  Patricia Vile sat upright in her bed and looked directly at the lens of the camera that was standing upright on the floor. A technician held up his hands and started counting down with his fingers, until he reached one, then he pointed at Vile. The red light of the camera came on.

  Kyle looked across at the number of soldiers walking slowly toward the front of the train. That persistent nagging filled his mind. He had a chance of saving these people. He looked back at Darcy. He had a chance of saving his friends. Was she really his friend? Kyle’s programming was telling him to finish his mission. Surrender and bring Darcy and the others to Vile. That was his main objective. But Something was telling him not to. Save these people. Save your friends. Kyle had decided. He would prove his loyalty.

  The weapons fire was relentless. The security trucks were intensifying their attack. Kyle gasped when he saw Lesley vanish, along with the compartment and called out the big man’s name, but it was a waste of breath. Kyle thought about jumping out to help Lesley, but what could he do? Lesley might be dead and with the repeated weapons fire, Kyle could be hit too. He had to move on toward the others. A whoosh shot by, missing the train by inches. Then another blast and Kyle was gone, running hard, breathing quickly. He was determined to reach the front of the train. He then heard the eruption. He felt the shudder.   ‘How are you feeling, Darcy?’ asked Jones, handing her a bottle of water. ‘Get this down you, it will help.’ ‘Thanks,’ groaned Darcy, gulping the clear liquid down her throat.

  The train was now directly in view, straight ahead and Darcy leapt up out of the sand, as if she were a snake, springing out of the ground to devour her prey. The sand quickly fell away from her body and in an instant, Darcy was on the move toward the train. Her mind was focused, she was waiting, but nothing happened and all she did was continue to run at a normal speed. The train continued to travel along the track and in a moment, it would speed by and she would have missed any opportunity to board.   The heat was relentless and burying their bodies under the sand was excruciating. The hours moved very slowly, until every member of the team felt like they would die. The breathing masks only added to the unbearable situation and even Kyle and Darcy felt the pain.
