View MoreExplaining my life is really difficult for me. My mind sometimes acts on his own. When I search for the right words to describe my journey, the words seem to hide. They hide in the darkest and coldest places, where I am afraid to venture.
My name is Isaac, I'm not tall in stature but I won't call myself short also. I have jet black hair that gets in a wrestling match with my comb every morning. My skin is dark and I have brown eyes. I have soft facial features and a weird stubble that does not want to grow the way stubbles should.
"Issac? Issac?"
I snap out of my day dream to find out that the whole class is staring at me.
My lecturer snaps her fingers inches away from my face, earning my attention.
"Are you okay?"
"Umm, yeah. Sure." I mumble.
The lecturer returns to teaching and eyes dart away from me slowly. I am in home room. This is my English class. I always do this, always daydream when I should be paying attention.
I look up at the oval clock at the front of the class on top of the whiteboard. One more minute remains before the class is over, and yet I have not heard a thing. I need help.
My grades are otherwise very good, I make good marks. The bell rings loudly causing students to walk out nonchalantly. I pick my book from my desk and insert it in my bag. I wake up to leave while placing my bag on my back. As I walk to the door, a tap on my shoulder startles me.
I turn around to the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen. It is strikingly gray and sparkles lightly from the sun ray coming from the window to the left.
"Hi." A smooth voice flows from her rosy pink lips. I then focus on her hair. My god. It falls freely on her shoulders and by just looking at it, I know how it feels. Silky.
I then focus on her eyes again and it holds humor. I then remember she said something.
"Uh, hi." I reply in a lousy manner.
She giggles and I swear. I haven't heard a sound so heavenly. What is happening to me?
"I need your help, the others told me you are the class rep." Her voice is more steady now. Firm, yet soothing.
"Let's walk." I try to act formal.
I walk out of the class and she follows closely behind. When we reach the busy hallway, I turn to look at her. I look at her from head to toe and my heart leaps. She is gorgeous. Drop dead gorgeous. She catches up with me and tries to whisper something in my ear but I don't catch what she says.
"Excuse me?"
"Everyone is staring at me." She whispers again in my ear.
I look around and truly, a lot of eyes are glued to her. That's because she looks a darn model.
I shrug like I don't care and pick up my pace. She tries to keep up.
My next class is noon and I have enough spare time. We reach the exit of the school building and the park can be seen. She walks close to me and I'm internally grateful for that. We step outside and the light warmth from the sun welcomes us.
"Look, I just need to get the English assignment from you." She startles me by saying when we reach the park.
"Oh." Is all I can say.
"Well?" This time she stops following me. I stop too.
"When is your next class?" I ask smoothly.
"Noon." She says with discomfort on her face. I want to smooth that crinkle on her forehead so badly.
"Okay." I start walking again and sit down on the bench only a few feet away. I hear her sigh and she walks closely behind me and sits down next to me.
"My next class is noon too." I say while searching my bag for a copy of the assignment. I find the copy and pull it out. I hand it to her and she seems confused.
"It's the assignment." I say with a smile.
"Oh." She smiles back too. "Thanks."
She pulls out her phone and takes a picture of the paper in her hands. She then hands the paper back to me.
"Seriously?" I chuckle lightly
"Yeah, seriously. This is the 21st century you know." She laughs lightly, revealing a glimpse of her pearly white teeth.
I nod and can't stop the rapid beating of my heart. I place the paper back in my bag and zip it up slowly.
When I look up, I'm met by those eyes again. This time, they hold inquiry.
"What's your name?"
She asks casually. "No wait, let me guess. Jason?"
"What?" I laugh loudly.
"I'm Issac. Why would you think my name is Jason?" I ask with humor in my voice.
She points at the jacket I'm wearing. A small tag is at the left pocket on my chest. It says Jason. I laugh even harder.
"I bought it that way!" I laugh and she joins me.
An hour later, we are in a coffee shop off campus. It is a small yet luxurious one. I have learned that her name is Jessie and that she is studying to be a writer. She is also a poet and I've been begging her since we ordered our coffee to say one of poems for me.
