Helen and Stephen stopped, seeing Deborah and Kingsley on the dance floor, in each others embrace. It was the most beautiful of sight, Helen could swear that it was the first time she had seen him at peace.

'Do you want to dance?' Stephen relunctantly asked.

'No. Not really.'

'I was hoping you'd say that.' He exhaled to her amusement.

'Why?'

'Because I can barely move my feet and I'd rather be doing other things.'

'Like?'

'What we were doing.'

'Stargazing?'

'That's pretty concized.'

'Then elaborate Mister.' Helen bumped her shoulder to his as they walked back to the quiet garden behind the swimming pool.

'I'd rather be watching you, watch the stars.'

'Uhhhmm.' She scratched her jawline.

'Won't that be boring?' She took a seat and he did.

'I thought you like stargazing?'

'Yes, I do. I meant, won't it boring for you?'

'What's boring?' He asked, making her to cock a brow.

'Staring at me?'

'No, the definition of boring.'

'Something that doesn't hold ones interest.'

'Does that answer your question?'

'No.'

'You hold my interest Helen.' He said matter of factly that she swallowed hard and stared at the sky.

'Then there's this gaze when something holds ones interest, when one sees something beautiful, you have it right now.'

'What's it?' She tried not to look at him but did from the corner of her eyes.

'The raised eyebrows, the dilated pupils and the absent smile. It sneaks in unawares. I like seeing it on your face, knowing that I have that exact look. You're beautiful Helen.'

'Thanks.'

Plenty words.

A player's always smooth.

Quite smooth that I almost believed him.

He would forget them soon.

She fought with herself, not to turn, not to look at him or get lost in his gaze. Obviously, he would not be looking.

It was a lie. He was staring at her just at he said. The absentness so overwhelming, it dumbfounded her. Then the smile closed in, forming a serious look. She tried hard not to fumble at the scrutiny, just as quick as it happened, his lips parted.

What he did with them and how they unconsciously drove her crazy.

The capturing gaze.

The curious yet laid back eyes.

The tempting lips.

Yet she remembered who he was, what he done and most especially, what happened with Hilda earlier on.

'I don't get you. One minute you say you're interested in me, the next you're with my friend. How do you expect me to believe you when you kiss random girls? I don't care about Hilda but I care about my friend. It doesn't get better. Nothing makes sense.' She paused.

'The friendship between you two, it's more than friendship I presume. A relationship suits, she wore your Jersey to the game then you asked me to give her and Kingsley some space. You're aware that he likes her then?'

He lifted his shoulders in a shrug and she continued.

'See? I don't even get you. How would you let your friend have the girl you want? Is it pure selflessnes? I'll be damned and she won't appreciate it. Or pity? You can't let a relationship sprout out of pity.'

A smile curved his lips to her surprise.

'Now you're smiling. Is this funny to you?'

He nodded and closed the remaining distance between them.

'It's fun watching the perplexity in your eyes, how you think so loud, the confusion you can't hide. It gives you a touch that is strangely alluring.'

'Oh Stephen,' She exhaled.

'I like it.'

'Would you clear me on this?'

'Okay. I'm no selfless man. If I want something, I'd never share. Not even pity can move me especially when it comes to what I desire.' His eyes laid on her lips, she bit it and drew away, rubbing her hands together.

'Cold?'

She nodded, not even finding her voice to speak. He removed his hoodie and placed it on her shoulders. His hands brushed against hers, oddly soothing as he rubbed palms together and enclosed them in his. She looked at him, the concentration, ease and simplicity in his acts had her tongue tied. Which was now a regular reaction of hers to him since he made it a habit to surprise her with everything he did.

'See the stars.' She pointed and he looked up to the sky.

'I'd like to think that they burn themselves out to illuminate our world but people would like to overlook that becauee they are beautiful, they stand out and they bring light to them irregardless.'

'Stars have scars too.' She mumbled.

He was no astronomer to understand the study of stars or if her conclusions were true yet he knew that she was talking about herself. They were simple metaphors she chose rather than any form of transparency.

'That doesn't make them less desirable.' He said after a while and her gaze lowered to his with her eyes twinkling and her lips parted.
