All that Edna knew about Mr Coker was his complacent behaviour because she had observed him for sometime now and the rift that grew between him and his wife as the day passed by. On Tuesday they had been an argument between the both of  them which had led Mr Coker to the choice of coming back home late at the middle of the night as he reeked of alcohol. It came as a shock to Edna when the quarrels increased and the cause of it was yet unknown to her but got her thinking.

Mrs Coker had left early that morning to the office to get some of the papers given to her by the secretary, the previous day to review. Much later in the day her boss had called upon her to be present in his office. On getting to his office she felt perturbed because the secretary and other members of the company had been informed about the retrenchment of some workers. She walked into his office feeling frightened a bit, as she sat down on the sofa chair. He handed a later over to her that was enclosed in a brown envelope.

It frustrated her to think of being sacked at this level of her career, it had been five years of hardwork and persistence. She tore the later open and read it's content at her office.

Slumping on her chair she felt unhappy by the contents of the letter as it was a letter of retrenchment. She was asked to leave the company's car and every other resources provided to her by the company. There she sat

looking bewildered and thinking of what next to do, her face turned gloomy as tears rolled down making a ruin out of her makeup. How was she going to start all over again in search of a job like old times, there was nothing to do now than to leave. Stacking up the papers properly the thought of her last encounter with an organization that her application was sent to but never gave her a feedback

even as days rolled by came into her mind. Then miraculously she was appointed to work, which became a wonderful thing in her life as she engrossed her energy to make sure that she kept targets and instructions.

"What could have gone wrong?"

The question hit her hard like a puzzle that needed to be fixed. Rain began to fall in torrents like heavy pebbles hitting buildings. It was time for the rains to come, and for the first time in a long time Mrs Coker wondered deeply in thoughts about the incessant quarrels between she and her husband, which made her feel sad and now she had lost her job.

Usually it calmed her spirit down to go home and get a good rest but right now it felt like a bad idea. Working in a company who paid the amount of money that she earned was hard to find. When Mrs Coker arrived home, the whole family was not yet back except for Edna. Mr Coker had stopped paying attention to the kids and her for sometime now which had started to look like a normalcy in the home.

She went into her room, the room was properly arranged as she walked to the window were her eyes could behold the well constructed tarred street. She thought of nothing right now as her body ached as a resultant effect of stress from work. Momentarily the thought of the fact that her children will soon be back from school was in her mind.

The next day came and Mr Coker insisted that he slept alone in the room which was strange but Mrs Coker ignored his actions to avoid a quarrel. She left him alone as he sunk in misery as his days were now becoming uneasy to him. He watched in dissatisfaction as he looked at himself in the mirror, he had thought the job was to be done smoothly without any mishap, he hoped in his heart that their would be no cause for alarm in other to avoid ruining his career. He had to establish a company of his own and he had dreamed for too long not to fulfill them now.

It had been six months since he was appointed to work in a company. Things were going quite smoothly then until one day he was called upon by Mr Johnson for a private meeting.

"The task is a simple one, there is nothing to be scared of, all you have to do is make sure that the drugs are  delivered immediately to the boys in shoel and you are expected to be back before dusk, make sure you meet me at my residence." He ended his statement confidently reassuring him that he was going to be fine. Mr Coker felt frightened as beads of perspiration ran down his forehead. His friend George tapped him softly as he tried to think clearly, he was still thinking when some well built men came into the office.

"They will go along with you," He said pointing at the hefty looking men.

"George will come along with you so don't be frightened." George guaranteed him as they walked out of the office that everything was going to be fine and he will be paid properly.

The saying that the "Devil comes as a pathway of light," can be literally seen as little did Mr Coker know that things were going to turn into a mess. They entered into an uncompleted building and the sound of buzzing flies hovering around rotten mangoes squashed on the ground was seen. But Mr Coker did not give any attention to all these things as he felt so concerned with the task he was indulging himself in. Mr Coker felt reassured that everything will be fine as George made the lead.

"Are you telling me, he has to be transferred to another hospital?" No amount of sympathy could erase the pain Mrs Coker felt at the moment. She turned to look at the nurses in the ward. After sometime she looked at the doctor and asked him what his health condition was at the moment."His chest area seems to be badly injured, and there will be a need to getting a surgical operation although the probability of his survival is low.""But don't worry ma, we would do our possible best to keep him alive, at the moment I have to make sure he is transferred to a better hospital were he can get a proper medical care."Mrs Coker began to feel bewildered as she questioned the unknown. The seasons for the rains had come and it seemed to Edna like the gate of heavens were open as rain fell down heavily. She heard a sound but could not detect immediately if it was her mind playing games with her or a reality. She recalled that she had seen a strange man at the kitchen during the weekend but the idea of telling Mrs Coker wasn't a pleasant one as she felt it was inappropriate considering the emotional turmoil she was experiencing. Cold shivers ran through her body as the thought of strange figures moving around the house scared her. A screeching sound came from the main entrance of the house which got her startled as it increased her curiosity."What if they were dangerous people at the door." She thought. It would be of great relief if someone could walk to the sitting room and observe were the sounds were coming from, but every member of the household seemed to be asleep except for her which even increased the tension she felt
