Jack walked around the town for a while, allowing a moment to himself to just not think about anything or anyone, to be alone. He couldn't even remember the last time when he could afford such a luxury. After more than an hour of aimless strolling around, he ended up on the city beach. By then, the sun was at its zenith, but the breeze coming from the sea made the hot day bearable. He took off his jacket and rolled the sleeves up to the elbows before he took a seat on one of the benches placed along the shore.

Jack gave himself a few more moments of peace before he pulled his phone from the pocket and dialed the landline number in his home that he knew Marry is going to pick up. She refused to have anything to do with the cellphones for years now, and no one could make her use one.

On the third ring, Marry picked up and informed him of every single detail about his son, from how much he ate to how long his nap lasted. After bidding goodbyes to her, he contacted his PA for a quick follow up of the situation in his company. He was lucky that he used to keep strict control over everything. Managers and directors knew their job well, so he could afford to leave everything in their hands. Of course, when he returns, he will have to go through everything, but for now, he was not particularly worried. They all knew the consequences of possible foul play.

Jack stayed on the beach until the sun started to set, thinking about what he should do next. One thing he was sure of, his original plan to get two simple signatures from Margaret and be done with everything was not going to work anymore. No. Something woke inside him when he saw her. Even the mere thought of never seeing her again made him feel something that he could not identify.

He rose to his feet and returned to the restaurant where he knew Margaret will still be. This time, he made sure to take a seat at one of her tables. A minute later, she was there to take his order, and this time he had a chance to take a better look at her. Her deep blue eyes were tired, so tired. They looked at him, but there was no indication in them that they saw him at all. Her face had no color or shine, but still, she smiled while taking his order.

Jack did what he was not proud of, he checked her out from top to bottom. It was obvious, and she surely noticed it but never reacted, and Jack liked her lack of interest in him.

With every passing second, he was more and more sure of his decision because everything that he so far knew about her, he liked. Everything that he could conclude from the file that he got to all the little details he noticed while he watched her he sincerely liked.

She was not the most beautiful girl he has ever seen, nor was she the sexiest, but that didn't make him want her any less. What surprised Jack the most is that his attraction towards her was not purely sexual. No, there was something about her that called out to him, and he couldn't identify what it was. He just knew that he wanted her beside him, that he needed her beside him.

When the other waitress showed up to bring his check, Jack realized that Margaret was not there anymore, so he paid and left in a hurry. Remembering her address from the file, he made his way over there and parked the car couple of numbers down the street.

Jack sat there thinking of what he was doing and how he was acting. He was acting like a full-blown stalker. Disgusted with himself, he started the car and returned to his hotel. Desperate for a cold shower to clear his thoughts he went straight to the bathroom. But it didn't do him any good. It didn't stop his irrational thoughts and what he was yearning for.

The worst thing was, he could not explain all of this to himself, he could not understand his reasons. Jack was a rational being, capable of making decisions and signing deals in the business world that others saw as impossible. He never let his emotions or instincts to lead him, it was always his head that went straight ahead, and it always worked. He was never wrong.

But now? Everything was so messed up. His reason told him one thing, and his instincts screamed at him to do the opposite.

This, what he wanted to do, could ruin everything! His reputation, professional life, and even personal life, everything could go to hell. But still, he didn't want to stop, no. He wanted to take this girl home and keep her there.

The strange thing was, he had never felt like this before, never about some girl who, by the way, was too young for him.

Still conflicted with himself, Jack left his hotel room and made his way to the club, where he knew Margaret is going to be working tonight. He needed a drink, and he needed to see her again.

For a 50 dollar bill, a bouncer showed him which tables Margaret worked, so he would not make a mistake again. Her closeness caused him to want to tease her, to check her out openly, to see if she would react. Just as he thought, she ignored him, and the fact that he was right, that his estimation was correct, made him very, very content.

He repeated his order a couple more times while he watched her every move like a hawk. A plan was forming in Jack's head, and everything was clearer with every passing second. He was sure now of what he wanted to do. Alcohol worked like magic and calmed his tense nerves.

Leaving a generous tip, Jack left the club and returned to his hotel room to get some rest, hoping that the new day will shed some new light on what he saw today.

That's what happened. Morning brought clarity, and Jack knew what he is supposed to do. He picked a few papers from the stack that he brought with him and packed them in a folder and left the room.

He planned to settle both the bank issue and the hospital bills before he faced Margaret. And that's what he did, although he made the bank manager and the hospital administrator promise not to say anything to anyone by giving them what everyone needed, and a few people refused the money. To him, both of those could not make a dent in his bank account, so even if things don't go his way, he won't be bothered too much.

After everything was settled, Jack drove to Margaret's street and holding the folder with the selected documents in hand, he rang the bell and waited for her to open the door.

