Chapter 7:   Lucas Davis

Basically, I and Jennifer are childhood friend. As we lived in the same neighborhood and even went to the same high school. Jennifer was one of those intelligent students who always ranked in the first top five. And as I was her senior I used to call her a nerd and always teased her a lot by giving her different names. Even today I use to call her with different names. Most of the time we used to keep fighting each other without any specific reason. But we have our own way of friendship.

However, after high school, she showed interest in business management and chose to take admission in the top University for her further studies. As I was a student of sociology so I join a few social groups and started working for them after completing my post-graduation. Our ways get different but that does not affect our friendship.

During her college days, whenever she gets a chance she spends her time with my mother. She used to come to my house quite often. Both of them get along with each other very well. 

And I know that at a very young age she lost her mother as well as her father, in a car accident. In the first few months when uncle Benjamin brings her here she used to remain quiet and cry a lot because she missed her parents.

At first due to this reason she used to remain distant from the outsiders. But under the love and care of uncle Benjamin, she recovered from that trauma. Although I think, some parts are still unhealed. 

Therefore, right from childhood Jennifer always remain aloof to other people. But she is a straight-minded and independent person, with a kind heart.

She always keeps a small nonchalant smile on her rosy lips no matter what. Believe it or not but I think that was her signature smile which can melt down anyone's heart.

But sometimes I do think that, that there is a lot hidden behind that smile. 

But I don't have that much boldness to ask her directly. Even though we were childhood friends. But as long as we are friends I am all okay with all that. Because I respect her choices and privacy. And being her friend, she fortuitously, teaches me that being isolated is far better than being in the spotlight. 

Just like her, I also don't like to interfere in someone's personal life. Especially when that someone doesn't like other's intrusion.

Jennifer.....

She is like a bird...... a free bird, who cannot be caged by any means. This is why I think she lives in her own world, which she created.

Do not let others interfere in your life and also do not interfere in their lives too..!! And I like that thing about her. Actually... I like a lot more about her. Umm..... I don't know. I just... Ooh....!! It's quite confusing. 

I.. I like her honesty... I like he---

Argh...!!! It's confusing and even hard to articulate. 

' Or embarrassing to confess to your own self, huh??? ' My subconscious mind teases me out. 

' Stop your non-sense!! And leave this for now. She will be coming here soon. ' I commanded him to stop wandering. 

' Yeah. Of course like what you are doing for years. Leave.... whenever it comes to her. ' My inutile mind again taunted me.

A few minutes later. 

Ooh! 

Here she comes. Queen of her own kingdom. Haha...!! 

I get out of the car to open the door for the highness. 

Wow!! She is looking adorable in that beige sweatshirt of her. And even beautiful by letting her wavy hair fall freely. Just like her. Free. Without any impeding or hindrance. 

She walks towards me with a bright smile on her alluring face and wished me, " Hey big guy, Good Morning!! "

She approached me with a casual hug. I return her gesture and replied to her merrily, " Very good morning to you too Miss, so are you ready?? "

Breaking our hug she asked me while arching an eyebrow, " Yeah... well I was ready before nine and even waited for fifteen more minutes for someone who told me to get ready on time. So, of course, I am hell ready. " Sarcasm and anger were clear in her voice.  

Of course, I did give her the reason to lash out her anger on me. 

I scratch my head before explaining myself, " Hey I just went to fill the fuel in my car. That is why I was a bit late. So you can't blame me on that. " She just rolled her eyes and gives me a whatever look. 

Did I annoyed her again, I guess..!! 

She moved forward to the car and asked me in a confused and hesitated voice, " Lucas, I was thinking..... that we should go buy some gifts for the children first!! Actually, you texted me late. So I didn't go by myself. And no shop is open in the early morning so I couldn't make it by myself. Dude I know... it's Sunday but let's give it a try. Might be the main market in the city will be open..! "

Oh, so that's what bothering her !! At first, I sign in relief that at least I did not resent her.

' Ahh..!! '

So while opening the passenger door for her I answer by teasing her, " Oy Miss, what do you think of myself....huh?? That I'll be going to meet the children's without bringing any presents for them?? How cruel of you. "

" Do you really think that low of me?? " I completed my sentence with a little sadness on my face to complete my melodrama. 

Before she speaks, she sits and adjusts herself. While tucking her hair strand on the back of her ear, naturally. " No..... but I don't want to go there empty-handed. You know they are expecting me for so long and what I am doing..? Huh?? Can't I just buy some gifts for them...?? That would be so ridiculous of me, Lucas..!! "

I lean on the passenger door side and hear all her complaints and requests. " But I have already brought many gifts for them and it would be pointless if you also buy too many gifts. Besides if we go to the main market area at this time then I am damn sure that we'll get stuck in the city's traffic. And I bet we wouldn't be able to reach there on time. "

However, she is still looking confused and unconvinced so I continue my persuasion.

"Hey.... look. How about we make a deal, huh? Next time when we will go there, you will buy all the gifts for them. Moreover, I swear that I wouldn't bug you at that time. Okay..!!? "

Now there is a similar smile on her face which I was expecting. And with that, she agreed to my proposal. But she hits me on my arm out of blue.

Unleashing her annoyance..??

However, I asked in the defendant, " Now what was this for ?? What have I done now ?? "

Today right from the moment we have met, I am just annoying her. 

I think I have expertise in that field which I am not proud of. 

Not at all..!! 

She squinted her eyes. And then she tries to rebuke like my mother while suppressing her laugh, " You know, you look terribly ugly while making that sad face. You are pretending as if you are the most pitiful creatures on earth. So stop making that shitty face of yours. Especially in front of me. Mr. Melodrama..! "

I raised my hand in surrender right in front of her. " Okay okay. I'll try not to. But let's just keep going. "

I said before closing her door side. 

With that, I moved towards the driver's seat. I put my seat belt and in few minutes we were on touching the main road.

After some time, there was complete silence before I break it, " It's rare to see you free on Sunday. How come this happens that I get the prestige to see you on Sunday?? "

Squinting her eyes again she replied, " Are making a joke of me, Lucas?? " 

" No.....no. Not at all. How can a poor guy like me even dare to do that?? " I lower my head and placed one hand on heart and said in a pathetic tone. She laughs at my little act. 

" Hah... Lucas, you should try in the entertaining industry. I think they will definitely hire you. Especially, as a JESTER. " She lowered her index and middle finger twice, as an air quote while exaggerating the word - jester.

I was startled by her words. But I also give my part and join in. 

" Really..!!? If you say so then I'll give it a shot. What say..? "

I know she is just making fun of me as always. Taking advantage of my patience and innocence. Because she knows that I will not get mad at her. No matter what..!Besides I also like her teasing.

So I just boarded in her boat. 

" Yeah... Definitely. If you wish then I have a friend of mine who works in that field. " She informed mockingly. 

And like that, we began our journey to the orphanage with little teasing and fun.
