  • Orphan   Chapter 14: The first Flag

One by one, we all lined up again. I was in the centre. I didn't know why but somehow after the original shock I had made my way to the centre and at this stage, I was in the middle. I didn't know where Zac went, or the Augustus kid. Dylan, the tall and lanky kid that had tried to start something with the Teacher, was standing to my right. He didn't look good. Pale. Maybe it was from before, but surely someone with his height could do this race easy like a piece of cake."Lovely!""Are you ready?"Looking straight, I could see the buses like a shadow in the front, it was a blur, but I could make it out as there was nothing else blocking the way. "On

  • Orphan   Chapter 13 - The River of Dreams

"Boy and girls, I hope you've enjoyed the ride. We have arrived at the river of dreams!"Excited, I turned towards the windows and peaked outside. To the left were trees, but at the centre was acres and acres of soft grassy lawn that looked like it had just been mowed, a lake to its right and mountains at the far back. I had never seen so much greenery in my whole life, it looked so peaceful, I could lie there for days and have all the worries in the world disappear. "Zac, have you ever seen such greenery before?""No, never. Where I come from its all sand, dirt and rock.""Me too""I wonder w

  • Orphan   Chapter 12 - The Excursion

One by one we filed out from the great hallway and out the door, in front of us were three large white buses."Zac, the buses are massive. How many children can it fit?""Most likely all of us."Stepping inside, it smelt sweet, I was guided by a man to a seat at the end, the seat was comfortable. Sitting next to the window I watched as one by one we all boarded. "Zac, you need to sit!" Zac was bouncing from one seat to the other like a monkey jumping from tree to tree."It's so comfortable! The seats are so comfortable. I can't decide which one to sit on.""Just sit with me?""...Fine. But serio

  • Orphan   Chapter 11 – Liam

Jolting awake. My whole body was drenched from head to toe in icy cold water.Just what was the big idea?Shivering I lunged forward, looking for who had done it. Screaming at the top of my lungs. There were actually blocks of ice all over the bed.And standing alone, in a black vest with salt and pepper hair, and a massive smirk spreading across his face was a tiny old man.How did he even get into my room?"Don't look at me with those eyes. Wash up, get dressed, and come outside.""And just in case you wanted to know. I am Liam the

  • Orphan   Chapter 10 - The Great Hall

I had never seen anything like it, the room was so wide and spacious, it looked empty but at the same time, it felt rich and filled with wealth. The floor was padded with rich black and white porcelain, and dozens of children were skipping and running across its smooth surface. It reminded me of the orphanage so much. It felt as if I had not left at all. And at the centre of the hallway, stood a table with trays full of colourful fruits, pastries, and omelettes. There was even an enormous fountain of brown that was so tall it nearly touched the golden crystal-like ball that dangled on a thin long black metal rod, which stretched to the rooftops. As I raised my neck to follow it, I could see dozens of rooms, with black wooden frames, each level symmetric to the one below.

  • Orphan   Chapter 9 - The Academy

I must have slept for ages because when I opened my eyes, it was completely dark. The only light came from the car which didn't extend far at all.We were in the middle of nowhere, there was not a single soul. It was completely deserted. Surrounding us, no matter where I looked was mountains of sand. We were in a desert. "Oh, You're awake. We'll be there soon. You might not see it just yet but look over there, do you see it?"I must have been still half asleep, because it took a while before I managed to glimpse at what Giovanni was pointing to. In the distance, there was a like a small glimmer of light getting brighter as we drove closer.
