Chapter 39 It’s Less Worrying When They’re Younger

Author: A Sleeve Full Of Cloud
Despite that, Sarah still felt a hint of disappointment lingering in her heart…

————

Penny was behind the wheels. She felt ill at ease during the entire ride.

The words of Yvette Fuller, Jacob’s wife, rang in her ears incessantly.

“Well, the thing with men is that it’s less worrying when they’re younger. You need to spend more effort to keep them interested once they pass the age of thirty because numerous young girls are waiting to pound on them. For instance, my Old Woods, and your Jon…”

Penny refused to comment but she understood Yvette’s intention immediately. She only attempted a polite smile.

She made a phone call to the villa by the sea early this morning.

However, the housekeeper informed her that Jon had not been staying there lately.

Taking that into consideration, Penny did not inform Jon beforehand about her intention to visit Xijing Villa.

The cell phone that she had placed on the passenger’s seat buzzed with vibration. Penny was annoyed but her voice remained sweet and gentle like normal when she picked up the call.

“Hello, Aunt…”

Madam Leeson had called to invite Penny to go shopping for jewelry with her.

Her invitation had been refused mildly. “I’m sorry, Aunt, I’m not feeling too well. I’m currently on my way to the hospital…”

Madam Leeson enquired thoughtfully on the other side of the phone. “Is it serious? Which hospital are you heading to? I’ll be there soon…”

Penny replied immediately, “It’s no big deal, really, just the normal flu. What about I head over to yours after visiting the doctor?”

“No, no, there’s no need for that. You should get some rest since you’re not feeling well. Oh, right, does Jon know?” questioned Madam Leeson.

Emotions chased over Penny’s features. “Not yet…”

“Eh? I can’t allow you to go to the hospital by yourself. I’ll call him right now so he could accompany you.” Madam Leeson sounded as if she was about to end the call.

Penny said quickly before the other person could hang up on her. “It’s fine, Aunt. I’ll call him myself…”

Madam Leeson on the other end of the phone finally felt more relieved upon hearing that. “Alright then, but you mustn’t go to the hospital by yourself no matter what. Do you hear me?”

“Okay, Aunt…”

A warm feeling filled Penny’s heart after putting the cell phone away. Madam Leeson had treated her well throughout all these years. If only Jon behaved the same toward her too, then he would not…

Her heart sank again at the thought of this.

Penny had been following Jon around for as long as she could remember. She liked the man dearly and fully respected him. She always trailed behind him no matter what.

However, Jon had not reciprocated her feelings. At the very least, he had been taking care of her like an Elder Brother before they started going out, but he had changed since they went exclusive.

Apart from the usual care for one another’s well-being, they had spent their time together mostly in silence. They were never like the other couples who always cling on to each other at all times.

Penny’s mother had once tried to comfort her. “This is common for people who grow up as childhood playmates. Your relationship will deepen by day once you get married and have kids. Look, isn’t that the case for your Uncle and Aunt?”

Indeed, Penny’s Uncle and Aunt had also grown up together since young. The two of them were so close that they could finish off each other’s sentences. They understood their partner’s desires and intentions with a simple glance of the eyes. Many others were jealous of this tacit understanding between them.

Penny relaxed at the thought of this.

She pulled into the driveway of Xijing Villa 45.

After battling against her thoughts, she decided to call Jon anyway.

She would rather believe the rumors she heard from Yvette was a misunderstanding than to consider the fact that Jon had a mistress beyond her knowledge.

She came to this decision out of respect for Jon and herself.

At the thought of that, Penny reached out to her cell phone.

However, the phone’s battery had died and it shut down automatically before she could reach the contact list.

Penny fumbled through the console box in search of a charger but it was to no avail. She finally gave up after a while.

She shifted her attention to the window. Not far away, a girl dressed in a beige color coat was speaking over the phone.

Penny pushed the door open and stepped out of the car. She took a brief moment to study the girl’s profile.

The girl was undeniably beautiful, the kind of attractiveness that made a lasting impression. Her long hair was fluttering naturally in the wind. Her small face was getting a little pale for standing in the cold for some time. Her facial features were impeccable and her body figure was fit and curvy at all the right places. Those fingers that curled around the cell phone in perfect angle were also clean and slender. In short, she looked effortlessly beautiful.

Penny walked ahead and positioned herself elegantly in front of the girl.

Sarah, who had just ended the phone call, could not help but lifted her head to regard Penny.

A peaceful smile spread across the latter’s face as she pointed toward the phone in Sarah’s hand. “Can I please borrow your phone for a short while? Mine has gone flat unfortunately…”

Sarah had encountered numerous graceful beauties in her life, but none of them had made her feel as comfortable as this lady in front of her.

