View MoreAdaeze laid low in a corner around the brothel, her eyes searching around for Nnenne amongst the people the police had grabbed. When she saw no sign of her, she wondered if Nnenne had left before the police arrived.Seeing Nnenne's tension had diminished, and the cops had left, he removed his hand from her mouth. His face was hard and unsmiling as he gripped her wrist firmly, taking her out of the corner and away from the brothel through a back route.
The lecture hall walls were bare and the windows large. Lots of wooden benches were arranged in rows and columns, a podium with a microphone on top of it was positioned at the front, clear enough for everyone to see from every corner.Behind it was two fused white marker boards with calculation scribbling. The hall had emptied after the end of evening lectures, leaving only Nnenne and her friend, Oluchi.
Lanre's eyes flashed with indignance and anger, much like lightning in a black clouded sky. Adaeze couldn't recognize him anymore, she gulped nervously and looked away, her face lowered because she was too ashamed to look him in the eye. Lanre proceeded towards her, his glare unmoving and accompanied by a deliberate slow breathing, like he was fighting something back.
As sudden as a snap, Lanre awakened to the sound of the doorbell. In a fusion of fear and bewilderment, he glanced at Nnenne, who was sound asleep. He wondered who it could be at that hour and even worse, what would they would think if they saw her.The doorbell rang out more impatiently, he threw off the blanket and shut the bedroom door after him as he reached to open the main door. He was relieved when he saw it was Adaeze.
