Lola's POV
Tana brought me to the mall again, did I forget to mention she's crazy about shopping?
After going around the mall for nothing exactly, we decided to sit and have a snack at one of the restaurants. I was eating, peacefully mind you, then she popped the question that sends chills down my spine everytime.
"Lola" She called, she only calls me that when it's time to be serious. "Have you told them?" She asked. Of course she was talking about me telling my parents about my dreams to go into fashion, full time. I sighed.
"Tana, are you seriously asking me that, you know I can't tell them, they'd be so disappointed " I breathed, somewhat frustrated with my dilemma.
"Disappointed? About you following your dreams? I've seen your sketches Lola they're amazing, you're really good at this"
Tana said looking into my eyes and patting my palm laid on the table, I sighed again "I know Tana, but mum and dad won't hear of it".
"Have you even tried? You keep dismissing the thought, when you haven't even tried to tell them" She was right, I was too terrified to say anything to them from the start, it's typical of African parents to be intimidating, you know.
Tana continued, "Try talking to your siblings they could help you out, I can talk to my parents to plead on your behalf".
I shook my head, dismissing the idea, my siblings or should I say my family In general, were never the supportive type, it's more like every man for himself in our home, a typical Nigerian saying in pidgin depicting this fact is; 'Everybody with their own oh".
It was the normal cycle in the Gregg family to do as our parents' pleased, they see a profession that 'suits'the child and they make sure he or she goes for it, without caring about the child's interests. All of my siblings had to face it and I guess it's gonna be the same for me.
"Tana dear, I don't want to get your parents involved, it might complicate things, and my siblings are a 'no show" I smiled, though it didn't reach my eyes. "Lola I'm not giving up on you like this, your parents can't keep controlling your life" Tana was determined, too bad I'm not.
I laughed "Hmmm defender, eat up and let's go home, abeg ". I said trying to lighten the mood. We went home shortly afterwards, Tana was still pressing on the issue but I kinda laughed it off, though I was still worried.
Laila was the only one in the family who knew about my dreams and aspirations, she supports me but our parents are too menacing for her to stand up to, especially because we're the youngest in the family.
I walked into the Estate my parents owned, our mansion is huge, more like one of those houses you'd see on magazines and start fantasizing about.
We have maids and all,but my mum loves to cook most of the time and whenever she isn't available, the daughters of the house weren't spared from kitchen duty, many people would think that affluent daughters were spoilt brats and didn't know their way around house chores and cooking, it's quite a shocker when other rich people visit us and they find out Laila and I cooked the meal they were served.
Our parents never failed to inculcate discipline and hard work in us,they drummed it into our heads right from childhood, we had never taken our privileged position for granted. And that, I'm thankful for.
I walked up to my room, freshened up and decided to prepare dinner before my parents came home.
I was halfway through with my cooking, when the doorbell rang, I was sure the maid would get it so I stayed in the kitchen, checking on the meal, I don't think mummy would be back so early, dad? No way
Yeah my parents are workaholics, they're not so old, having gotten married early and spilling all four of us in the blink of an eye. They've got pretty much a lot of years ahead of them.
I put off the stove and walk out of the kitchen, " Carol, who was at the door? " I asked the maid, while walking towards the stairs, and just before she can answer, I turn around to receive the shock of my life, I may have exaggerated a little bit *wink*
"Laila?!! " I screamed, I can't believe she's back!
I jump straight into her arms, "I missed you so much! " I squealed. She was laughing now.
"I missed you too sis, now let me go before you squeeze the life out of me",
" LOh" I said releasing her from my grip, before bombarding her with questions. "How was your trip? Why didn't you tell me you were coming? How was Dubai? ", she laughed again, showing off her perfect dentition.
"Relax fish, I just got back and you won't even let me go inside, shift jor".
She pushed me aside playfully, but I clung to her
"Its because I love you, so much" I pouted before kissing her cheek,
"Awwww I love you too sis and I missed you a whole lot"
We both laughed and climbed up the stairs, arms intertwined, we started catching up on stuff, almost immediately.
