Chapter 9

>Lucas´ house. War room. Night.<

“What do you mean, Claire´s gone? Weren´t you supposed to be watching over her?” “I fell asleep. I was probably under some kind of spell.” Liam turns to me concerned. “What is she up to?”

The rest of the pack enters the war room. (Lucas) “I just heard that Claire disappeared. Do you guys have any idea where she is?” “That´s what we´re attempting to figure out.” (Amelia) “She hasn´t gone after Laurence, has she?” Then Amelia notices Liam´s wounds. “Liam your wounds. They´re not healing.” “It´s Laurense. Somehow his powers have been enhanced by magic, that´s why my wounds are taking so long to heal. He´s a danger to all of us. I don´t know what sort of harm he´s capable of inflicting to Claire.” (Lucas) “I´d be more worried about Laurence, if he meant anything to me, which he doesn´t. Claire is a very powerful witch.” I glace towards Lucas upon hearing this. Sometime I forget that Lucas is aware of this side of my mother´s life. Liam then turns to me. “Do you think your mother is going to kill Laurence?” “I don´t even know anymore.” Which is the truth. I never knew this part of my mom´s life, so I can´t be sure.

(Lucas) “What I don´t understand is why your mother is willing to reveal herself now, if she fears that her old enemies would come for her?” “That´s what I want to discover as well. What changed?” There´s a moment of silence as I try to contemplate this. Finally, I turn to Lucas. “So, how do we track her down?” “We don´t.” Everyone has turned to Lucas expectantly. There´s a spell of concealment surrounding Claire. That´s why Laurence tracked Liam to the lake house instead.” “That´s true. He was hoping that if he found me, Claire would be there too. But that wasn´t the case. But this time, is Claire is pursuing Laurence, she will find him at the abandoned Frogcreek House.” (Patrick) “Than that´s where we all should go.” “Tank, how long so you think my mother´s been gone?” “About twenty minutes.” (Liam) “Claire will still have to track Laurence down. That will take her some time.” “Perhaps we can cut her off before she reaches Frogcreek House.” “If Laurence is as powerful as you say he is, then we could use some back up.” Patrick said concerned. “Those wolves we freed from Nexus Labs would sure come in handy right now.” (Tank) “We shouldn´t involve them in this fight. They´re back with their respective families.” “Why Patrick? Are you afraid of vampires?” Patrick steps up to Liam, staring at him with steely eyes. “I´m not afraid of vampires. I just don´t trust them. And I´m concerned for Laura´s safety. For everyone´s safety. As the Alpha, that should be your priority.” “Don´t worry, Patrick. I´m here to protect the pack. And I won´t let anything happen to Laura.” (Lucas) “Guys, if you are done comparing...your testosterone levels, I think we should all move out.”

>Frogcreek House. Night<

The Frogcreek House is an abandoned manor on the outskirts of Wolf Springs, deep withing a wooded area. As I approach the house, I can sense my mother´s presence inside.

(Liam) “I can pick up her scent. She´s already inside.” “We need to hurry.”

The pack separates to form smaller groups, in order to take different point of entry. Patrick and I enter through a window on the east wing of the dilapidated manor. Patrick takes the lead as we creep along a corridor. He holds my hand. “Stay close to me, all right?” Suddenly, we hear voices coming from one of the rooms.

(Laurence) “Here you are.” We discover a hole in the wall and peer inside. I see Laurence lounging on an old sofa. My mom stands a few feet away from him.

If I want to stop this, I need to act right now. However, my instincts tell me to let this play out on its own. It´s now or never.

I decide to intervene before my mother does something, she might later regret. I burst into the room through the wall, shattering a substantial portion of it and sending splinters flying through the air. Patrick steps inside.

“Look who we have here. You do know how to make an entrance.”

“Mom, whatever it is that you plan on doing, it´s not worth it.” Laurence turns to my mom in surprise. “She calls you Mom. Pretty little thing.” Laurence then turns his gaze to stare at me menacingly. “Take a good look at your mother, for this is the final time that you´ll be seeing her.”

Laurence speeds towards my mom, however, my mom is quicker. Her hand wraps around his neck with an iron grip. Laurence looks as shocked as I am. “Mom! Stop! What are you doing?” My mom turns to look at me, and her eyes are glowing white. “You´re not a killer, Mom Let him go!” My mother turns back to menace Laurence, who is trapped in her grip, choking. The remainder of the pack burst into the room. (Liam) “Laura!” (Lucas) “Claire, don´t do it!” “Mom, please!” My mom´s face is consumed with fury. “I could easily separate your head from your body. I can kill you right this moment. But I won´t.” My mom´s eyes return to normal. “That´s not who I am anymore.” Mom drops the vampire to the floor. Laurence shoots her a murderous look. “You´ve just made the greatest mistake of your life, witch.”

