"It is, you!" he stammers and moves a foot backward looking up at the podium.

"What have we done?!" he whispers to himself. Another crack is heard and he takes flight away from me.

"EDEN!"

I break my concentration from Bellman who is still running like a ghost is after him and turn towards the caller.

Mrs Spencer is on the podium floor with Elsa in her arms and tears in her eyes calling out to me. I get on my feet and run as fast as I can, eliminating the distance between us.

"I am sorry. I am so sorry. I tried reaching here as fast as I could but-" Her voice breaks and she resumes crying. My brain refuses to comprehend what she is trying to say to me. I slump down on my knees closer to Elsa and shake her awake.

"Elsa. It's over. We can leave now," I tell her in a tiny voice afraid if I speak too loud I might break from the inside out. But she does not move.

Aside the bruises all over her body, it almost looks like she is just sleeping. I refuse to accept the truth in front of me.

She can't be dead.

I can't be late.

"Hey!! Get up!!" I say louder than before. I take her away from Mrs Spencer's arms and I feel her cold body on mine, immediately my eyes resume shedding more tears.

"El please don't do this to me. I can't survive without you. Who is going to take care of me? Who would fight for me?Elsa please-" I cry.

"GRAB THEM!" I hear Silas scream from somewhere around the mess left behind by the earthquake I created earlier, interrupting my sobs and bringing me back to the inevitable truth.

I hear the sound of boots approach us and I raise my head, my eyes glowing a bright green light as I look around the perimeter of the podium at the guards heading towards it.

"You have to get out of here." Samuel's mother says to me while placing her arm on my shoulder.

"You have to get far- far away from here...please," she pleads but I only nod my head in response not sparing her a glance.

Placing Elsa's body on the podium floor, I stand on my feet all the while not removing my gaze from the perimeter around us. My actions make the guards to stop unsure of the next action to take. I hear Samuel's mother scurry away from Elsa, but I pay her no attention.

Suddenly large trees starts growing out of the cracks left by the earthquake, lifting everything on the ground around it unto their branches.

It lifts old machines abandoned on the open area and some guards that were not quick enough to leave the area, causing screams of pain and blood splatter from those that were unlucky to be met with the spiky parts of some of the erupting trees.

The massive growth continue until the entire open area in front of the administration building becomes covered up with trees.

I stretch my hands towards the body in front of my legs and a cocoon of vines erupts, lifting and wrapping her in it.

I direct my hands at the gates and the vines starts heading there with Elsa in it. I follow slowly behind it, trees erupting around us creating a sort of pathway. The guards at the gate run for their lives as soon as they see us approaching.

Strong vines grow from the ground and crawl on the gate causing it to collapse, creating an opening for us to step out.

I continue directing the cocoon as far away from the compound and the entire city as I can. I walk until I become exhausted from using my powers for too long.

When I am sure we are far enough, I collapse on my knees closing my eyes, the action releasing Elsa from the cocoon.

I crawl towards Elsa's body now on the ground and hug her to myself rocking her back and fort, trying to get as much of her as I can before I bury her.

Yes, I have accepted the truth. I was too late. Elsa is gone.

I cry thinking of everything that happened to me.

Thinking of my mother who died because of me.

I think of Mamie who also died because of me.

Now it was Elsa, who was everything to me, from a mother to a father I never had. Elsa was everything. Now she is gone. I had nothing.

I could not save her. After everything she did for me. I could not save her. I was too slow. I could not save her.

I cry till my eyes starts hurting.

I cry till there is no tears left to shed.

I cry till my voice is lost to the winds and no sound parts from my trembling lips.

I cry till the muscles in my body become too tense to move.

I cry till it becomes too painful to even breathe.

I failed her.

It feels like an entire century has passed when I finally get up and decide to bury her.

I select a good spot and place her into the belly of the earth. I cover it up with my own hands and grow a wild berry bush on it, remembering the smile on her face when I made Wild berries for her in our district just two days ago.

Left with no strength to express my grief I collapse and allow the darkness to envelop me wishing to never awake.

"How?" I am dumbstruck! How can this even be possible? And if it is possible, this can save the city a lot of trouble. If it can be done on a larger scale, then a lot of people will have food."You will show this to the city officials right?" I ask getting excited."No," he replies looking sad."Why? Why not?" The pitch of my voice starts increasing due to anger."Why not? Why can't you show the officials? You are from compound three right? Isn't that suppose to be your specialty?" I fire at him my cheeks burning with rage.Compound three's duty is to experiment and work on technology which aids different activities in other compounds. Like the chemical compound two uses to treat water was designed by them. There are also builders who are sent there to learn new ways of reinforcing old structures or constructing new ones and so many other things.

"ELSA!" I call out to her again. This time my voice comes out a little louder than a whisper. She is on her knees. Legs and hands tied with a rope so tight it is already bruising her skin. Her entire face is badly bruised. There is a purple splash of color on her left eye which is swollen and a cut across her lips with a trail of blood running from her hair down her jaw. Her clothes are torn in too many places for me to count. The sight of my Elsa in front of me, brings tears to my eyes and I try to get to her but the ever alert guards by my side hold me down. I scream and trash around but the hold they have on me is too strong. All the while Elsa keeps her one good eye on me. Her bashed lips seem to be moving but all I can hear is a constant ringing and my own heart beat. My protests cause everyone to turn their attention on me and I am forced to zone back into the situation.

  • GREEN   Chapter Eleven

I wake up slowly feeling sour all over. The idiot that brought me here must have dragged me all the way.I stand up and take a good look at my surrounding. Ignoring the horrible smell that kisses my nostrils.I am in a room with no bed, no chair, no window, just a bowl by the corner that certainly contains someone's wastes and a small bulb on the ceiling. The writings on the walls make no sense at all to me. I look in front of me and notice the iron bars, like the kind they use in a cell.I move to the bars and try to

  • GREEN   Chapter Ten

His voice echoes in my ears and lingers on longer than necessary making me stand still; lost in my own thoughts. What sort of mission is this? How can they do this to Elsa? To us? All these questions keep going on in my head and it is starts to hurt because I am not even sure I could do it. Heck who am I kidding? I can not do something like that. I don't even think my so- called abilities are capable of something like that. I look and find Bellman smiling evilly at us and some of the guards mirror his look. Samuel who is by my side looks like he is deep in thought. His usually well combed dark hair was tousled pointing in weird angles, like he didn't even look at the mirror before stepping out of his house. Elsa on the other hand has a less worry face than any of us. She just stares on like a soldier planning their next line of action.