Penny’s confidence and elegance were something that Sarah’s stepmother could never dream of achieving.

For reasons unknown to herself, Sarah could not help but have a good opinion toward this lady who she was only meeting for the first time.

The corners of her lips curled upward as she handed over the cell phone right away. “Here you go.”

Penny received the phone with a smile on her face. She noticed the suitcase positioned right next to Sarah.

Upon realizing herself being watched, Sarah’s cheeks blushed with embarrassment. She felt as if her misfortune had been exposed.

Sarah told a white lie deliberately to mask the awkwardness in the air. “I found a new tutoring role in this neighborhood but I’ve gotten a little lost…”

Penny smiled and nodded before lowering her head to unlock the phone.

She could memorize Jon’s cell phone number by heart but she quickly erased the familiar numbers a couple of seconds later. She changed her mind and decided to call the landline instead.

“Hello?” Aunt Wren answered the call.

“Hello, it’s me…” Penny said into the phone.

Aunt Wren on the other end of the phone was stunned for a couple of seconds before replying politely, “Ah, it’s you, Miss Jane. I’ll get Second Young Master for you right away.”

Penny mumbled a curt reply. Indeed, Jon was here as she had expected.

Several minutes later, Aunt Wren’s voice could be heard coming from the phone again. “I’m sorry, Miss Jane. I think Second Young Master is taking a shower. Should I tell him to return your call later?”

“It’s alright. I happen to pass by the area so I’ll drop by quickly since he’s here too. You must be busy…”

“Ah, I’ll get the door for you right away,” Aunt Wren replied into the phone.

Penny ended the call and returned the phone to Sarah. “Thank you.”

Sarah received the phone without even looking at it and waved her hands in the air dismissively. “It’s nothing.”

Sarah propped herself up on the bed to reach for her phone. It was not even 8:00 a.m. yet.She scratched her messy bed hair absentmindedly. Sarah could guess who he was speaking to just by the expression on the man’s face.Sarah’s uncle lived in the military base all year round. He rarely came home even for the festivals. On the other hand, his wife, who had been staying in France to help with their son’s study had settled down in France when the latter decided to stay abroad to pursue his career after graduation. Elder Shadwin turned around to notice Sarah changing into outdoor shoes by the door. “Where are you going again?”She made up a lie. “I left something behind at Maddy’s. I’m going to get it now!”The old man rose from the couch. “Why don’t you get Aunt Diane to retrieve it for you? It’s cold outside. Must you do it right now?”The girl pushed the door wide open, ignoring her grandpa’s concern.…… To say that Shadwin Residence was massive was an understatement. Sarah knew that it would take some time for Jon to reach the main gate. She took a shortcut by skipping the small-scale golf course and dashed for the back door right away.Shadwin Residence was a manor-style villa that occupied a large land area in the shape of an oblique triangle. If Sarah left through the back door, she would reach the side road that led to the main road in a short linear distance. She picked up her pace and began running in the end. Her brain was teeming with tangle thoughts that she could barely sor

Indeed, Sarah had always seen Jon and Jaclyn together in the past few days. That encounter in the clubhouse was a good example. She felt a surge of anger as she was reminded of Jaclyn’s flirtatious attitude.Maddy, who was sitting next to her, blinked back blankly as he posed the question, “Sarah, what are you planning to do?”Sarah lifted her eyes to throw him a deathly glare as she snatched the phone from his hand simultaneously. “What else can I do?!”She copied the content of the Weibo post and delivered it to Quentin’s WeChat without hesitation.A mischievous smile spread across Maddy’s face. “You cunning little fox. I think you really don’t wish the Groves a peaceful New Year. Your dad will definitely fly off the handle when he reads this news…”“…”Sarah refused to comment. She returned the cell phone to Maddy after getting back on Jaclyn. Two days before Chinese New Year, Jaclyn was shouting angrily at her agent in the corridor of Central Hospital.“Are you being serious? Didn’t you tell me that you’re acquainted with the mid-level leader of that website? Why haven’t you sorted this out?! How could they take the liberty to block my Weibo account? I’m a public figure and they’ve just violated my privacy. That’s illegal!”Vivian, the agent, appeared in a dilemma. She endured the reproach before trying to advise the other woman, “Elder Sister Jaclyn, please try to calm down. I’ve told my friend about this but he mentioned that it’s really out of his control. Although we live in a world of technology, you have thousands upon thousands of fans thus this might be inappropriate…”Jaclyn’s facial features twisted but she stood her ground. “What do you mean that it’s inappropriate?
