I walked out of the castle gates followed by Asher and Doran. The rest of the pack would stay and protect the castle, in case it was a trap to draw me out and attack. We stood at the edge of the trees and removed our clothes, stuffing them into the packs that Asher and Doran would carry in their mouths after we shifted. If we were going to talk with the vampires, we needed to be in our human form. Once we were ready, I nodded in Asher and Doran’s direction to signal them to shift.
The familiar pain surged through my body. It was strange. It hurt every time we shifted, but the pain almost became like an old friend. It was reassuring. Asher and Doran collected the packs, and I started running in the direction of the Eastern Outpost. This was the closest place to where our territories met. Some years ago, it was further away, and the werewolves occupied more land. However, with our own decline, came a decline in territory. We had come out of the other side of the forest now. The land was open but was rocky and mountainous. Asher sent a message to me as we ran “Alpha, where do you want to stop in order to shift”. “Over that next ridge. The outpost is only a short walk from there”. We came to where I had pointed out. Asher and Doran dropped the packs, and we simultaneously shifted back into our human form. We hurriedly got dressed, and placed the packs under a boulder to hold them down for when we returned. Well let’s hope there’s a return, I thought to myself. We’d bought loose fitting clothes so that if we needed to shift suddenly, there was less restriction. “I know it goes without saying, but stay alert. Fuck knows what they want” I said, slightly exasperated. They were the reason I wasn’t able to go and find the potential future Luna. “Alpha, what if it is an attack?” Asher asked. I really hoped not. “Then just kill as many of the bastards as you can” They both gave a wry smile. “I think we can manage that” Doran grinned.
We walked out from behind the ridge. Despite the darkness, I could see figures standing at the outpost structure. As we moved closer, I could see the familiar black velvet cloaks. Only the ones in positions of power wore these. Us werewolves always looked a little dowdy compared to the impeccably dressed blood suckers. Although, our clothes were ripped a lot more often so it was impractical to be dressed up all the time.
I could see the Elder standing at the front. His name was Giovanni. He was old, at a guess 800 or so years. Yet, he somehow managed to look youthful, with mere fine lines resting on his face. His hair was brilliant white, and his eyes were so dark that it was difficult to tell where his iris and pupil met. His skin of course was almost as white as his hair, but this was a trait shared by all vampires. He was the only person with their hood down. The other two that stood behind him bowed their hooded heads forward, making it impossible to identify who there were. We stopped a few paces before them. Giovanni gave me a snake like smile “Thank you so much for accepting my invitation Jarin” I laughed coldly. “It was more of an ultimatum than an invitation” I commented. “Still, it’s nice to know we can meet without trying to kill each other” ‘yet’ I thought to myself. “Yes it’s lovely, but if you would be so kind as to enlighten me as to why we are standing here, I would be most grateful”. Giovanni regarded me for a minute “Of course” he took a breath “It has come to our attention that you consulted a seer on the subject of your unfortunate species decline” his words were laced with amusement. I had to use all my strength to stop my wolf from taking over. He knew the vampire attacks were contributing heavily to our ‘decline’. The corner of Giovanni’s mouth was twitching upwards. He was enjoying this. To attempt to give him no further satisfaction, I asked calmly. “How did you find out about the seer?” “Well, I can’t go revealing all my tricks, but we all know seers are only loyal to themselves. They will divulge anything if given the right price”. I hated to agree with him, but he was right. “I assume then, that you know the details of that meeting?” “Of course, which is partly why I was interested to see if you would turn up tonight. I knew how busy you would be trying to find this hybrid”. “I think you’re fully aware our warriors would struggle to withstand another attack from you at this time. You gave me no choice”. He chuckled. “My dear Jarin, we always have a choice.” I remained silent. His eyes flicked to either side of me where Doran and Asher stood. “I notice your main mutt of choice isn’t with you this evening, I deduce from that he has been entrusted with the task”. My wolf was really struggling now and I knew the safest thing I could do was keep my mouth shut. I could feel the rage emanating from Doran and Asher. “I’ll take your silence as confirmation of my assumption, and get to the point of this meeting.” I tensed. “I believe what the seer said is true, as you do. If your plan comes to fruition then you will regain your power and potentially present a threat to me. I’m not foolish. I propose that we form an alliance of sorts”. I couldn’t help but laugh. “An alliance?! Since I’ve been Alpha you’ve done nothing but kill my warriors and take our land. Why would we form an alliance with you?” “You are right, but you appear to be forgetting about our common enemy” I narrowed my eyes. “The mages” “Yes. They are more powerful than either of our kind. If we joined forces as we are, we wouldn’t have any hope of defeating them. However, once you have this hybrid and produce children, who knows what we could be capable of.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. As far as I was aware there had never been an alliance between vampires and werewolves. “You do realise that our power could take years to reform. While we’re waiting for this to happen are you still going to continue to attack us?” Giovanni grinned, bearing his fangs. “If you hadn’t noticed Jarin I am quite old, waiting years isn’t a problem. Especially if it means we have a chance of overcoming the mages. Of course, in the meantime, our attacks would cease”. Too many thoughts were running through my head. “How can I know I can trust you?” “Ah, yes well I anticipated that question... I suggest we enter into a blood contract witnessed by the full moon. You know my people and I aren’t able to break those”. I concealed my surprise. Blood contracts were where two parties made an agreement, and pledged this agreement by signing each of their names in a mixture of their blood. The vampires power came from blood, which is why they could not break their oath. By signing this in the light of a full moon, where my power was drawn, I would be equally bound. “Tomorrow is a full moon” I stated. “Yes, this is why I insisted our meeting was tonight. You therefore have until tomorrow night to decide what you wish to do. If you agree, we will meet here again”.