The Principal’s office was a small cozy one. He had made it that way because, according to him, big offices were not only inconvenient but also uncomfortable. He was seated on his mahogany cushion chair behind his moderate table. On his table were books and report sheets of all kinds, neatly arranged and stacked in an orderly manner. A stationery case and an office telephone had been kept on the left side of the table. Behind the Principal were two flags, one of the school, and the other of the country each placed on both sides of a huge framed picture of the Principal which was hung on the center of the wall. Two cushion chairs were in front of the Principal’s table. The chairs were of a lesser quality than the Principal’s own. A bookshelf full of books stood on the left side of the room and on the wall was a timetable of all various subjects offered in the different classes. On the right side was a map of the school and a roster, both pasted on the wall.&

The next day, Mr. Matthew woke up and checked the time on his bedside clock. It was 6am. He brushed his mouth and sprinkled some water on his face. He then wore his tracksuit and went down the stairs. He knocked on his mother’s room but there was no reply so he peered in. His mother was not in her room. He closed the door gently and went to the kitchen to check if his mother was there. There was no one there either. He turned around to go out but stopped when his eyes caught a small piece of paper pasted on the fridge. “That’s new,” he thought to himself and walked towards it to investigate. It was a note from his mother. “Gone out for my morning joggings. You stay home and clear your mind,” he read it aloud. He squeezed the paper and threw it in the dustbin which was beside the door. “Great! Mr. Matthew walked into the library shakily, looking back a few times. His mother and the other women peered in through the library’s big see-through glassy window, giving him thumbs-ups to reassure him and try to put his mind at ease. He shook his head mildly and walked on. The plan was simply laid out. He looked back one more time before finally walking over to the counter where the librarian sat. “Just sign in here, and here, oh and also here,” she said as she handed him a paper and a pen. He signed the document quickly and after waving her goodbye, walked towards the gigantic rows of bookshelves. The library had so many people coming to read in it that two documents had to be signed in order to make sure no book was stolen or misplaced. The first documented stated the time a person entered, with a statement that if the person signing mishandled the book in any way, they would pay a fine. Mr. Matthew finished with his meal and headed to the kitchen to get an extra helping. His mom had made extra today. He dished the wheat cereal to half of his bowl and then carried it back to the sofa. He preferred eating in the sitting room to his room because of the two gigantic fans situated in the sitting room that seemed to blow refreshing breeze everywhere in the large room. There was a knock at the door. He greeted her warmly and opened the door widely to let her in. Mr. Matthew fitted his car keys into his car hurriedly and started the engines. He drove out of the parking lot and started heading home.
