Kate Middleton sat at the parlour of her new home, sipping tea and thinking of how fast her life had changed in months.
Within a month, she had lost her father to the sea and her mother had been long gone, died while she was with child. The child had not survived, neither had the mother. She had been living with her father’s cousin, Earl of Pembroke, his wife and his daughter, Cassandra “Cassy" Pembroke.
Thrust forcefully away, from her quiet life of nothing but looking at sheep, into the high socialist life of balls, dinner parties and courting, she had been certainly unprepared. Being her father’s only child, he let her do as she pleased, while he sailed the high seas. She had done nothing but count sheep, monitor her father’s shepherds and wool.
She took another slurp of tea, and wondered why father had never let her come to London.
“Kate! Where are you?”
“Over here Cassy, the parlour”She heard soft footsteps before her mini sized cousin appeared in front of her. Not that Cassy was that short, she didn’t look it, their height difference wasn’t much, but Kate liked to think herself the taller one.“Mama said you are to chaperone me as I go visit Hyde park with Lord Phillips”
Kate had already acclaimed herself a Spinster, as she could never own the charms and grace that city girls like her cousin possessed.
Although she still escorted Cassy to balls and enjoyed them, she had never dragged much attention to herself, therefore resigning to the fact of Spinsterhood.
“Do I now? What time those he arrive?”
“Evening. After dinner. I suggest you go dress"■■
Kate had a nap before dressing. She wore a coat, as the air was quite chilly, she did not understand why her cousin would enjoy a walk in such cold weather.“KATE!”
“Cassy! I am almost down!”She loved her cousin dearly, but she wondered if this lord Phillips would be able to withstand her guillotine- tongued sharp cousin.“I am down. Where is he?”
“Hush. Quincy just went to open up. He’ll be here soon —oh look, there he comes.”“Lord Phillips. It is with pleasure I welcome you to my home” her uncle, the Earl greeted.“Thank you" A male voice rumbled.“Your Grace. Welcome, Welcome” her aunt gushed.“Thank you madam. What about your daughter?”“This way, Your Grace”Kate’s heart studded as the trio approached.
The Earl and his wide entered, before a tall man who entered and suddenly seemed to suffocate Kate.“You have two daughters?”“Er, yes. Kate and Cassandra”They both bent their knees in a show of respect. Kate always felt a wave of gratitude whenever her Uncle and his wife introduced her as a daughter. She knew she was lucky and swore never to do anything that would knowingly hurt them. The Duke approached them before they raised their heads to look at him.“Archer Phillips. Duke of Edinburgh. At your service”
As Kate looked into the pair of black eyes, she felt guilty. She wanted this Duke.■