God! I missed her! *sigh*
*******************************************
The house was bustling with activity that Thursday morning, I was trying to not be languid in any activity I engaged myself as I hardly had any sleep the previous night."Aunty Lola, grandma said you should come and keep some fried meat for grandpa" Tobi said to me eagerly, he was obviously excited about the errand as he would have a taste of the delicacy."Oh" I groaned inwardly,Where do they want me to put it now?It was like my nephew had read my thoughts"She said you should put inside this cooler" Ayo jumped out of nowhere startling me"And put it in their bedroom" Arinola completedIt's like you people practiced this thingI frowned at the thought of climbing the stairs over and over again. I was exasperated already"Thank you for dropping the message, run along now"
"Good day sir" Grey greeted dad prostrating. There was a plastered smile on his face, I could tell it was because of the lady by his side. He isn't exactly cold as Travis but he's not very jovial, in fact, none of us were jovial when it came to Dad.Sad... Isn't it? "My son, how are you?"Seriously though, he has to call him "my son"?Does he have to do everything to spite Travis?God epp us o..."I'm fine Dad"Mum came in just before Dad could say anything else, with a small smile playing on her lips."Mummy good afternoon" Grey said still with that plastered smileWhat's doing this one? all because of woman, mtcheww"Femi..." Mum called languidly, she looked tired. Who wouldn't? Planning
I'm in deep trouble !Mogbe!!The silence throughout the drive from Aunt JoJo's place down to the house was deafening. I was even scared to breathe, I'm sure Laila was in the same situation.Yes that's how intimidating my mom isOnce in a while she would mumble things we couldn't decipher. She was really pissedLola see your lifeI fought the urge to face palm my self, I didn't want any death glares from my mom. Finally the petrifying ride came to an end as she drove into the huge compound.I stepped out turning to face Laila, she gave a pitiful look,at that point I knew I had to be strong. Hardly had we gotten in the living room when mom's voice thundered"Titilola!""Yes mummy" I answered after flinching a bit"What
It's finally Saturday!oh what a feeling! No work, just chores.. Ugh"Wait for it... In three, two, one.... ""Tolani!!,Titilola!!" Mummy screamed our names simultaneously. The countdown was me waiting for that call along with Laila. Mummy couldn't sit with the fact that we we didn't have anything doing, as we had finished up our chores for the morning. But it is typical of Nigerian mothers to dig up house chores at the slightest hint of inactivity from her children.Trust me it's exhausting to have her around."Coming mummy!" Laila yelled pulling me along with her, down the stairs.#Sister goals, I know right"Ehen, it's good you're here" Mom said, "I just fixed an appointment with the person who'll design your dress, she said she'll be here next Thursday, so you might have to leave w
**********"Do I have to?" I whined when James called me out to give Tunji a tour of the premises. I was a nervous wreck around that guy.James gave me a skeptical look, and I stood up immediately. Mr James Ololade was a man of few words, he's a strict one. His stares were enough to throw you off balance. He didn't entertain tardiness or flops of any kind, especially because the department we worked in was very delicate- any mishaps and we're done for. He had huge responsibilities on his hand, so I wouldn't blame him for being such a killjoy despite being a young bachelor. "I'll be on my way sir" I walked out of my office, a little bit flustered. I was going to see him again. I took the elevator again and headed straight for the CEO's office. Still nervous, I
Working was indeed hectic. Tana and I couldn't interact often cause she's very busy with her job.Okay... Confession. I totally envy that girl, her parents are so supportive and she even has her own place. Her parents didn't even object to that. She read the course of her choice, her life seems perfect, although she has her own issues. Okay that's enough about my bestie for now. Today's wahala is for Laila. I couldn't stop laughing when she stomped into my room. She was furious and I knew better than to open my mouth without her giving me the go ahead. Mr and Mrs Gregg were at it again, that's the only thing that makes her look so fierce, scary in fact. I gulped when she sat on my bed, still wondering if I should speak, when she finally spoke up."Your parents want me to get married" She said with an unusual calmness.I sat up on my bed, then I burst i
