When Judi stood up, the clouds were covered by the dim stars. She made her way out of the church and trudged on to the street of Agor. She couldn’t go back home. They would probably be waiting for her... waiting to take her out and she was deeply hurt. Her wrist watch was already broken and the shards stuck on her hands. She took it out but she didn’t feel the pain. All she felt was the throbbing headache almost driving her crazy. She kept on going and dragging her feet towards the street of Agor. Many people stared at her as if she was probably another mad young lady that had been used up for ritual by her 419 boyfriend. When Judi got to the door, she didn’t know if she could trust this person. They were not really friends but that was all she had right now. She tapped on the door and the door opened.
“Oh my God, Judi!” Mara screamed and let her inside then set her on the sofa and brought her first aid kit “What the hell happened to you?”
“I need your help” that was all Judi could say “Can I trust you?”
Mara kept quiet but Judi pulled her hands so tight that it hurt her colleague “Can I trust you?” she asked again.
“Yes” she replied with a gaze that set her mind at peace.
“Thank you” Judi breathed with a sigh of relief.
Mara let her rest for a little while. She knew that whatever it was, Judi was in deep trouble and it may be something she didn’t want to be dragged into, but she was in it already. She was surprised to see Judi on her doorstep. They were just colleagues... nothing more...no personal phone calls or stuff and she was the only one that Judi could trust. She remembered the boss saying that if Judi showed up on any of their doorsteps that they should contact the police immediately as she was a national threat. But looking into her eyes, she didn’t look like the national threat. Infact, she looked scared and threatened. And she had made a promise to Judi that she could be trusted. She wouldn’t sell off her promise so easily.
“Hey Judi” Mara called softly as she pulled open her eyes “You have been out for a while. I made you something."
Judi pulled her bag close and pulled out her laptop “The damn thing won’t work!” she cried.
“Use mine” Mara offered bringing it to her “It must be urgent."
“Thank you” Judi feigned a smile then took the laptop and tapped her fingers. It read “the truth about Tuesday”. She kept on writing until all her palms were exhausted. It took hours but she wasn’t counting the time anymore. All that mattered was the truth and that it was out there for everyone to see. When she was done, she showed it to Mara “You can never tell anyone that you saw me or had anything to do with this."
Mara stared at the pages and her eyes flared. It was totally unbelievable.
When Judi clicked on Publish. She felt satisfied. The truth was out there for everyone to see right now. For the first time, she slept without wondering if anyone was going to break into the house and murder her.
When Judi opened her eyes, it was almost 11 noon. Mara had already gone off to work and had left some food and stuff for her. She smiled. It was a bright new day and she was still safe. That’s all that matters.
She turned on the television set and switched on to channels television. What she saw freaked her out and made the fear return to her veins. The police force had debunked the claim about Tuesday and released an official statement that he was murdered by another prisoner due to a clash.
What the fuck! Her phone buzzed then she clicked on the receiver. It was Mara and her voice sounded too terrified
“Judi can you hear me."
“Yes, loud and clear."
“Listen very well” Mara tone became more serious “They are searching all the houses of the employees of NTB. Get out of there right now” she kept calm then continued “Also, the boss is dead. They said it’s suicide but there’s something fishy about everything”, Mara dropped the call...
Judi immediately slipped into a pair of jeans and took her leather bag. A black sedan police car pulled up in front of the house with a low horn. It scared the hell out of Judi but then her hands felt something. She pulled it out. It was the rough paper Tuesday had given them. Makinde must have slipped it into her jeans the last time they had met. It was directions to where the evidence was hidden. Then she smiled...
