Judi ran into the open office and he could hear the voices of some men ordering her to stop in the name of the law. She just couldn’t stop. Not today, not right now. She was pleased that she was wearing her white canvas which made it easy for her to sprint through. She grabbed her purse and without a word dazed through the stairs. The shot came really close to her ears and she screamed. She screamed so loud but she didn’t stop running. Not even fear would stop her now. She could sense the men behind her as she burst out of the office. She hunched into the bus which was about leaving which marvelled everyone on the bus on how such a pretty young girl could be so uncanny. But she didn’t care.
All that made sense was watching from the rear view mirror as the two men cursed themselves for not getting to her. Cursed themselves for being outrun by a woman. She just breathed out as a tear dropped from her eyes.
When Judi got to her flat, she found everywhere in disarray. You wouldn’t believe that she had just left here this morning. Judi opened her purse and looked at the android phone and ATM on her hand. It may be her only route of escape from Lagos and she needed to get out of here. She turned off her phone and placed it on the table. She knew that the people who were after her could track her phone. She remembered Makinde, his plans to study masters abroad and practice journalism without barriers. All that was gone now. Just because of the truth that they had pledged to always find. Right now, her dream life was the reason for this crap. What if she had just been a teacher or anything else but a journalist. Atleast, she wouldn’t know what she knew now and mostly, it wouldn’t be her responsibility to be the truth serum of the world and she would be safe.
She picked up her laptop and some needed stuffs and packed it into her small leather black bag as soon as possible. This was no more home anymore and she needed to keep away from here right now. She took everything and dashed out like the wind on the streets of Lagos.
It was already 2 pm. How time flies today but she knew it might be her last and she hadn’t even gone for confessional yet.
“Focus Judi. Just focus” she knew that someone might be watching her as she took that long walk on the crowded street of lasgidi.
“Excuse me, Ma” a thin lady touched her “Do you know how I can get to Agor” Judi was already frustrated but she just pointed on straight then she felt a sort of metal press against her skin. She could feel the heavy breathing behind her and the cologne that remided her of nothing but dangee. As she turned her head around, a huge man was standing behind her, brushing her skin while hot sweat ran through her face as she felt the felt the metallic black pistol pressing through her rib cage and sending shivers to her spine.
“Just shut up Judi” the thin woman told her then took her hands and they started walking towards the lonely alleys of Agor. Away from the eyes of people.
