Chapter 41: The Bloodied Shirt

Flora stood motionless for a few seconds as she tried to process what she was seeing in her hand. She pulled out the white sleeve from under the pile of colored clothes but did not expect to see a man’s white shirt with the whole front part covered in dried blood. She tried hard to explain to herself what she saw. Perhaps the man had cut himself, but to have that much blood could mean that the man could have died. Perhaps the man had helped someone else who got heavily injured and knowing that they were on an island, the poor victim could have bled to death. But that would still mean that someone had died. Chapter 42: Finished with the Laundry

Flora pulled her daughter towards her as she looked at Emil. Chapter 43: Flora and Eva Exchange Rooms

“So, you two are on first name basis now?” said Eva in a sarcastic tone. Emil had already left with the trolley after depositing Eva’s bags and the two women stood in the corridor with Nadi. They were standing in the corridor of the servants’ quarters and Eva was unlocking the door to her room. The keys jangled and she opened her door. “He did tell me his name when he stopped by the laundry room earlier,” replied Flora who also opened the door to her room. Chapter 44: Preparing Dinner

Eva led Flora and Nadi inside the anteroom to the kitchen and had Flora change her slippers with those that were provided in the open shelves. At first, Eva was undecided on Nadi’s footwear, but Flora suggested that she just stay at the anteroom and play with her doll. “Are you okay playing here, Nadi? Chapter 46: A Small Accident

Flora continued to watch the guest as he ate, all the time wondering who he was and what work he was doing in the mansion. He ate slowly, cutting his marinated pork with short strokes of his knife and chewing each morsel with the finesse of an aristocrat. Flora waited patiently but was soon feeling her weight in her legs as she tried to stay still beside Pablo. It was not long before she started to shift her body weight from one leg to the other and lifting the relaxed leg to relieve it of tiredness.Pablo soon noticed Flora occasionally swaying from side to side and frowned. “I just can’t believe she did that to me, that wretched woman!” Eva cried loudly as she placed her hands on her face. She sobbed uncontrollably and tears fell on her face that still had some traces of make-up. Flora tried to console her and tapped her back. “There…there... I too had my own share of horrible bosses, especially while I was working in Malen. Chapter 49: Getting Ready for Work

It was early morning when Flora woke up. She was not used to hearing the digital clock provided in the room when it issued its alarm at 3:30 in the morning and was surprised at its loud beeping. Immediately, she flicked on the bedside lamp and looked for the off button on the alarm clock. She sat up and dangled her legs out of the sheets as she coaxed her body to wake up. The bed had been soft and comfortable, and Flora was quite happy that even the servants’ rooms were provided such luxury, but somehow, she missed the coziness of her old bed in Cardena. It was small and the cushion had become harder, especially in areas where the cotton had clumped together, but it had afforded her restful nights.
