Citynewsroom. The screens on the sides display images of the audience, but the block of screens in the center all show the Strand promotional vid. Silhouetted against the bright light coming from the screens are three men and two women.

  • Her   Chapter 45

Three days of frantic planning blur together. I hole myself up in the Chrysalis, rehearsing every part of Crew's plan exhaustively. I work, eat, and even sleep there, only leaving twice, both times to secretly meet up with Justus so he knows what's happening. The level of coordination that goes into prepping for Circe Night astounds me. There isn't a Throwback in the building who isn't dedicated to some part of the plan.Dennis is making me practice hacking an encrypted video feed for the umpteenth time when Elizabeth joins us.

  • Her   Chapter 44

"It's keyed to the headmaster's fingerprints and retinal scan," Marie announces after examining the tablet I brought to the Chrysalis. "The only one opening this thing is the man himself."Marie, Harriet, Sun, and I are huddled inside of Marie's cube, trying to decide what to do with Maverick's gift."With the Manipulator, we have the means to force him to open it," I argue."We don't know what's on the tablet," Sun says. "Exposing the existence of the Manipulator is a high price to pay for an uncertain prize."
