“She’s not so nice, is she?”

“Adley? She is like any other spoilt girl around here. I’ve never had any run-ins with her as I rarely go to their gatherings. The princess likes to move around with Cherry for some reason. So, I’m usually left with regular maids like you.”

Arya smiled. “Isn’t that supposed to be offensive?” “What?”

“You calling me regular maid.”

“But aren’t you?”

“I guess. I’m not anyone’s maid of honor. Maybe one day I will get the title.”

“It might happen sooner than you think.”

“Why?”

“Ann. I don’t see her. She’s neither with those who went with the queen or those receiving them. On such occasions, the queen mother requires all her maids of honor to be here. Maybe she got fired”

“I wonder where she is.

“She’ll turn up, I guess.”

“I hop she does because much as I’d like to be a maid of honor, I don’t want to be the queen mother’s maid of honor.”

“I know,” Mercy said.

By now, the royals had gone inside and the other women were probably rushing out to greet the queen mother and welcome her back even though most of them probably hated her. They were also probably jealous of Adley and wanted to gain more favor.

Outside the palace, the king was considered the epitome of morals but after her meetings with him, Arya was starting to think otherwise and was inclined to believe the hushed gossip about Orianna covering up for him. He was no saint and there was a chance that he might have tried or get it on with a few of those girls shed served.

“You’ve never really told me much about yourself,” Mercy observed a few minutes later. They were now seated on mercy’s small bed. The beds in the servants’ quarters were very small just like the rooms. Adley liked it that way, too. More privacy for everyone. It was better than having a bigger room which you had to share with one or two others. The little bathroom sized rooms were better. Whoever had come up with the idea had been a genius.

“Because there’s no much to tell really,” Arya said. “I don’t know much about you, too. We’ve recently just met so with time, we’ll get to know more about me.”

“The others say you seem to be secretive.”

“Secretive? More like introverted. I just don’t say much.”

“Probably. Some of them are just loudmouths anyway. They always need something to gossip about. If they can’t get anything to talk about, they’ll manufacture it.”

Just then, they heard noise of people gathering in the hallway. They got up and went outside the room to se what was going on.

“What’s up?” mercy asked.

“It’s about Ann,” Jessie said.

“They found her body,” Cherry said.

“What? Where?” Arya asked. She figured it had to be something related to the palace. She’d always known it was dangerous and there was actually proof.

“They found her body in the woods. Apparently she was stabbed and drowned.”

“Oh my goodness!” Mercy exclaimed. “I can’t believe it. Who would do such a thing?”

“Now, I know Ann wasn’t a nice person but she never really seemed to be interested in anyone’s business.”

“She had gotten quite arrogant recently,” Jessie said. “I think the king had slept with her.”

“The king is with Adley,” Arya said, waiting to gauge the reaction. She earned a few laughs and snickers. “Newbie, you don’t know anything.”

Arya was not fazed. “Well, it seems no one liked Ann that much. I don’t see tears.”

“If you die we wouldn’t cry either,” Jessie commented. “Now if someone like Cherry died.”

“Don’t even say that out loud,” cherry said. Superstitious? Probably. She was generally nice and had been there longer than most so Arya could see why she was well-liked. She was the one who showed everybody how things worked in the palace and she did it quite well.

When they dispersed and went into their rooms, Arya locked the door and sat on her bed. If Ann had been killed, then it was unsafe. if she had really slept with the king, that would be the reason someone had done her in. maybe she blackmailed him and got done in. maybe it was Adley who dint want anyone to block her way to the queen Dom or Orianna the evil witch herself who definitely did not want a maid sleeping with her son.

Getting close to the king was dangerous for Arya and she had find  a way to stay away until it was clear what happened to Ann. If it turned out to be another jealous maid, she could handle that. But the royals, she want sure.

The fact that Patrick’s whereabouts were still unknown was even worse. She dialed Kalen. He didn’t pick up. She tried again, no answer. Arya started to feel worried. She was in this with Kalen and even though sometimes she thought she could, she knew she wouldn’t be able to complete the revenge mission alone. She needed Kalen. Hoping nothing had happened to him, she decided to go take a shower in the communal bathroom.