She keeps giggling and my heart keeps doing backflips.
"C'mon, just one." I beg her and pout my lips like a child. She rolls her eyes and smiles.
"Okay, okay." She finally gives in.
"Um, okay. Here's one." She clears her throat dramatically and I roll my eyes.
"The drums of war has ceased,
Or have I learned how to dance to them?
I have slipped again,
These slippery grounds have no mercy.
The darkness has revealed a new sense of light.
These demons stole away my soul again,
But God's angels reclaimed it back already." She finishes with a satisfied sigh.
"Wow, you are really good." I say in a stage whisper. Her words resonates something deep in me. They awake a sleeping beast named pain.
Her face holds worry as she stares at me. "Are you okay Issac?"
Just before I can reply her, the waiter brings us two huge cups of coffee.
"Have a nice day." The nervous waiter says. His uniform has depressing colors and his dirty blonde hair shows though he wears a baseball cap. I wonder why he is so nervous. I follow his line of sight and it lands on Jessie.
She is checking her phone and her beauty seems to mock me. He is clearly mesmerized by how stunning she looks, though she is dressed so casually. Her purple NYU sweater is saggy and her legs are covered with tight denim jeans.
"Geez, she is not a reality show. Go stare at your other customers, creep." I say, a little bit harsher than I would like. The waiter cheeks turns red from embarrassment and he flees away.
Jessie looks at me with her mouth opened slightly. She is clearly surprised by my words but I can see her mouth twitching into an amused smile. "Issac!" She half yells.
"Sorry." I reply like a child being scolded by a parent. Her smile widens at my response. "Don't be rude to strangers." She says in a formal mocking tone. My face seems to hurt a little from the huge smile on it. I nod and she giggles.
An hour or two passes and our coffee cups are empty. We don't order more, only water. We talk about everything. I feel so free with her. She even makes talking about a chemistry test fun. And trust me, chemistry and I don't vibe. I get good grades in it but it is what it is.
"And I didn't know my own roommate was a stripper!" She bursts out laughing and I follow her lead.
"Like I came to our apartment and I heard her singing 'Left cheek, right cheek.' while dancing." Her eyes shimmer with amusement as she explains about her roommate. She goes on and on about the adventures of she and her roommate. At some point, I don't listen. I just stare at how her rosy pink lips form the words. I watch how her gray eyes twinkle like stars that haven't been discovered yet. I notice how she pursed her lips when she noticed I wasn't listening.
As I was about to defend myself, my phone buzzes with an annoying alarm tone. Her phone does the same thing too.
I curse slightly when I see the alarm label. My noon class starts in exactly ten minutes. She too has a noon class as I can recall. I take out my wallet and pull a twenty dollar bill. I place it on the table and I pull Jessie gently so we can get outside. She lets out a small yelp when my fingers connects with hers. I too feel a sense of ecstasy.
"Wait, my phone. I left my phone on the table." She says briskly. She jerks her hands free from mine and runs inside the coffee shop. It is more crowded than it was this morning.
I follow her inside with my hands in my pocket and watch as she reaches the table we were on. Her phone sits at the edge of the shinning wood table.
"Jessie, time." I drag the last word to emphasize on how late we are. She grabs her phone and swiftly places it in her bag. "We don't have forever." I say playfully.
She rolls her eyes and places a rogue hair behind her ear. For a moment I'm distracted by her beauty, but then my eyes quickly diverts and lands on two bulky men that just entered the coffee shop. Fear grips my heart as I realize who they are. They have black masks on and simi automatic weapons in their hands.
"Okay everyone get on the ground!"
The taller one shouts. Gasps and screams are heard across the room. Jessie turns her head swiftly and her eyes meet the men. She immediately drops on the ground as if out of instinct. She lies flatly on the ground and her eyes seems to dance with fear.
I look around the room and everyone is doing the same. Everyone except me.
The armed man shoots a row of shots in the ceiling, bringing down a few debris. My heart jerks suddenly and I drop on the ground too.
"Oh boy, this is going to be a long day." I say to myself.
