She was awoken by a bright light blinding her face. She shielded her face from the light with her palm and yawned. The atmosphere was calmer but it was even darker. She stood up stretching her limbs and massaging her ankles. Every room had their lights on now. Her head was throbbing but she was more aware of her environment now. It was 7.15pm. "Come in here and have supper with me, sassy doll" She heard him say."You have to eat you know, to be strong" he said coming out of the room towards her with a plate of fat chicken in his hands and a glass of milk. The chicken had a putrid smell and Juana was sure the milk was stale too. He squatted before her, dropping the meal and she realized that he had been drinking. Baron stared at the road. It was still dark but he could see a figure running towards him. His mind flashed back to the previous night, it had been hell for him. He had left home in frantic search of his daughter and had returned home without her. Juana and her family got home and she was still pondering on where Ella lived with her grandmother and brother."One day I'll find out by myself" she thought. That will be an adventure for her, but she had to be careful, she knew. Her last adventure had almost cost her her life. It was wrong to test or tempt God, it was one thing her mom did say. Afternoon was busy. Granny was cleaning the living room and hallway, and Juana was doing the dishes and taking care of the kitchen. Baron was wiping dust off the furniture and laying out dirty clothes. He carefully arranged them into the washing machine. Juana watched him from the kitchen. He looked moody. He had been quiet throughout the drive home, and even when granny referred to the Bishop's sermon in her discussion while coming home, he only nodded and faced the road. She felt bad for him. Juana began to spend a lot of time with her three friends-Ivy, Alicia and Ella. It was a new beginning for her. Her life was not complete, she knew that because she still got bullied, she still had asthma, she still froze from the memory of her odyssey at the hebephile's on Meadow street, she still worried for granny's failing health and she still missed her mom, but she was better. She was grateful for the little things. She was grateful to God for sending her friends back. There were still nights she'd cry herself to sleep and pray to God to bring back her mom but in the mornings, she cheered up. The nightmares have begun to appear less frequently but they still came, and frightened her. Dad still shouted at her one time, and apologized at another time. It was the usual routine ever since Dawn disappeared. Granny was in the hospital. She has a problem with her heart, so the doctor said. It worried Juana. She didn't want her granny to die. She was too worried to confide in her dad.

"Hi mom" "Hop in Juan" he said quickly. Colin. It was one of those days he came to drive Juana home with Baron's wife's car. After school in the afternoons. When Juana realized in the beginning that she'd be driving home with Colin in her mother's car for the next God-knows-how-long school period, she felt sick in the stomach. It reminded her of mom. The car still smelled like her.For few seconds, it made her feel good and she'd even forget sometimes that mom was not the one at the steering driving her home. But it mostly made her sick. She didn't show it however, to Baron. She didn't want to be too much of a bother to him. He was carrying enough weight on his shoulders already.
