CHAPTER 5: My Boyfriend

After the talk with my mother I decided to prepare because I realized that my work shouldn’t be affected by my personal problems. I came to the office feeling very tired because I wasn’t able to sleep last night. I wanted to take a time off from work but I thought that I need to be busy so that I can forget about him. I’ll think of work as a distraction from the situation I am in.

It was around five in the afternoon when Fatima, my assistant, went in to my office.

“Excuse me, maam?” she said.

“Yes?” I asked her.

“Someone wants to see you.” She said.

“Who?” I said.

“He says that you know him. Mr. Kyle Martinez?” she said.

What the hell is he doing in here? I couldn’t believe he could not get the hints and still came here. Well, I should probably end this the right way once and for all just like what my mom said. The sooner I deal with this then the sooner this will be over.

“Let him in.” I told her.

I composed myself and retouched a little bit so it won’t be noticed that I cried last night. Seconds later Kyle came in with a box of what I think are cupcakes. On normal days, I would say that he’s so sweet but not today. I won’t fall for his lying tricks. He went in and I gestured for him to take a seat. I tried to be as formal as possible. He was looking at me but I couldn’t dare look at him. It will just remind me of what I saw at the restaurant.

“Why are you here?” I asked him.

“I… just wanted to check on you. You weren’t replying to my texts or even to my emails.” He said.

“As you can see, I’m very busy. I didn’t have the time.” I answered as cold as I could.

“I’m sorry I just thought that something happened.” He said sounding so hesitant.

Yes Kyle, something happened. You should feel uneasy. You are a cheater after all.

“Is that it?” I asked him.

“Yes. Wait, do we have a problem?” he said.

“NO, no we don’t have.”

I said.

I stood up and opened the door for him. He stood up and went near me.

“Can you tell me what our problem is? What’s bothering you? I’m so confused, Cass. We were okay the last time we talked and saw each other.” He said.

“I don’t know. You tell me what’s wrong then.” I bravely answered.

“What?” He asked.

“If you can’t be completely honest with me, then we should just forget that we know each other.” I said.

“What are you talking about? I don’t understand.” He said.

This guy really knows how to lie huh. I couldn’t accept that I fell right into his trap.

I cried due to the frustrations that I am feeling. I cried. He hugged me but I pushed him.

“Hey, tell me. What is it? Why are you crying? Please, what’s wrong?” He asked me and he looked so torn.

“Just… stay away from me, Kyle.” I said. “Just stay out of my life, please.”

“Why? Can you tell me what’s wrong?” he said.

“I don’t want to be a mistress.” I said as a matter of fact.

“What are you talking about? What mistress? And I can’t stay away from you. I can’t do that. I don’t know how to live without you anymore.” He said.

“I saw you! I saw you yesterday. Don’t you dare deny it! You were with your family. You even have a child! Why, Kyle?” I said as tears were falling down my cheeks.

“What child are you talking about?” he asked.

“Your child! How could you do this to me? How could you?” I shouted at him.

“This is just a misunderstanding. I don’t have a child, Cassy.” he said.

“Then can you explain what I saw yesterday?” I said. “I saw you in a restaurant yesterday together with a woman and a child. A child who looks just like you Kyle.

“I was with my sister in law and nephew yesterday. Maybe, that’s what you saw.” he said.

“What? Your sister in law? Nephew?” I said.

“Yes! I was with them yesterday. It was my nephew who wanted to see me so I treated them out.” He said.

I don’t know what I felt. It was a mixture of emotions. I felt relieve knowing that he has no child but I felt ashamed of how I acted earlier. I sounded like a jealous girlfriend. Oh my God.

“This is just a misunderstanding. Please, stop crying already.” He said as he wiped some tears off of my face.

“I will never do that to you. I promise you.”

“I’m sorry. I’m really sorry I shouted at you. I really thought you were a married man and that you were cheating on me.” I said.

“It’s alright. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to tell you that yesterday.” He said. “I was so occupied with my nephew that I didn’t had the chance to tell you.”

“So you really don’t have a child?” I asked once again.

“No. Unless, you want to be pregnant now then I would love to have a child already.” He said.

“Whaaaat?” I said as I slapped his shoulder.

“Just kidding. I mean if you’ll marry me then I want to have a child then.” He said.

“You’re making fun of me. Stop it.” I said.

“I’m not. I’m serious. Maybe, soon.” He said as if he was talking to himself.

“You’re crazy.” I said.

“Are we okay now? Do you believe me? Or do you want to meet my nephew and sister in law?” he asked me.

“I believe you already there’s no need to do that.” I said.

He laughed and then pulled me in for a hug.     

“I want us to be official, Cass.” He said as he held my hand.

He wants us to be official? I didn’t expect this to happen today.

“I want you to be my girlfriend. So, Cassandra Villareal, Will you be my girlfriend?” he said as he kissed my hand.

I was so shocked with what he just did. I never thought that he really is serious about us. His gesture only made me cry harder.

“Should I be worried that you’re crying?” He said.

“I’m sorry. This is so sudden I thought you’d never ask.” I said.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you but I want it to be perfect and not like this.” He laughed. “Not like this when you’re crying and all.”

“I’m sorry. I just thought that all this time you were lying to me. How would I know? You didn’t tell me about you meeting your nephew yesterday.” I said.

“It’s okay. I totally understand why you’re feeling that way. We don’t really completely know each other but I swear I won’t lie to you or worst make you my mistress.” He said. “So will you please be my girl?”

                “Yes! Yes, I am more than willing to be your girlfriend.” I said. “

     I hugged him as tight as I could and he did the same. This day turned out to be one of the best days of my life. Finally! He just made us official. We ended the hug and I was caught off guard when he suddenly kissed me on my lips. It was a soft and quick kiss.

“I love you and for the record, you are not my mistress.” He said. “You will never be.”

I rested my head on his chest and just felt in the moment. This is what I’ve been waiting for.
