5. Fire For A Heart

'And where do you think you're coming from?'
'It's none of your business.' She retorted and he rose.
'What?'
'You heard me right. Leave me alone!'
His hand crossed her cheek, giving her a resounding slap that had her eyes rolling back to its socket.
She narrowed her eyes and stormed away.She hissed in her room, trying her best not to ram her fist into the wall. She was not a person to show anger. She sighed again, provoked by him, humanity and the fact that her phone was ringing. Glancing at the clock, it was half past seven and Christina was starting a conference call.
'What's up babes, what's good?' Deborah asked, snapping her makeup kit.
'Nothing much, just the usual.' Christina replied and Helen could swear that she just rolled her eyes.
'Mother's not back and probably won't be for the night.'
'And you Helen? I hear you say nothing.'
'The old man's grumpy as usual, spoilt my mood.' She did not want to go into details. Moreover, she was the friend who talked less about herself; knowing that her friends all had problems even though they tried to hide it.
'Sorry.' Christina replied and she chuckled.
They remained silent, lost in thoughts.'So I heard you took it out on Stephen, bet he didn't see it coming.'
Helen threw her head backwards, typical Debs to want more of the gist.
'Seriously, I feel bad it wasn't his fault.'
'Girl deep down that cold heart of yours, you know you don't.'
She shrugged, remembering that they could not see her.
'Whatever, maybe I'll apologize, maybe I won't.'
'Mmhmm?'
'What? I'm serious.' She grinned but the background noises she got from her friends did not say that they believed her.
'You know you should take it easy on Kingsley, he's human. Let's try to act more human when it comes to those hedonists.'
'Oh oh oh, don't get me started. They aren't worth my time especially Kingsley. He's full of himself.'
'So are you babe. Hasn't it occurred to you that it's why you hate his guts? It's not like they've actually wronged us.'
'I don't know what's gotten into you but I need my friend back.'
'So do I.' Christina meekly mumbled.
'And did I tell you Helen?'
'About?' She asked, contemplating if she should tell them that she went out with the guys.
'I walked in on a foaming Christina.'
'No you didn't! What happened?' She sat on her bed, folding her legs beneath her in enthusiasm.
'Don't you want to tell her Christy?'
Christina laughed.
'It's nothing, just Deborah being over dramatic.'
'Now I'm over dramatic?'
'You've always been sistha.' She concurred.
'Whatever, Miracle tried hitting on her.'
She remained silent, not that she was any surprised since he seemed to be sweet on her. Heck! he was sweet on everyone, maybe that explained his earlier moodiness.
'But she left him wanting more. She said he was formerly all over the place spitting his awesomeness.'
Helen hollered in laughter.
'Well, well, well, he better not come back with a heart for you.'
'That's if he has any but I trust my girl, she'll crush him.'
'You're just mean.' Christina chuckled.
'Plain mean and you probably have a seat in hell.'
'Oh God forbid! Don't say things like that. I'm just stating facts. Do you know how many hearts our sweet pretty face friend has broken?' She rhetorically asked.
'Miracle won't be any hard to deal with.' She snapped her makeup kit close.
'I got to go girls.'
Helen was silent for a while and she knew Christina was thinking the same thing as she. She was neither an extrovert nor an introvert, going out at night was not much of her thing yet she tried to understand that Deborah was doing all she could to make ends meet since she was not well to do like most of them averagely were. She was stuck with nonchalant parents who made it a duty to forget that they made a home of kids.
'Careful.' Christina mumbled.
'You should be careful.' Helen concurred.
'I always am. Moreover, I got a fire for a heart and I'm not scared of the dark.'
'Yeye pikin, don't be quoting one direction for us and get out of my phone.' Helen chuckled as they ended the call, hoping that Deborah's night jobs would not get her into trouble. She went through her shelves, picked out a random book since it was the beginning of the term and she did not have any homework, she slept off reading Divergent by Veronica Roth. One day, she would be free and dauntless enough to face her fears and confront her father but for the moment, she only had to dream.

Their dresses complimented their legs, tight enough to show some curves and vee necked to attract an eye or two. Helen study the environment in one quick glance. The hotel stood tall and elegant in the midst of other surrounding buildings. It was not shocking that her school mates could afford one of the most expensive hotels in Enugu.