This was not a book club but an excuse for high society young women to come together for wine and gossip. Listening to their conversation as she refilled the wine glasses, Arya realized the girls were no different from the maids. They came together to gossip about other women, men, fashion, beauty and everything lifestyle. Except that their standards were higher in regards to all those things, everything else was more or less the same. Arya wondered why they even bothered to call it a book club. There were nine girls in the room but Arya only recognized Adley and Princess Ava. While Adley and her friends tried to outcompete each other on who led the most luxurious lifestyle, the princess was buried in her phone, minding her own business. It seemed she was not as pretentious as the rest were. The book, some romantic comedy with a beach cover, graced by a shirtless tan man was long forgotten. Copies were lying around on tables and Adley wished they wo

What was it with stupid, dumb maids, Armand wondered as he made his way to the doors of the palace. If he loved her, he would wait. He scoffed at the sentence, wondering who kept feeding women with all the stupid lies. How special did she think she was? A poor maid with nothing but a beautiful face on her head. Sure, he’d wait. Not because he loved her or any of that nonsense. But because he needed a distraction from Adley’s crazy antics. He had been stupid to think he could have more than want for Arya. She was dumber than he could have ever imagined. No, why earth would he want a woman who probably only thought and talked about nothing but gossip, handsome men, and marriage? She was probably envisioning herself as the next queen of Niveria. She’d even dream of him, tonight. And to think she had agreed to find a way to get rid of Adley. Armand laughed as he went into his suite. This was going to be interesting to watch. What would an ant like Arya do to the dangero

The king was seated on a wooden bench, close to one of the overhead lights. His physique was illuminated and Arya could see the outline clearly.“You can go now,” he said to no one in particular, in his baritone voice. In a few seconds, Pittas had vanished leaving Arya to face the young monarch. She walked a few steps closer.“My king,” she said, taking a respectable bow. He did not even honor it with a glance.“Come and sit,” he patted the empty space on the bench.“Okay,” she said and did as told. The king was silent. What was he feeling? Disappointed? Angry? Those would be prime emotions if he had found out that the innocent damsel in distress had turned out to be a scheming evil witch with a strong desire to see his family in ruins. And then he turned. His beautiful face was so close. There were many evil thoughts swirling in her mind as she looked

“How are you,” Princess Ava asked Arya when she delivered tea to her studio. She had finally got to chance to enter the glorious studio.“I’m okay,” Arya said, pouring tea into a cup.“What do you think of my paintings,” Ava asked. The room was spectacular. The paintings were amateur-ish but very lovely. It was clear to see that they painted in different stages, she was getting better as time went on.Arya studied the paintings. “They look really good.”“Thanks but I think you’re saying that to please me. Most of them do so.”“No, I really mean it.” Arya looked at the beginner ones. “Did you start with those?” she pointed at them.“Yes,” Ava smiled, as if remembering a beautiful memory. “They’re so bad, aren’t they? Mom said I shouldn’t hung them but I won’t listen to her. I like to look at them, my first babies. They remind me of how far I’ve come and to no repeat the mistakes I have made. She won’t allow to hang any of my paintings d

That girl. The new maid. Recently, he had been thinking about her a lot. He could remember her pale face, water dripping off her hair, trailing down her face and mouth. Those lips. He felt like he wanted her, but he wanted nearly every female in close proximity. This one seemed different it confused him. There was some kind of emotion or feelings or he was just confused with what was going on in his life. He shook his head. How could he fall for a mere maid, without any royal blood, no class, inheritance or anything?Surely, such nonsense only happened in movies and books. Not in real life. It was probably what all the maids dreamed of. To be the ones who finally tied down the handsome. The unique ones who could change him. Ha Ha. As if that could happen. From his experience with women, which was a lot, he had realized they were all pretty much the same. Some might pretend and act all manly but if you removed the outer shell, you’d have your typical woman. Vulnerable, we
