14. Y*u Like Deborah

'That makes things a lot easier.' She mumbled and he laughed.
'I don't want you in that way Deborah.'
'Clears things and bruises my ego.'
'I'll take it that you're not used to guys not wanting you?'
'Hell, yah.' She exclaimed and for the first time, relaxed.
'You get that sometimes. Although you still have the greater population on your side.' He mumbled as they overtook Kingsley.
'Well thank you. Any other way I can compensate you, I'd do that. This means a lot to me.'
He nodded and after a while asked.
'Why?'
'Why what?'
'Why do you work there?'
'I have to make ends meet. My parents are reckless, it's just me to fend for my siblings.'
'So you pay your school fees?'
'Yes.'
'Do you know how much you'd save if you change school?'
'A nice amount.'
'Yet you'd rather go through it all.'
'Yes Stephen. I'd rather go through it all. My parents aren't that poor, reckless is the word. They'd gamble out their money. Sometimes they're lucky, sometimes they aren't. They'd leave for days not caring if we've eaten. They put me in this school but I'm the one putting myself through it because I want to look my siblings in the eyes and make them believe that everything's alright. Even though I toil all day, I can afford a fancy school for them and myself. Plus I don't want people to know that things are difficult for me neither do I want my parents to know that they won as a result of their incompetence.'
'For once, you never spoke of yourself but everyone else, how they affect your life.'
'We grow to realise that they matter.'
'That's your choice, they don't.'
'Maybe, maybe not but you know how your younger sibling's eyes lit when you're back? The excitement that you got them something? Or how they'd brag to their friends that you're their hero? The pure adoration, the selfless and untainted love? Heck! They matter to me more than anything. I want David and Lucy to be proud of me.'
'Do you think they'll be proud to see you as a stripper?'
She froze, she was not aware that he also knew that.
'I know that too.'
She gulped and nodded.
'They may not be proud of me. I know they won't, the total disappointment is a pain I won't want to bear so I'll hide it from them. If by chance they still find out then I'll have to explain to them not to forgive me but to know that life isn't as rosy as it seems and we do somethings to survive. That's why I don't want you to say anything. I care a little about what the world thinks but I care what my siblings think.'
He nodded before stopping at the race start line.
'People shouldn't be judged for what they do to survive. Some of them might not seem right. However, I think the end should justify the means, and if I was your sibling, I'd be proud of you.'
'Wow.' She exhaled.
'Thank you.'
Kingsley glanced at Helen when Stephen overtook him.
'Do you think there's something going on with those two?'
'Why? Are you jealous?'
'Hell no.' He moved his shoulders in discomfort.
'Liar! You like Deborah.'
'No way.'
'Yes way! Just admit it.'
'I'm curious about her.'
'Why are you curious about her?' She smirked.
'You act like a snotty sister.'
'Oh, you aren't gonna evade my question. Why are you curious about her?'
'Can't a guy be curious about a girl again?'
'No. You're not curious about me.'
'Ahh, because it's all a platonic.'
'Keep mentioning that and I'll feel like the unattractive sister. At least you realised that what you feel for her isn't platonic.'
'I don't feel anything for her.'
'Oh look, Stephen would soon kiss her!'
He jerked before seeing them a distance and they were not even that close.
'What's your point?'
'That you like her.'
'I do? I don't---'
She raised her hand and silenced him.
'Before you choke on your pride you arrogant jerk, I just stated fact. If you find it handy then work on your approach.'
'How?'
'Find a common ground. Be patient with her but don't always. Deborah likes to be surprised.'
'You know I love you ehh?'
She chucked, hitting him as they stopped beside Stephen's car.
