By the time Alexander returned to the bedroom, Eloise had woken up.

Alexander sat down and looked at her delicate face as he ruffled her hair in a doting manner. “Thank you for last night.”

Eloise smiled shyly. “It’s fine. It was so tough in the beginning, yet I managed to get through it with you. What does this suffering account to?”

The accident that happened that year had caused Eloise to lose her father. Alexander not only lost both his parents but also broke his leg. It was a torturous time.

If it had not been for her, he might never have emerged from the darkness of despair. She was so skinny… How had she supported him back then?

Alexander’s heart ached when he remembered how tiny Eloise had stayed up with him night after night.

That was when Eloise spoke. “Alex, I have something to confess to you.”

Alexander felt like laughing when he looked at Eloise’s tiny, serious face. “Go ahead.”

“I used your phone to make a call to Charlotte last night.”

The corners of Alexander’s mouth lifted themselves into a shallow curve. Now, that curve was frozen on his face as he found himself unable to smile anymore. “What did you call her for?”

“I’m sorry, I was so worried seeing how much pain you were in last night, but I didn’t know how to help you. Then, I thought of her. She had been with you for so long, so I thought she would know what to do.”

Eloise looked like a child who committed a mistake—helpless and on the verge of tears. “Don’t be angry, Alex. I had no idea that it was because of me that your relationship is so awkward.”

Alexander’s eyes grew cold unexpectedly. “What do you mean? Did Charlotte tell you something?”

He was familiar with Charlotte’s personality and was afraid that Eloise would get the worst of it.

Eloise shook her head but looked as if she had something else to say.

“Did she scold you?”

“No, Charlotte did not scold me.”

Eloise hurriedly explained by relaying all that Charlotte had told her to Alexander. She took special caution not to leave out a single word.

The expression on Alexander’s face became somewhat complicated as he listened.

Charlotte had always been concerned about his health. Whenever he fell sick, she would be so busy and heartbroken. It seemed that she would take his suffering for herself if she could.

He was allergic to alcohol, so she would not let him drink.

However, he was a businessman and could not constantly refuse his clients when doing business. Whenever he came back with red hives all over his body, she would first scold him fiercely before taking pity on him and nursing him throughout the night.

Now, his heart felt bitter upon hearing how Charlotte was ignoring him and leaving him to suffer.

Alexander took Eloise’s hand in his. “Next time, don’t call her. If there’s anything you don’t know, just ask me or the bodyguards next to me.”

Eloise nodded obediently. “Alright.”

In the afternoon, Alexander took a trip to Holmes Group, but he still did not bring Eloise along.

Xavier Holmes and his wife were deeply disappointed when they did not see Charlotte. They openly told Alexander that they would be taking a trip to Ocean City soon and that Alexander had to bring Charlotte along.

Alexander did not explain but merely stated that he would accompany her the entire time.

Walking out of Holmes Group, Alexander’s lips curled upward slightly as he gazed up at the sky. If he secured this partnership, he would have successfully expanded the size of Montgomery Group. The future developments of Montgomery Group would be smooth and unstoppable.

All these years, Alexander had been relying upon the Schuller family. He would make an appearance at their house every single day. Although he had not officially joined the family yet, it did not seem to make a difference.

He had endured his time in front of Quentin. He hid his talents and chose to be looked down upon and laughed at by everyone. He became the victim of their eye rolls.

Now, no one would dare to belittle him anymore.

No one else could stop him from moving forward anymore.

However, at that moment, Alex suddenly thought of Charlotte.
