LOGIN(Elsa's POV)
We remain in the training grounds for almost an hour before Bellman comes back from his meeting with the political circle.
I know the results of the meeting will not be in my favour because those people hated me. Ever since I spoke up to them, they considered me rude and disrespectful. Only Samuel's dad might put in a good word for me. That I was sure of.
As soon as I spot him approaching the Grounds, I stand up and go after him. He unlocks his door and I follow behind him, closing the door behind me.
I turn around to find he isn't staring at me or sitting as I expected him to, he is at the little book shelf behind his black seat going through some hard covers, after what feels like an eternity of him fumbling around in his office which is not very large, comprising only of a huge table, his large seat, two other seats facing the huge table and a trash can. There is a door just beside the book shelf which I guess should be a toilet or some other weird room, if you consider how weird Bellman is.
"Petran!"
His harsh voice brings me back from my thoughts and I see now that he is seated with the forever angry mask of a face he carries around that always reminds me to not get into his bad books.
"Did you not hear what I said?" he says a little harsher this time.
"I am sorry sir. I- I didn't hear you sir," I say looking at his head.
Eden is right after all, his head is too big for his body.
"I thought as much....sit!" he says, giving me a stare like he wanted to purge my soul that very moment.
I take the seat closest to the door just in case he decides to hurt me or do something crazy, I needed to be closer to an exit just like Mamie had thought me so I could save Eden, she was so naive most of the time, yet so sweet, gentle and sw-
"If I remind you again to pay attention, your punishment would be multiplied," he says, coldly.
My mind had a funny way of distracting itself whenever I got myself in a very bad situation and right now it wasn't helping. As much as I try to stay focus, the fear of what my punishment could be keeps my mind away from even focusing on Bellman.
I clear my mind one more time and stare at him squeezing my hands together to pay attention to the sentence he was going to throw at me.
"The leaders have considered your good deeds and importance in the city but we have to be fair so the people would not turn against us." He pauses, looks at my shaky hands and smiles before continuing, "Ruth is already packing her things and preparing to leave Amazon has we speak, we can not continue to harbor people that break the law and remain unproductive only eating our food and drinking our water without a relevant contribution, can we?"
He continues going on and on about Ruth's punishment not realising it was making me sick, I have always known the political circle were up to something, they were responsible for all the missing people -somehow- I admit we got into a fight but that is not enough reason to banish her, only murder was a crime that deserved such punishment and even if I didn't know the girl well enough she was not a killer - everyone knew the consequences of that- the political circle were purposely reducing the population but why? I am sure the stuffs my team found was really helpful at least our food ration increased, even our neighbours were looking better than they did a couple of months ag-
"As for you Petran,"
His voice cuts my thoughts and brings me back to the conversation.
"Since you have proven yourself worthy, we can't banish you without earning a riot from the people. The circle have decided to send you on a solo mission if you succeed you can come back, if you don't.. you must never return," he says his eyes never leaving mine. I try to stay as calm as possible under his gaze. I didn't want to give him the pleasure of seeing how affected I was by his words.
"What am I suppose to bring back sir?" I ask, trying to sound brave, he stares at me with little glints of satisfaction flashing across his eyes then he opens a drawer under his table and throws a new face towel at me, I catch it thanks to my good reflex and stare back at him with confusion.
"Wipe the sweat off your forehead Petran, in this new world we live in it's survival of the fittest, someone has to die for another to live."
There is an evil grin dancing in his eyes, I have always known Bellman was creepy but this is just too much, I wipe the sweat off my face and I realise even my palms were sweaty I quickly wipe them and place the towel on the table pushing it slowly towards him.
"What is my mission?" I ask through my teeth.
"Don't be in a hurry to know, you will spoil the fun! Do you know how angry you made the leaders the day you saved all those pesky kids we wanted to get rid of?"
Now I confirmed it, Bellman was in this little conspiracy going on in the compounds. His intense glare makes me want to sink deeper into the chair but I don't want to give him that satisfaction I stare back at him holding my grounds.
Ever since the water mission a few months ago, most of the leaders even if I never really saw most of them were not happy with me for standing up against them and forcing them to let everyone they wanted to banish back into the city and Bellman was one of them, he gave us the hardest of missions and was always very strict and stern with us.