“Well Giovanni, you’ve certainly given me a lot to discuss with my pack” I began to turn. “Just a moment Jarin”. He kept his eyes on me but raised his left hand “Viola”. The figure on his left moved forwards, removing their hood in the process. It was a woman. She had long hair the same colour hair as Giovanni, but instead of dark eyes they were bright green, almost the colour of a lime. Her face was expressionless, but something in me stirred as our eyes met. I felt ridiculous. I wasn’t attracted to this thing, I refused to be. But even my wolf was restless with what I tried to pretend wasn’t desire. I snapped my thoughts back; Giovanni was looking at me curiously. “This is my daughter Viola, she is one of our most competent warriors. One of my conditions to our proposed alliance is that we form a council. The members will be made equally of vampires and werewolves. Viola will head our side. I suggest you choose someone to lead yours. The council will concern itself with threats from the mages and how we move forward in unison”. I kept my eyes on Giovanni, not trusting myself to look in the direction of Viola again. I nodded and signalled for Asher and Doran to follow me back to the ridge. My head was swimming with a thousand thoughts and feelings. I needed to talk this through with Atlas, and I needed to figure out why I was suddenly drawn to a fucking vampire.
**Thea**I had never been in a place this grand. In fact, I had never been anywhere you could have called grand at all. The castle was magnificent, so magnificent, for a brief moment I forgot why I was here. Not that I really knew that anyway.I couldn’t believe how big it was. When we had arrived outside its size had intimidated me. I had not wanted to leave Atlas. I’d expected him to show me to my room. Although I acknowledged it was much more appropriate for another woman to do this. Bessie did seem lovely. She was a stunning woman, without a doubt the most beautiful I had ever seen. She had blonde hair that was elaborately braided with ribbons. It was as long as the entire length of her back. Her eyes were green with flecks of gold, and they shone whenever she smiled. Her womanly figure was clad in a pale green dress that was fastened at the back with pearls. It nipped her in at the waist, the floor
**Atlas**The castle came into view, I heard her gasp. I realised it was probably the biggest structure she’d ever seen in her life. I sensed awe but also a small amount of apprehension in the way she gazed up, her mouth parted slightly. As she marvelled at my home, I marvelled yet again at her beauty.Conflicting emotions began battling in my head. On one hand, the journey had been torturous. Being so close to her, her back occasionally falling onto me, my hands grazing her thighs as I steered the horse, her scent filling my nose…It was almost impossible to resist her. On the other hand, I knew that this journey was the closest I was ever going to get to her. Soon we would be separated and I would never have a reason to touch her again. My wolf was furious with me.We had arrived around dawn, having not slept at all since I had left
**Thea**“Now!? You’re leaving NOW?!” Gurtar was furious. “It’s almost nightfall! Do you know how indecent it is to leave with a strange man at this time of day?” “I don’t think that is any longer you concern” I said, braver than I had ever spoken to her in the past. “You cheeky ungrateful cow!” Gurtar spat at me. “After all I’ve done for you”. She smacked the edge of the bar loudly, and the few patrons that were in tonight looked up in interest at our public display “Do you know how much coin I’ve been offered by various people to fuck you? I would be a rich woman by now. But I saved you from that life!” “Gurtar, I cannot deny, you took me in when others would have left me to die. But you never showed me love, if you had, I would have shown you it back”. She looked taken
**Atlas**I stood up to look out of the small parlour window. It looked out onto the market place of the village. I reflected again what a dingy place it really was. All of the buildings looked like they were in various states of disrepair. Everyone that roamed the streets look miserable. The only people that looked like they might have money were clearly traders. If she really was a hybrid, it would be the last place I would think she would be.I heard footsteps approaching so I turned and watched the door open. Gurtar came in followed by…my breath hitched. The girl had dark curly auburn hair that was messily pulled back. She was dressed in literal rags, and her face was dirty and pale. She was clearly underweight and looked fragile. Despite this, she was the most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. A strange feeling stirred within me. I had never felt like this before. My wolf made a desperate cry insi

I hated horses. Not only did they smell, they were also a lot slower than me in my wolf form. We didn’t keep many of them, as they were hardly ever used. However, on rare occasions when we needed to stay human, they were the best option for travel. My wolf wasn’t happy that I wasn’t letting him out, but I didn’t have a choice. I clumsily saddled the black stallion. He almost appeared to be looking at me with the same apprehension I felt. I checked the packs, enough food for two people for a couple of days, supplies for the horse and some blankets. I sighed at the sword inside its sheath on my hip. If I wasn’t able to shift, it would be my only protection for the duration of my journey. I wasn’t a bad swordsman- it was a skill we practiced despite being able to deliver more damage in our wolf form. However, I still hoped there would not be a need to use it. I took a breath and reminded myself why I was doing this, and pulled mysel
