**Atlas**

I stood up to look out of the small parlour window. It looked out onto the market place of the village. I reflected again what a dingy place it really was. All of the buildings looked like they were in various states of disrepair. Everyone that roamed the streets look miserable. The only people that looked like they might have money were clearly traders. If she really was a hybrid, it would be the last place I would think she would be.

I heard footsteps approaching so I turned and watched the door open. Gurtar came in followed by…my breath hitched. The girl had dark curly auburn hair that was messily pulled back. She was dressed in literal rags, and her face was dirty and pale. She was clearly underweight and looked fragile. Despite this, she was the most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. A strange feeling stirred within me. I had never felt like this before. My wolf made a desperate cry inside of me, and I knew he wanted her. I wanted her. Fuck. She was my mate. For a moment I just stood there looking and saying nothing. I was speechless. Her large hazel eyes were looking into mine with a mixture of fear and confusion. I knew that the pendant I was wearing was working, she didn’t recognise me as hers.

Gurtar’s voice cut into my daze. “Yes, not quite what you were expecting I’m sure! Right scruffy little runt that she is!” Anger surged through me. My wolf wanted to pin her to the floor and tear her to shreds for insulting our mate. “Leave us” I growled at Gurtar. Now Gurtar looked fearful, she shot a hateful look towards the girl and left without saying another word.

I took a breath and tried to regain my composure. I could see the girl was frightened. I smiled warmly at her. “Please don’t be afraid, I promise I am not here to harm you in any way”. She nodded but remained silent. “Er please sit…if you would like?” I motioned towards the chair that Gurtar had sat in. The girl moved slowly to the chair and sat down. I noticed she didn’t relax into the back of the chair. I took the seat opposite. “My name is Atlas, can I ask what yours is?” The girl cleared her throat a little “Thea, Sir” she replied quietly. She wasn’t looking at me now, instead choosing to keep her head low. “Please, call me Atlas” I tried to say as reassuringly as possible. How the hell was I going to broach this. She was my mate, so surely that meant she must be supernatural in some way? But did she know? Did she even know what a werewolf was? Or a vampire or a mage? She remained silent so I continued.

“Thea, this is going to sound very strange, but my master and I have been looking for you…we have been looking for you because we believe you can help us, and our people”. She looked up. “I’m sorry but…I don’t even know who you are. How I could help you?” Her eyes darted back to her lap “I am only a servant here”. I paused. I wish I’d thought up a bloody script or something beforehand. “Thea, we don’t think you’re just a servant. We think you might be much more important.” She didn’t look convinced.

“My people, we’re different…special you might say” I racked my brain trying to find the words that weren’t lies but didn’t make her think I was mad. “…we believe you may share some of our, abilities”. She was curious now “What kind of abilities?” I couldn’t tell if she was genuinely clueless, or trying to work out if I was trustworthy. “Well, it would probably be best if I showed…” I suddenly spotted a familiar looking piece of braid around her neck. Without thinking I moved towards her to look more closely. She immediately backed away from me, and her eyes grew wide. I silently cursed myself for being so stupid and retreated. Only a few days ago, someone had tried to touch and here I was lunging towards her. Although I was dying to touch her, I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you. I just was curious as to what you were wearing round your neck”. She placed her hand below her throat. “It’s nothing, just something that I was left with”. The sadness and pain in her voice was evident, and it was if her hurt became mine. “Thea, can you tell me about how you came to be here? Is Gurtar a relation of yours? She doesn’t seem to treat you very well?” I realised words were spilling out of me quicker than I meant, and I felt flustered. Flustered. That is never a word I would have associated with myself. This mate thing was turning me into an idiot.

Thea scoffed, and I looked up, surprised at her showing any emotion that wasn’t fear. She quickly regained composure. “Sorry, I was just laughing at the idea of Gurtar being a relation. I hope she isn’t.” She paused. “I don’t remember coming here or why I was left. Gurtar said she found me hiding in the stables with only my clothes and this…” She motioned to her neck, and then as if deciding to show me an ounce of trust, pulled out the necklace. It was almost identical to the one hanging around my own neck. I briefly toyed with the idea of showing her my own, but decided I didn’t want to make up a lie as to why I had it. “I see, and does it…does it do anything?”. She looked completely confused. “Do anything? What would it do?”. “Never mind…” I smiled not knowing what else to say.

I decided that she wasn’t acting naively, she genuinely didn’t know what I was talking about. There was more to her story than both of us knew. I needed to try and persuade her to come with me. I tried not to think about what would happen then. Watching my mate get married to my Alpha and close friend. Watching her belly grow round with his child… No. I couldn’t think about this. I buried those thoughts deep inside and looked at her beautiful face. How could I have underestimated the mate bond so much.