I shouldn't have gotten into a fight with this Ruth girl, damn her!
"I know you and your little friend have a secret you are hiding and this time, I am going to expose you!" he says, calmly getting up and signalling to me to do the same.
"The mission would be revealed to you tomorrow morning as soon as you leave the city gates not before, we don't want you girls to do your voodoo or whatever it is you do to succeed, have a nice day Petran." He opens the door and motions for me to leave.
"How?" I am dumbstruck! How can this even be possible? And if it is possible, this can save the city a lot of trouble. If it can be done on a larger scale, then a lot of people will have food."You will show this to the city officials right?" I ask getting excited."No," he replies looking sad."Why? Why not?" The pitch of my voice starts increasing due to anger."Why not? Why can't you show the officials? You are from compound three right? Isn't that suppose to be your specialty?" I fire at him my cheeks burning with rage.Compound three's duty is to experiment and work on technology which aids different activities in other compounds. Like the chemical compound two uses to treat water was designed by them. There are also builders who are sent there to learn new ways of reinforcing old structures or constructing new ones and so many other things.
The gods do not grant my wish because I still feel the wind change temperature from hot during the day when the sun was up and cold when the sun was down and night was fast approaching. It is the only thing that makes me keep count of the numbers of days I spend on the ground refusing to live.Refusing to open my eyes to a world without Elsa. The sun is beginning to set again and my body is just starting to give in to the earth when I feel vibrations on the ground. Someone is coming. Not long after, my thoughts are confirmed when I hear footsteps approach me but I keep still, trying to figure out what the intruder's next move will be or what they can possibly want from me.I hear more movements some where around me, like whoever it is, is trying to set up something. But I refuse to open my eyes. Or leave the ground.
"It is, you!" he stammers and moves a foot backward looking up at the podium."What have we done?!" he whispers to himself. Another crack is heard and he takes flight away from me."EDEN!" I break my concentration from Bellman who is still running like a ghost is after him and turn towards the caller.Mrs Spencer is on the podium floor with Elsa in her arms and tears in her eyes calling out to me. I get on my feet and run as fast as I can, eliminating the distance between us."I am sorry. I am so sorry. I tried reaching here as fast as I could but-" Her voice breaks and she resumes crying. My brain refuses to comprehend what she is trying to say to me. I slump down on my knees closer to Elsa and shake her awake."Elsa. It's over. We can leave now," I tell her in a tiny voice afraid
"ELSA!" I call out to her again. This time my voice comes out a little louder than a whisper. She is on her knees. Legs and hands tied with a rope so tight it is already bruising her skin. Her entire face is badly bruised. There is a purple splash of color on her left eye which is swollen and a cut across her lips with a trail of blood running from her hair down her jaw. Her clothes are torn in too many places for me to count. The sight of my Elsa in front of me, brings tears to my eyes and I try to get to her but the ever alert guards by my side hold me down. I scream and trash around but the hold they have on me is too strong. All the while Elsa keeps her one good eye on me. Her bashed lips seem to be moving but all I can hear is a constant ringing and my own heart beat. My protests cause everyone to turn their attention on me and I am forced to zone back into the situation.
I wake up slowly feeling sour all over. The idiot that brought me here must have dragged me all the way.I stand up and take a good look at my surrounding. Ignoring the horrible smell that kisses my nostrils.I am in a room with no bed, no chair, no window, just a bowl by the corner that certainly contains someone's wastes and a small bulb on the ceiling. The writings on the walls make no sense at all to me. I look in front of me and notice the iron bars, like the kind they use in a cell.I move to the bars and try to
His voice echoes in my ears and lingers on longer than necessary making me stand still; lost in my own thoughts. What sort of mission is this? How can they do this to Elsa? To us? All these questions keep going on in my head and it is starts to hurt because I am not even sure I could do it. Heck who am I kidding? I can not do something like that. I don't even think my so- called abilities are capable of something like that. I look and find Bellman smiling evilly at us and some of the guards mirror his look. Samuel who is by my side looks like he is deep in thought. His usually well combed dark hair was tousled pointing in weird angles, like he didn't even look at the mirror before stepping out of his house. Elsa on the other hand has a less worry face than any of us. She just stares on like a soldier planning their next line of action.
