Chapter 1

1

It was Angela's only day off. He had spent the last few weeks here and there, meeting after meeting, talking to the right people to ensure the continuity of his humble company. That morning she had turned gray, with thick clouds high in the sky, so she preferred to stay hidden between the sheets for as long as she could, with a restful sleep flooding every inch of her skin.

There was a knock on the door, causing her heart to collapse within a second. He listened carefully to make sure. They called a second time. Reluctantly, he ran up and put on his pants from the day before. He ran his hand through his hair, hoping he was more or less presentable. She stood right outside the door.

-Who? He growled, his voice lazy.

"Good morning," a male voice greeted cheerfully. I bring a package for Miss Angela.

She nodded reluctantly silently. He opened the door and came across a boy of a few years, with a smiling look and a cap.

"Good morning…" the young man whispered, being momentarily shocked by Angy's natural features. I bring a package for you. He pulled a small package out of his huge backpack. Here you go.

Surprised, Angy took the small package in her hands, which apparently had traveled a few kilometers.

"If you are kind enough to sign here," the boy said, pointing to the lower right corner of a page full of data.

"Sure." He took the pen the young man handed him and deftly scribbled his lines. Here you go.

-Thank you very much. Have a nice day.

"Yes," she whispered, not being overly convinced of it. The same I say.

He closed the door, the unidentified object still in his hand. He went to the kitchen and stared at the coffee pot with somewhat cloudy eyes. The tongue felt like rubber, and the stomach was urgently asking for something to fill it with, so for the moment the mysterious wrapped item would have to wait. I needed a shower to wake up completely and especially a good coffee.

The water released the first thoughts of the morning. The warmth of each droplet told him how pleasant that sensation was; it could have stayed in there all day, but it wasn't a valid option. He got out of the shower and dressed in loose, comfortable clothes, looking somewhat unkempt even in those early hours. When he returned to the kitchen again, he picked up the package and carried it into the living room, where he took a few minutes to rest on his comfortable sofa, blinking almost automatically, wanting to start on the right foot despite everything.

He ran his fingers down the brown paper wrapper — which curiously had no return address — tearing every fine inch of the material, hoping to stumble upon something worthwhile; one of those smiles I hadn't seen for a long time. When he finally discovered the contents of the small package, he was literally in the surprise of a lifetime. It broke into a thousand pieces, being broken and useless, useless. She was holding in her hands a small whitish object, worn around the edges, with light feathers still holding onto the central part… Angela fell to her knees to the ground, each of her nerve endings flashing and sending a violently deciphered message to the brain. She put her hands to her head, horrified, once more seized by her past. He understood that, one way or another, it was going to be impossible for him to escape from what one day was.

Night came unannounced, revealing a body suddenly weak, grayish, almost inert. The tears had not stopped rolling down his cheeks, flooding everything in their path: eyelids, eyelashes, nose, lips ... He felt like dying, visualizing the person directly responsible for that tragedy across the room. If he wanted to make her suffer, he was certainly succeeding, because she had already reached her own limit and her sanity refused to respond again, catapulting her into depths too painful even for her.