“Thea, I know this must be scary and confusing, and you have no reason to trust me, but I would like you to come back with me” She didn’t say anything, so I tried to reassure her further. “It isn’t a long journey, less than a day’s ride depending on how many stops we make. I will buy you a horse to travel on”. Still she said nothing, and I felt sure she was going to refuse. “There is a problem”. “Tell me?” “I can’t ride.” I smiled. “Then you shall ride with me on my horse, if you feel comfortable to do so”. She bit her lip as if considering her next question. “Where you come from…the abilities you mentioned…would you be able to help if I had some of these abilities myself”. “I would go as far to say Thea, that we would be the best help you could get, if that is the case” Another long silence. I watched her rub her hands uncomfortably. I held my breath in anticipation. Then she said the words I wasn’t expecting to hear. “When do we leave?”

**Thea**I had never been in a place this grand. In fact, I had never been anywhere you could have called grand at all. The castle was magnificent, so magnificent, for a brief moment I forgot why I was here. Not that I really knew that anyway.I couldn’t believe how big it was. When we had arrived outside its size had intimidated me. I had not wanted to leave Atlas. I’d expected him to show me to my room. Although I acknowledged it was much more appropriate for another woman to do this. Bessie did seem lovely. She was a stunning woman, without a doubt the most beautiful I had ever seen. She had blonde hair that was elaborately braided with ribbons. It was as long as the entire length of her back. Her eyes were green with flecks of gold, and they shone whenever she smiled. Her womanly figure was clad in a pale green dress that was fastened at the back with pearls. It nipped her in at the waist, the floor

**Atlas**The castle came into view, I heard her gasp. I realised it was probably the biggest structure she’d ever seen in her life. I sensed awe but also a small amount of apprehension in the way she gazed up, her mouth parted slightly. As she marvelled at my home, I marvelled yet again at her beauty.Conflicting emotions began battling in my head. On one hand, the journey had been torturous. Being so close to her, her back occasionally falling onto me, my hands grazing her thighs as I steered the horse, her scent filling my nose…It was almost impossible to resist her. On the other hand, I knew that this journey was the closest I was ever going to get to her. Soon we would be separated and I would never have a reason to touch her again. My wolf was furious with me.We had arrived around dawn, having not slept at all since I had left

**Thea**“Now!? You’re leaving NOW?!” Gurtar was furious. “It’s almost nightfall! Do you know how indecent it is to leave with a strange man at this time of day?” “I don’t think that is any longer you concern” I said, braver than I had ever spoken to her in the past. “You cheeky ungrateful cow!” Gurtar spat at me. “After all I’ve done for you”. She smacked the edge of the bar loudly, and the few patrons that were in tonight looked up in interest at our public display “Do you know how much coin I’ve been offered by various people to fuck you? I would be a rich woman by now. But I saved you from that life!” “Gurtar, I cannot deny, you took me in when others would have left me to die. But you never showed me love, if you had, I would have shown you it back”. She looked taken

**Jarin**I walked out of the castle gates followed by Asher and Doran. The rest of the pack would stay and protect the castle, in case it was a trap to draw me out and attack. We stood at the edge of the trees and removed our clothes, stuffing them into the packs that Asher and Doran would carry in their mouths after we shifted. If we were going to talk with the vampires, we needed to be in our human form. Once we were ready, I nodded in Asher and Doran’s direction to signal them to shift. The familiar pain surged through my body. It was strange. It hurt every time we shifted, but the pain almost became like an old friend. It was reassuring. Asher and Doran collected the packs, and I started running in the direction of the Eastern Outpost. This was the closest place to where our territories met. Some years ago, it was further away, and the werewolves occupied more land. However, with our

I hated horses. Not only did they smell, they were also a lot slower than me in my wolf form. We didn’t keep many of them, as they were hardly ever used. However, on rare occasions when we needed to stay human, they were the best option for travel. My wolf wasn’t happy that I wasn’t letting him out, but I didn’t have a choice. I clumsily saddled the black stallion. He almost appeared to be looking at me with the same apprehension I felt. I checked the packs, enough food for two people for a couple of days, supplies for the horse and some blankets. I sighed at the sword inside its sheath on my hip. If I wasn’t able to shift, it would be my only protection for the duration of my journey. I wasn’t a bad swordsman- it was a skill we practiced despite being able to deliver more damage in our wolf form. However, I still hoped there would not be a need to use it. I took a breath and reminded myself why I was doing this, and pulled mysel
