Chapter Seven

2020-10-02 13:11:39After discharging Edna from the hospital, Mrs Coker requested that they both go to her residence. Edna asked to go get her things alone, Mrs Coker packed her car and walked towards the end of the market to get groceries for their dinner that evening. Edna wore a hardened look on her face to avoid the eyes of people, she hastened her footsteps and made no eye contact with anyone. As she walked her eyes caught sight of some gangsters who smoked Indian hemp as the smell went into the air. She got to were her cardboard was and brought a bag which contained her belongings, she shoved it back into an aluminum zinc that had an opening by the side as the things she owned were now with her. Her pace slowed down after taking her things as she went in search for Lovelyn walking past roadside traders, laundry shops and some group of boys who played football in an open field. When she got to one of the wooden shack, which was closed to the abattoir her pace slowed down as she knocked on the door. Lovelyn walked to the door with a disdain look and was thinking on who had rudely interrupted her sleep. The bolted door was struck by her as she came out yawning.
"Edna," She shouted joyfully as she hugged her happily.
"How are you?"
"I am fine."
"I have been searching for you." She said touching her whole body.
"I was admitted at the hospital."
"What! hospital," She exclaimed with a look of surprise written all over her face.
"What happened?" She asked inquisitively.
"I had an accident." She told Lovelyn of all that had occurred and finally ended her statement by telling her of her departure. Lovelyn felt happy for her, knowing that she finally had some where to stay. Shortly after, her face wore a look of sadness because she wasn't sure when they will meet again. She followed her to the street and stopped at were Mrs Coker car was parked and hugged her tightly as she finally said good bye.
Edna lay on the car waiting for Mrs Coker patiently to come, she finally showed up at noon after long hours of Edna waiting. She grouched tirelessly as her leg shook from standing so long. Mrs Coker apologized for her lateness as they got into the car and left.

She let Edna settle down in her new room, Edna changed into a new set of clothes that Mrs Coker bought for her and headed towards the kitchen to help prepare supper. That evening when dinner was served, everyone of the family settled down at the dinning table to eat, they ate quietly until Rose the last child broke the silence that was in the air for a long time;
"Mummy, who is she?" She questioned smiling and pointing towards the direction of Edna. Her mother smiled at her and she timidly smiled back innocently arranging herself into her chair in a way that one could see that she was still a growing child who enjoyed the comfort of her family.
"She is part of the family now okay." Mrs Coker reply came out slowly in a way that everyone could hear, no one asked any questions. When dinner was over they all gathered up for their night devotion which Mr Coker despised but had now become accustomed to it. The next day Mrs Coker felt her instincts tell her, to know about Edna's background and family. She knocked on her door on the dawn of the day when all of man's inhabitants were still awakening, to the rising of the sun. Mrs Coker stepped into her room which was nicely organized by Edna as she had made the room look beautiful and her things were neatly arranged.
"Good morning." Mrs Coker greeted as Edna replied in a shy manner to her.
"Would you like to take me to your home today so I can meet your people?" She asked.
"Yes I will gladly do that and I won't hesitate to introduce you to my family properly." Edna replied reassuringly.
They started the journey to her home after the whole house hold had been fixed on their daily routine for the day. It took about five hours to get to her home town. The streets were filled with a lot of people going about their business, the sound of the car horned and then came to an abrupt stop thereby attracting the attention of individuals that resided in the vicinity. The compound was filled with the chattering sounds of children playing happily. They came down from the car and "Mami Sola" was seen waiting for them at the door way with the look of inquisitiveness written all over her face. She went towards them and welcomed them when she caught sight of Edna, before then she was at the kitchen preparing lunch for the family. Her heart felt glad to see her grandchild again, it had been a long time since she set her eyes on her since her departure to the city and seeing her again looking beautiful and grown up brought joy to her. "Mami Sola" led them inside the small room they inhabited, she hugged and touched her body in a way that signified that she felt happy as she looked healthy. She left them and went to get a chair from their neighbours as they were no chairs in the small room.
"Please, you may sit down," she said offering a chair to Mrs Coker who looked around the small room. Mrs Coker sat on the plastic chair that
"Mami Sola" placed for her. Edna went to the edge of the bed and sat down adjacent to them, she turned and looked at her grandmother.
"This is Mrs Coker, I have been staying with her for sometime now." She gave a slight pause then Mrs Coker introduced herself and explained her encounter with Edna.
"How is Modupe doing?" She questioned looking at Edna who looked at her to give a reply.
"Mother Modupe is evil, she had no sympathy in taking care of my welfare. She is in a dangerous gang that goes around deceptively collecting young girls from different homes and getting them involved in criminal activities. I fell victim which almost led me to my doom, her face became sad as she ended her story.
Mrs Coker looked away and turned again towards them as she pledged to be of help to them in the best way she can.

For sometime now, she felt safe and had obediently worked for them but things had turned around so soon as she became a part of them, but Mrs Coker had let her stay with them despite the circumstances surrounding their lives. Having lost her job, she decided to go sell some wares at the street market down the road but already she had made some contacts with people to notify her when a vacancy for a job is on. She also dropped some application letters in some of the companies that had vacancy. The seasons for the rains had come and it seemed to Edna like the gate of heavens were open as rain fell down heavily. She heard a sound but could not detect immediately if it was her mind playing games with her or a reality. She recalled that she had seen a strange man at the kitchen during the weekend but the idea of telling Mrs Coker wasn't a pleasant one as she felt it was inappropriate considering the emotional turmoil she was experiencing. Cold shivers ran through her body as the thought of strange figures moving around the house scared her.