Now lacking his supernatural speed, he flees the scene. I watch as Laurence escapes. Having just witnessed what my mom is capable of, I didn´t want Laurence to be near her. Laurence has revealed a dark side of my mother. And I don´t think I can bear to see this again.

>Frogcreek House. Night.<

“Laurence is gone.” (Liam) “Are you all right?” “I´m okay.” I turn to my mom. “What happened, Mom? I thought you didn´t want to reveal yourself because your old enemies would find you?” “I guess I grew tired of running. Whatever it is that´s coming, we must face it head up. It´s inevitable.” “Mom. I saw the hate in Laurence´s eyes. It´s coming from a place of tremendous pain. Whatever it is that you did, I won´t judge you. Although you have to be willing to share your story with me.” “I´m sorry that you´ve had to witness this side of me. My past isn´t exactly a fairy tale. I´m also not ready for you to know about that chapter of my life.”

(Lucas) “Laura, whatever it is that your mother has done on the past, that´s not her anymore.” “I know. And I understand.” “The past will return to haunt us one way or another. We just have to be prepared for when it does.” “We´ll face it together. All of us.”

(Patrick) “Now what do we do about Laurence? We can´t just let him run around town killing people.” “Whatever powers he had acquired, I´ve managed to nullify them. It will take him weeks to heal. He´s less of a threat now, although he remains a threat.”

(Liam) “Then we need to track him down and keep an eye on him. We must monitor his every move.” Liam turns to Tank. “Tank, I need you to do this for me.” “You can count on me Liam.” “Aas for everyone else, I think we should return to our usual lives. We need to spread out. That way, it will be difficult for the pack to be targeted as whole.” “Sounds reasonable. I think it´s time to return to my job at the hospital.” “I agree.” Patrick added. “If that´s the case then I´m going to make myself useful and accompany Tank.” (Liam) “That´s a good idea. Thank you, Amelia.”

I take Amelia´s hand and give it a squeeze. “You be careful out there.” “Laurence is the one who should be careful.” Amelia winks at me. “I´ll be staying with Lucas for the time being. I´ll call on all of you if we need the pack back together.” Liam turns to me. “I guess this is good-bye for now.” “I´m pretty sure, we´ll see each other around.” I give Liam a kiss in the cheek. Liam moves to walk Tank and Amelia outside the Frogcreek House. Patrick approaches me. “I guess I´ll be seeing you around the hospital?” “Yes, boss.” Patrick smiles and gives me a tight hug. He leaves all by himself.

“I can put you and your mother up in a nice hotel, if you want?” “Thanks, Lucas. But I think You´ve done enough for me and my daughter. I´ll be staying at the Redmond Inn.” “I think I should get back to my appartement. Me and Cynthia.” “We should go then. I don´t want to leave Cynthia snooping around my house for too long. Who knows what she´ll find?”

>Wolf Springs Medical Center. <

On my first day back at the hospital, I ran into Patrick in the parking lot. “Good morning, Dr. Fuller.” “Good morning, Dr. White.”

>Hospital hallway.<

As we enter through the hospital doors, Patrick holds my hand for everyone to see. And I let him. Everyone who works at the hospital starts staring at us. Some nurses who have the hots for Dr. White raise their eyebrows.

(Lydia) “Fuller. Welcome back. You too, Dr. White.” Lydia glances at our interlocked hands, giving me a meaningful look. “It appears I´m not the only one who needs to be briefed.” “I´ll see you later?” Patrick turned to me. “Yeah, see you.” Patrick lets go of my hand and walks away. I immediately feel the empty void he has left in my hand. “If you don´t mind me asking, are you two seeing each other?” I peer back in the direction where Patrick has gone. “It´s complicated.”

>Hospital locker room. Night<

That night following my shift, I am rummaging inside my locker when someone grabs me by the waist. “Hey!” I turn to see it is Patrick, shirtless. It appears that his shift has just ended as well. “Patrick! You startled me.” “Did I? I´m sorry.” Patrick stares at me and tucks a renegade lock of my hair behind my ears.

“I´m so pleased I get to be with you without that Liam hovering around. Or anyone else from our pack for that matter.” I laugh. “And yet you don´t mind our colleagues seeing us?” “It´s different. I feel like this hospital is my turf.” “What is it with you men and being territorial?” “Well, we are part-wolf after all. Don´t you feel it too? That sudden stab of jealousy when you see me around with someone else?” I think for a moment before responding. “Yeah, kind of.” “That´s being territorial.” I roll my eyes. “Fine. Whatever.” Patrick cups my face in his hands. “I´ve missed you.” Patrick kisses me and I let him. I simply stare at Patrick, smiling. “I´m going to Knox Bar for drinks. Would you like to come with me?” “I think I´ll pass. There are some things at home that I must take care of.” “All right. More drinks for me then.” “Don´t get too drunk tonight, okay?” “You do know we can´t get drunk, right?” “Right. Nevertheless, I want to take care tonight.” “You too, Patrick.” I give Patrick one final kiss on the lips before saying goodbye.

