Chapter One

Spencer Burton walked through the woman prison to see what changes he could make. He was just elected as mayor and one of the top requests was to improve prisons and provide programs for when an inmate is released in society. Some of these prisoners will never see the light of day but the ones that do, has no place to go, no money to go anywhere and most of the time no one to go to.

His footsteps could be heard through the corridor where some of the jail ceils lined up. There was a roar of cat callers coming from inside of all of the cells. He knew that he was good looking. Tall, tanned skin, glossy black hair, with golden haze eyes. His shoulders was board and he made sure he that he kept his imagine as this powerful man not by what he says and how he said it however my make sure that his body was well kept. His muscles was rock solid.

He was joined by couple of prison’s guards and the warden. Spencer leaned over to the warden as he whispered, “Well Tim, I see why these women needs programs. They need to be taught how to act properly in front of people.” Tim laughed as his short legs rushed to keep up with Spencer’s long strut across the floor.

As they made it passed the cells and went for the door as a guard was about opened Spencer heard a slight cough coming from the far corner of one of the cells. He didn’t see anyone in there when he passed. He leaned back to find a young woman with her knees against her chest as her face was buried in between them as she was trying to hid from the world.

He held up his hand to the guard as he moved closer to the bars as Tim walked around him, “Awe, Inmate 2284.” Spencer tilted his head at Inmate 2284 as he saw her brown reddish hair lifted to see a peek of blue eyes under her pale eyelids. Tim laughed, “Don’t be fooled by her innocent. According to court documents she is a true killer.” Spencer looked down at Tim, “Is that so?” Tim nodded his head, “Yup, she is the one that killed Sandra Alamda.”

She instantly snapped her head up when she heard the name when she whispered as she narrowed her eyes, “I didn’t even know who she was. How can I kill someone that I don’t know.” Spencer tilted his head in curiosity to know more. Is she innocent? Did she not known Sandra?

He heard about what happened to Sandra Alamda three months ago. She was a young actress that made her first movie. According to reports, they say that she was at an after party and someone heard Sandra yell ‘Please don’t Clara or Caria.’ When someone finally found Sandra in a guest room, she was stabbed multiple times. They found a knife with the initials C.P. They wasn’t sure about which one it was. Spencer heard the girl that was accused of it got a rough deal. Fifteen to life with no evidence that really tied her to the crime. If that true, then something got to change.

Spencer spoke with a stern voice to her, “Come to me.” Tim tilted his head to Spencer to try to figure out his thought process.

Why was he giving her the time of say?

He looked down at her delicate frame as she was all skin and bones. Her eyes sucked back as she hadn’t slept in years. She was trembling as she walked up to the bars. Spencer gripped his fingers around the cell by where her hands had gripped on to, “What is your name, Jail Bird?” She looked down as she whispered,” Ciara Philipps, Sir.”

Spencer tried to control what he was feeling as he heard her sweet voice whispering ‘sir’. His bugle in his pants was not taking his advice and laying down. He shifted his legs to hide the bulge as he looked into her blue eyes, “How long have you been here for?” Tim smirked at Spencer, “She been here for….” Spencer held his hand up at Tim, “I was asking her. Not you.” Tim’s eyes widened, “All do with respect sir. But this is my prison.” Spencer nodded his head as he kept his eyes on Ciara, “I know that, but this prison is in my town which means I pull rank.”

She looked up at him wondering what he met by his town.

Tim nodded his head, “Yes, Mr. Mayor.”

Her eyes widened when she realized who she was talking to. She used her left hand to itch on the orange jump suit when the arms of the suit risen to show stitches that was fresh. Spencer leaned into the cell with his hand and grabbed her arm when he pulled up her sleeves, “How did you get this?” One of the guards cleared his throat, “She tried to kill herself when she arrived the beginning of the week. She was just pulled out of the hole this morning.”

Spencer narrowed his eyes at her as he tilted his head, “Is that true, Jail Bird?” She stiffen up as her eyes never left the guard when Spencer cleared his throat to draw her attention back to him. She nodded her head, “Yes, sir. It is true.” He let go of her wrist as he straighten up.

There was something about her.

She was claiming innocent and Spencer felt there was truth to that story. They only evidence that was held against her was a knife that had no fingerprints but only her initials. The eyewitness that said they saw her was well known liar and would tell anything to anyone if it meant that he got something out of it.

Spencer wonder what he got out of telling the crazy story that he told of that night that changed that poor girl life.

Spencer whispered to her, “You can go back to your bed, now.” She nodded as she whispered, “Yes, Sir.” She turned as she trembled to get under the thin blanket as she hid herself again. There is something that happened to her in here and Spencer knew it. He was going to find out.

He cleared his throat, “I need a word with you Warden.” Tim nodded as the existed out of the corridor of cells when Ciara heard the door slammed behind them as she sank into her thin mattress. She felt a connection that she knew he felt when he touched her. He didn’t realize that she noticed that his touch was gentle as his thumb glided against the fabric of her jump suit.

Spencer exhaled when Tim and Spencer reached Tim’s office, “I want you to bring her in this room every day.” Tim eyes widened, “Who inmate 2284?” He nodded, “Yes, Ciara. I went to meet with her for lunch everyday until she is release.” Tim chuckled as he sat at his desk as his stomach reached the edge from his sitting position,

“Release, that one funny.”

Spencer placed his hand through his hair, “Let me ask you something. Knowing all the facts of that case. All the evidence and the person you see in that cell. Do you really think she did what they say she did?”

Tim shrugged his shoulders, “I am not the judge and jury, but if I was outside looking in. I would think she is innocent.” Spencer nodded as he sat back, “Have one of your guards bring her down and I want full privacy. If anyone ask you what I am doing, I am talking to her about her helping me start a program for woman inmates to get the proper education they need to make it once they are released.”

Tim winked at him, “Well, isn’t that what you are here for.” Spencer chuckled, “She will be my lead on this.” Tim got up as he asked a guard to bring down ‘inmate 2284’.

The warden gave Spencer his office while he waited for the prisoner as he made some calls, “I don’t care. Find everything you can on Caria Philipps.” His assistant gave him a sigh, “I will do what I can Mr. Burton.” He shook his head as he hung up the phone.

Meanwhile, Ciara sat on her bed not making a sound and not making trouble as she stared at the bars where she met the mayor of this town.

She didn’t know much of the town. She was just passing by when she got picked up and accused of the crime of murder.

They said someone in her description was seen running for the scene. She didn’t even know where the scene was.

She took a deep breath as she remembering how sweet the man was to her. No one has treated her well since she had shown up.

She pushed her knees closer to her chest when she heard her cell door opened and the guard walked in, “Inmate 2284, you have been requested to the warden office for a nice chat.”

She followed him as she wonder why she being summoned to the office. She walked with the guard when he pulled her into a broom closet when he pinned her up to the wall, “If you say what really happened to you on your first day here then there will be consequences.”

She looked down as she nodded. He placed his fingers on her chin, “You are going to be a good little girl.” She nodded as she tried to turn her head away when he released her wrist. He straighten his uniform as he cleared his throat, “good.”
