Chapter 1

King

Gray. Everything gray, thinks the little boy, who is looking up correctly for the first time. There are many people walking around him. Men carrying stones and tools. Women trying to sell vegetables and fruits. Children begging for money by singing or playing plays. But the little boy just stands there and looks around. He realizes that the sky is just gray, as it is every day. From a book his mother read to him before he went to sleep, it is said that the sky used to be purple. He looks up and tries to imagine a purple sky, but he can't. Eventually his eyes wander to the walls that keep people from getting outside. His father admonished him often enough not to climb over the wall. He said that whoever climbed over the wall would never be able to come back.

Exhausted, the little boy runs on looking for her. His auburn eyes, which can be seen under the dark circles under the eyes, search the crowd for her. He wonders where she is. Why did he leave her alone? Doesn't he like her anymore? Is she mad at him? His eyes get wet and his steps faster and faster. Running turns into running and worrying becomes panicking. What if she doesn't come back?

When he hears screeching and whimpering, he stops abruptly. The boy with the brown, somewhat longer hair and much too lean body holds his breath. He hears several noises. Sounds that give him goose bumps all over his body. Crying, screeching, whimpering, moaning, screaming. All the noise bounces off him. He can hear a whip drawn out, several times. Trembling, his feet carry him behind a dried, almost dead tree. He hides behind it like a protective shield. Terrible fear runs through his vein.

He sees so much, so many bad things. A man lies on the floor covered in blood, next to him five more. A woman kneels on her legs in front of one of the dead men. She screams and cries that he shouldn't leave her, while she sways back and forth worriedly. The whip the boy heard was held by a soldier wearing a helmet. He still strikes and strikes. When he sees the soldier beating a slightly older boy, he immediately feels sick. Since he hadn't eaten, the boy just choked air. He is cold and hot at the same time. Just as he looks back at the square, he recognizes a man sitting on a chair on a raised platform. The man is well dressed, wears a crown, and sits leisurely in his chair.

The boy will never forget the man's face. His chin is angular and he has a small beard. The cheekbones stand out especially on his face and his lips are curled up in a thin smile. But the reason the boy can't avert his gaze is because of the man's eyes. Dark, almost black, his eyes look down on the spectacle before him. He looks dangerous, terrifying, and his delight in the spectacle makes him look a little crazy.

So far, he doesn't understand why the little boy suddenly gets so angry. His hands clench into fists, he forgets the terrible lamentations and just looks at this man. He wants to jump on him, strangle him. But he knows that he has no chance. Suddenly, as if the man on the throne had sensed the boy's gaze, he looked him straight in the eye. Several seconds pass before the boy realizes that he is really looking at him, but neither of them moves. When the man's smile widens a bit, the boy turns and walks back as if nothing had happened.

At that very moment, the boy decides that he would find out who this man is. He swears he would get back at this cruel man for tormenting the poor men and the boy when he got older. Only after a few years does the boy, whose name is Mehmet, find out that the man is the king of the country.
