Chapter 26 Argument

Liu Longting calmly took the pajamas that were on a chair. As he was putting the clothes on, the knocking on the door stopped and was followed by the sound of soft footsteps coming out of the room.

That thing was here! Our bathroom was right next to the dormitory room door, so I could clearly hear the sound of footsteps walking past the bathroom entrance. It was the faint sound of bare feet on the floorboards.

I was so scared that I did not even dare to imagine what had just walked past the bathroom entrance. Thankfully, Liu Longting was possessing me, or I would not have dared open the door.

After Liu Longting finished putting on the clothes, he opened the bathroom door. The sound of footsteps had already reached the inside of the dormitory room. When Liu Longting looked into the room, I saw a tall and large woman wearing a flower-patterned shirt and black pants standing next to my bed. It was staring at my bed, and, possibly because I had already made the bed, it started to reach its pitch black hands out and clawed my bed. From its mouth I could hear “tsk tsk tsk tsk…” It sounded like a rabid animal. It looked extremely excited and also extremely angry.

“Its target was you all along,” Liu Longting told me.

A blankness seized her face when she heard Liu Longting. It was as if she was pondering something. Then she turned to furiously look at us.

Oh my g*d, when the woman turned to face us, I was scared witless!

The thing’s face looked as if it had been censored, like the pictures of my girlfriends and I in high school. It was the face of one whose features had been ground to nothing, leaving behind a film of flour in place of skin.

Despite the thing not having eyes, she could still see me. She slowly retracted the hands that were clawing the bed, and she started crawling on the floor like a huge rat. It silently crept toward me.

Liu Longting looked at that strange thing. He acted as if he was too good to touch such a low-grade thing and came out of my body. Casually, he handed me a few talismans, saying that I should stick it on the thing’s face and it would disperse. He questioned the intelligence of the sender, sending such a minor thing to haunt the space.

When Liu Longting came out of my body, I was so scared of that thing stalking towards me that I shouted at Liu Longting, asking him what was the meaning of this. If he was going to help someone then don’t do it halfway! I was terrified!

Liu Longting did not even spare me a glance, saying I would need to experience these things eventually. He told me to hurry up. If I could not find the courage to handle such a minor thing, how would I handle more powerful foes in the future?

In the future. Would I not have him in the future? If he was not there, I would not even touch these things. Why did I have to handle it myself?

As I was lamenting in my heart, I was backing away from that lady. It was as if that lady had locked onto me. It did not even look at Liu Longting. It stalked me with determination.

The feeling of being chased by something that wanted to kill you was unbelievably horrifying. I looked at the faceless lady, as she slowly backed me into a corner. She lunged at me, trying to stick her large face to mine!

I had nowhere else to run. In my hand, I held the talismans that Liu Longting gave me, but I did not dare raise my hand to stick them on that organless face, afraid she would rip me to shreds. I looked at Liu Longting a few times, but his uncaring expression just made me want to spew vulgarities at him. She raised her hand, aiming at me. I had no choice. I closed my eyes and slammed the talismans clutched in my right hand into her head.

The talismans entered her head, and the lady in front of me started to twist and turn weirdly. A sharp cry came out of that head, and suddenly, the entire body rapidly evaporated in front of me!

It was gone!

I breathed out a sigh of relief but did not want to pay any attention to Liu Longting. I sat alone on a chair and drank a cup of water to calm myself.

Liu Longting noted my mood and walked toward me, asking, “What’s wrong? Are you angry now?”

“No, how could I possibly dare be angry with you?” I turned my head away from Liu Longting. He could have dealt with that thing so easily. Why did he deliberately scare me for no reason? Humans were naturally afraid of the supernatural. Did he not know that?

“Look at how cowardly you’re being. From the day you agreed to be my shaman, there was no way you could avoid these things. You’ll encounter things many times scarier than that female ghost in the future. If you’re afraid now when I’m right here, then, in the future when I’m not around, you’re going to die of fear.”

Liu Longting said these things with a stern expression. It was as if he was mad at me. I was already unhappy, but, with his lecture and attitude, my irritation was exacerbated, so I turned around to say to him, “You should have given me time to prepare if you wanted me to deal with that thing. At least with some notice, I would be able to get myself ready mentally. I know I’m cowardly. I want to be cooler too, but the moment I saw that thing I…”

My throat started clamping up as I spoke. The more I explained, the more it felt like I was looking for excuses for my cowardice.

Liu Longting did not respond. I lowered my head in silence, wondering if he was disappointed in me. All the other shamans I’ve met so far have been better than me, and Liu Longting was right. It was but a weak little ghost. All I had to do was stick a talisman on her forehead and all would have been well. Yet, I was scared out of my mind. How could I possibly accomplish anything in the future? Liu Longting was being considerate of my future, yet all I did was obstinately argue with him.

In my heart, I wondered if Liu Longting felt I was useless and had no potential. Would he leave me and find a different shaman to cultivate with?

When those thoughts flooded my head, I started to panic. I quickly raised my head to apologize to Liu Longting. I did not expect Liu Longtin to cup my chin with his hand the moment I lifted my head. His lips gently touched mine, and we embraced each other, taking in each other’s warmth.

I widened my eyes at Liu Longting. Apart from the usual things we did, this was the first time he had kissed me.

Liu Longting caught my stare and adoration flashed in his eyes. He covered my eyes with his hand and kissed me deeply...

“Bai Jing! I’m back…!”

Yao Na suddenly came in from the entrance. The moment she stepped inside, she saw Liu Longting kissing me and an awkward expression flashed across her face.

I hurriedly backed away from Liu Longting and apologized to Yao Na. I had no idea she would be back now.

Yao Na was awfully cheerful, giggling as she said, “Didn’t you say just now that he was just a normal friend? See, kissing when I’m not here. I wonder what you two would have been up to if I didn’t come back when I did.”

“How could we? This is still our dorm room.” The awkward one was now me. I felt like I had been caught red-handed doing something I should not have been doing.

“Fine, stop making excuses. What’s done is done. What are you afraid of? It’s me, not anyone else.” As Yao Na said that, she raised her head and looked at Liu Longting. Liu Longting returned the look and smiled at Yao Na saying, “If you don’t mind, we can always put on a free show for you.”

I immediately pulled Liu Longting aside, asking him not to speak nonsense. Yao Na was still one of my best friends, but now that Yao Na had seen what she did, Liu Longting definitely could not stay in the room tonight. I put on my coat and told Liu Longting I would send him off downstairs.

“What’s the rush? The dorm master hasn’t even said anything. Bai Jing don’t be in such a hurry to send your boyfriend off!”

I did not know why but even though what Yao Na said was perfectly normal, I felt traces of dissatisfaction in her words.

“Sit, sit!” Yao Na pulled me towards a chair, and said in front of Liu Longting, “Bai Jing, do you remember that tomorrow is our classmate Wang Xuan’s birthday? Weren’t you flirting with him last year during his birthday? You said something like, if he did not have a girlfriend this year you would be his? Wang Xuan has been single till now because of what you said. You shouldn’t lie to him, you know.”