>Knox Bar. Night<

As I step inside Knox Bar, I am greeted by Lucas. “Look who´s here. Miss me, already?” “I miss getting drunk. But we both know I can´t get drunk anymore.” Lucas shoots me a devilish smile. “I have some wolfsbane hidden in the pantry with your name on it.” I look at him suspiciously. “Is that what you´ve been doing all these years when you got drunk, or were you just pretending to get drunk?” “Yes and no.” I punch Lucas playfully in the arm. “Cheater.” Lucas laughs.

At that moment, I spot Cynthia as she saunters over to us, drink in one hand. She´s clearly drunk. Again. What´s new?

Lucas speaks to me under his breath. “Is your roommate ever not drunk? Cynthia! Making the best out of happy hour, are we?” Cynthia gives Lucas a hug and kisses him on the cheek. “Oh, Lucas. You tall glass of water, you. You´re exactly what I need.” Cynthia sidles up to Lucas like a snake and blows into his ear. “Can you get me a tall glass of water?” “The bar´s right there, Cynthia.” “Isn´t that your job?” “I don´t work here. I own this bar.” “Oh. Right. Now I remember.”

“Cynthia, I think you´ve had enough alcohol for tonight.” “Don´t worry about me, darling. I´m just—Liam!” Cynthia cheers, putting her hands in the air. Unfortunately, that includes her drink. She spills her drink all over Lucas. “Cynthia!” “Oh! Sorry.” “I´m okay. I´m okay.” Liam hurries over to us. “You all right, man?” “I´m fine. I just need to change my clothes. I´ll be back.” Lucas exits for his back office. I turn to Cynthia. “Cynthia, you need to pace yourself.”

“Why don´t we all get a booth? I´ll get Cynthia some water, and I´ll go get you a drink. What will you have, Laura?” “Tequila.” “All right.” “Thank you, Liam.”

I lead Cynthia into a booth and we both sit down. “Oh, Liam is so dreamy.” “That he is.” I smile in spite of myself, pleased that Liam is here. I guess I miss having him around. Spending an entire day without him leaves a void inside of me. “Those arms are just to die for. I could probably live in those arms for the rest of my life.” Cynthias blowing.

I watch Liam as he orders our drinks from the bar. Underneath his clothes, I imagine his naked body. I want to lick his sculpted abs and kiss his powerful biceps. Those muscular legs that are able to crush me with pleasure. And his cock.

I wonder if he´s hard right now. I grip the folds of my skirt as the lust seems to surface, a beast seeking to break free. I bite my lip as I watch Liam´s every move. Liam walks over to our booth and sets our drinks down on the table. “Here you go, ladies.” “You know what? I think I should just call it a night. I´m too drunk. Liam, will you call me a cab?” Liam turn to look at me. “Go ahead, Liam. She really needs to get home.” “Are you going to be okay here?” “Of course. I´ll be fine.”

Liam then turns to Cynthia. “Let´s go, Cynthia.” Liam, being the gentleman that he is, assist Cynthia with getting to her feet. Cynthia takes advantage of the situation, hooking her arms into Liam´s and resting her head against his shoulder. “Oh, Liam. You´re my hero.” Liam just smiles and turns to me. “I´ll be back in a second.” They both leave.

“He´s quite the ladies´ man, isn´t he?” Lucas, now wearing different clothes, slides into the booth beside me. “Hi.” Lucas is clearly acting weirdly. Has he been putting wolfsbane in his drink?” “Uh, hello?” “There´s something about an Alpha that is so inviting, even to ordinary women. Doesn´t it makes you jealous?” “Liam and I, we know where we stand. We´re free to see other people.” “Interesting choice of words. Seeing people.” “What do you mean?” “I guess I can say that I see people in a different way.” Lucas moves closer to me and I catch a whiff of his scent. It´s the same familiar scent, although somewhat different than previously. “What if I told you that I perceive you in a different light?”

Strangely enough, I sense myself being drawn to him. “Lucas. I...” Lucas leans in closer to me, and I can feel his breath against my face. I can´t help but feel an attraction towards him. It´s a powerful connection that transcends all reason. Lucas leans in for a kiss, and I close my eyes in anticipation. My mouth welcomes him as his lips discover mine. I return his kiss, tasting his lips for the first time. I pull away to look at him.

That´s when I see another Lucas standing behind the Lucas I just kissed. “Nolan! What the hell?!” I look from one Lucas to the other, dumbfounded. The man I just kissed is not Lucas but Nolan. “Hello, brother...”