"I missed you so much, mom," Maggie sobbed in her mother's embrace. She was finally here, in Chicago."I missed you too. You have no idea," Rebecca whispered, tears were streaming down her face.Maggie moved back a bit, scanning Rebecca up and down. She was sitting on the hospital bed, looking better than she did in so long. Her skin was not as ashy as Maggie remembered it to be, at least she thought so. And her eyes shone brightly."You look good, mom, really good." Maggie's voice was beaming with happiness."I feel good, better than I have in a long time. Especially now, when I have you near." Rebecca sniffled. "Let me look at you!" and after she took a good look at Maggie, she added: "You look rested, and you are shining! Oh, I was so worried for you…" she sniffled again."I told you, mom, there was no need to worry," she said, and before she could say anything else, a discreet cough stopped her. She turned around and saw Jack standing in

Jack was about to leave his office when the phone on his desk rang."Hello, son. It's your father speaking. Your mother is very disappointed with you. Did we have to hear from someone else that you got married?" 'And here it goes…' Jack thought."Well, hello to you too, father. What you heard is right…" he was cut off by his father's strict voice."I am disappointed too, boy. Is this how we thought you?" 'It's exactly what you thought me,' Jack thought but said nothing, "We expect you for lunch this Sunday. Bring that girl so we can meet her." he never waited for Jack's reply, he cut the call when he said what he had to say.Jack sighed. The good mood that held him since early morning was now gone. His father, like always, managed to make him feel like a failure with just a couple of words. It was always like that, ever since he was a kid. Nothing he ever did was good enough in his father's eyes. When he was a child playing around the ho

Maggie woke up early. The sun was not up yet, so she made her way to the kitchen to make breakfast for her and the other adult resident of the house, Jack. Mary will not be coming today, and she was the one to prepare breakfast for them in the past days. Maggie and Jack never had breakfast together, except for her first morning here. She was avoiding him quite literally, but since she discovered he wasn't actually as 'bad' as she thought initially, she decided that she could afford to walk around the house more freely. She made a fresh pot of coffee and a plate filled with her favorite French toast, and she also cut some fruit she found in the fridge. She was just about to sit at the table and start eating when Jack entered. His hair was neatly combed, and he was dressed perfectly, not a single wrinkle on his smart suit. Well, he indeed was a sight to see, and Maggie just realized how much she started to enjoy it.Jack woke up today earlier than usual. He inten

“I used to come here with my friends from school so often that late papa Joey threatened to throw us out forever,” Jack chuckled at the memory, “but he never did. I continued coming here with my friends from college too. When you see the joint from the outside, you would never guess that they make the best pizza in the city.”Maggie was sitting across from him, and she was looking around, careful not to miss a word he said. The restaurant was indeed small and had only a couple of tables all covered with plaid tablecloths, but the atmosphere was perfect, homey and cozy, and the smells coming from the back… they were probably the most delicious and inviting smells she has encountered. They were both dressed casually, and this was the first time for Maggie to see him not wearing his usual white dress-shirt, but dark jeans and simple tee-shirt. She was in a cute, fluttery summer dress that reached just above her knees and strappy sandals.

Most of her days in the villa, Maggie spent in her room, and she went out only when she was hungry. She was enjoying the time she spent alone just resting, reading books she had found downstairs on one of the shelves in the living room. They were there for decoration and were obviously never touched. She talked with her mother every day, and each day she lied to her about how she lived here. They were both looking forward to the transfer and the day they will be able to see each other again.Weird phone calls stopped for a couple of days, long enough for Maggie to brush it off as someone's mistake, but on Tuesday they started again, and it was becoming disturbing since now there was not just silence on the other side but the sound of someone's loud and heavy breathing. She decided to report it if they continue to happen. But after a couple of days, she was starting to get bored. She wasn't the person to sit around and do nothing; she needed something to keep he

  • Meant to be   Chapter 16

It was early Saturday afternoon when Maggie started getting ready for the charity event she was supposed to go to with Jack. After the bath she took, she styled her hair with a cream she found in the bathroom cabinet; it made her hair shiny. Her natural, soft locks were on a good way to recover from the years of neglect. They looked decent now, so she decided to leave her hair free down her back. She removed a few strands from her face with some pins and added a little bit of mascara and eyeliner on her eyes that made her deep blue eyes stand out even more. A blood-red lipstick added to the look, and upon checking herself in the vanity mirror, she was satisfied with what she saw. Maggie never wore too much makeup. She hated the feeling of having a mask on her face, but she did like to accentuate her features a bit, so she found the middle ground. One thing she had to admit… there was a good side to this arrangement she made with Jack. She finally had time for her
